“Beautiful location but overpriced - needs to be weighed up”
Reviewed August 21, 2010

Gorgeous location and best place to be in on the island as you are far away enough from the more busy bungalow area but near enough to walk to the restaurant 'strip'.
Beach is fantastic and the sea views we had from our own bungalow was amazing. We'd wake up each morning and just sit on our terrace bit looking out to the sea, reading etc.
We paid 600,000 rupees a night for the room which was pretty basic. The room only got cleaned when we asked for it to be so, the breakfast which is included was really stingy -you only have a choice between toast and a pancake - and that can only be banana not chocolate. Toilet paper you have to keep asking for, and because we stayed there over a week, we were then given the low quality stuff!
The food is over priced too so go down to the restaurants on the main bit for bigger portions and fairer cost.
We had to ask for the mozzie net curtain to be cleaned as it was filthy and made sleeping difficult but the female owner was great and very friendly, lovely lady who did all we asked her to do. It would have been nice for some intiaitve to be taken though - you felt they try and cut down on a few corners. Our bathroom for eg wasn't great and needed cleaning each day from the sand etc but never did. The water was sea water so not fresh and there is no hot water so for all that, it's very over priced. But then the location is great and the beaches fine so you need to weigh it up.
We are happy we stayed there despite all these things as we wanted peace and quiet but compared to where we stayed in Gili Trewengan we got immaculate room with fresh water, fab breakfast and all for 450,000.
All depends on what you're looking for and what's important to you.

Just returned home from Gili Meno. The island is perfect to get away from crows and enjoy the fact that time stands still. We stayed in Biru Meno three nights, and we absolutely did not like it! Three nights was more than enough... Go somewhere else to enjoy your stay on this island.

In the three days we stayed in Biru Meno we found numerous bugs (and no action on this from both the owner - who we never saw again after we payed in advance - or his lazy Austrian girlfiend) in our dirty bathroom. The bed was surrounded by a dirty mosquito net and had a standing fan that hardly reached the bed. We had to improvise and put the fan on a little table for us to even enjoy it a bit. The windows could not be opened completely and therefore no welcome evening sea breeze for us. There was no cleaning and we had to ask for extra toilet paper, clean towels and clean sheets. In addition, the snorkling gear Biru Meno rents is rubbish. The breakfast is very limited and without English speaking staff it was very hard to explain that banana pancakes really need to be in a pan for longer than 1 minute. Every bit of extra effort by the Austrian girlfriend of the owner seemed too much.

As you can read, we did not like our stay in Biru Meno, but we loved Gili Meno. Please look for another place to stay, and do not believe the review you read in the Lonely Planet!

I traveled enought in my life, especially in South East Asia, Africa and South America.
I slept in several budget accomodations but nothing in comparison with Biru Meno.
Gili Meno is a Lovelly quite Island and you can find there a quite place to stay.
Biru meno is a kind of Hell.
We reserved in advance for 50 $, as soon as arrived in the island price increased to 80$ but no way to find another accomodation considering the hight season. Room absolutelly dirty, old fornitures and holes everywhere make Cockroach ables to come inside from everiwhere. Discusting situation before sleeping with such insect all around us. After one night, we escaped to another island and the Austrian Manger (very arrogant and rude woman) absolutelly didn't heard our complains. Is a pitty, could be a good place, but at the moment, to avoid at 100%.

I went to gili meno back in October of 2009 and decided to stay at this little spot since it seemed like one of the few places with a vacancy. For $35 a night, i was expecting more than a thatched hut and a standing fan(there was a mozzie net though). when i asked for toilet paper and soap since the bathroom didn't have any, the Austrian/German woman who seems to run the place acted annoyed, like i was asking for too much. uh, is that really too much to ask for $35/night??? i also ordered some vegetable soup there and it came out with dirt floating on the top of the broth. eat somewhere else if you have to stay here.
the breakfast was small, adequate for a breakfast appetizer. I had to just head out for an early lunch somewhere else. The Indonesian owner seems quite nice, but the woman with the chip on her shoulder tainted the friendly vibe of the place.
on the plus side, gili meno is such a special little place. i loved the island. biru meno is on the beach, but the beach in front isn't ideal for swimming or snorkeling. but it's quiet and relaxing there and you can truly unwind.
it seemed like biru meno was in the process of building some newer bungalows that seemed quite nice: larger and better quality huts. perhaps those bungalows would have been worth the $35.

Well one doesnt expect too much on Gili Meno and that is a lot of the islands attraction. But this place is way over-priced for what you get compared to others. We turned up to a basic room, a fan (not a ceiling fan..but a pedestal fan), and a door that did not lock, Well it did lock then if wouldnt open. They guy had to smother it in oil that stunk the place out. With nowhere to lock up valuables we moved quickly on and 10mins up the road found a place with ceiling fan, closer to the beach huts and marina, nice husband and wife operation for Rp150,000 less. (Royal Reef Resort). Now as you would know, a saving of Rp150,0000 can get you 5 large bintangs !!.

Our experience with Biru meno:
the most expensive plate on the island.
They promise a full breakfast.. in the end its: or 1 egg or 1 pancake and one little can of tea or coffee.. after complaining about that, the owners girlfriend explained: oh come one, 1 pancake shoud really be enough.
All the guests ran away to have their breakfast at other restaurants during their stay.
a few nights it rained.. all our beds were flooded.. the owners acted as if it is the first time that this happenes and didnt really offer help.
The owner himself is very nice.. but he's blended by this cheap lady from Vienna/Austria

We just returned from gili meno,a wonderful island in indonesia, and we stayed in a beautiful and spiritful place called BIRU MENO.The bungalows are so beautiful designed and big.We got the feeling to say -its our own bungalow-.They are directly on the beach with a wonderful seaview.
We enjoyed our holidays with snorkeling,surfing,reading,relaxing...
The food in Biru Meno was also so nice, indonesian and italian food, hmmm.
All in all it is a good place to feel deeper the life as its pureness, far away from hectic and quick life in cities.
With lot energy we are now back, and we hope we can soon visit Biru Meno again.....
