Stayed here for the first time this year. Having read previous reviews I was unsure what to expect. Our room for 5 people was on the upper floor of the main block and the view of the pool and sea was very good. The double bed could do with attaching to the headboard, as it slided forward if you sit up in bed. The balcony size is generous. Cleaning is daily and to a good standard. The breakfast, yes it is basic, but it is adequate. The pool was clean when we were there. But I can confirm the pool toilets were a bit grubby. Generally the place is very well maintained though and I think Napoleon, Makis and the 2 ladies do a great job. Bar is basic but satisfactory and you can get snacks there which are not particularly advertised. There was a mag. 4.5 earthquake when we were there which made it feel like the building was made of rubber! But it's quite substantial.

We finally arrived Late on the Sunday night of 25th August, after being delayed in Newcastle for 4 Hours. Napoloeon, The Manager was still waiting for us and was extremely helpful and Chatty. We talked about our Children while he showed us to Our Rooms. We stayed in one of the Studio`s, The room was very clean and spacious. The bathroom was a big size, Two sofa`s on either side of large living area. which also had two pull out beds underneath. The Rooms were cleaned every day and the Cleaners were friendly. The pool area was well maintained and Makis the barman was always around to talk to. The location of the Hotel was Brilliant. 5 Minutes walk from the beach and say 10 Minutes from the main street. There ar numerous Restaurants situated within at least a 10 minute walk. Highly recommend Socrates, Pikiona, Makis Grill, Pas Palis. For Drinks I would recommend Akri, Veto`s Bar, Metaxa, Sally`s Bar and The Captains Bar.

We were 2 adults and 2 kids (13 and 10) and comfortably fitted into one standard bedroom. Clothes storage was just the one wardrobe....not really enough. Room was large enough that we could live out of our cases without getting in each others way.

We were ground floor (almost sunk below ground level) with a large patio. No view.....but by the end we liked the privacy and large space it gave us to drop all the beach stuff each night. Also had an outside tap that came in useful.

We were one of the few that hadn't been to the Big Village Hotel under previous management. So while others were disappointed......it seemed ok to us. New management aren't exceptional.......but exactly what we expected for Greece. No worse than anywhere else i've stayed across Kefalonia, Corfu, Crete and Thassos.

Room cleaning wasn't every day.....but enough. Breakfast was poor....but we expected it.

My main issue was the location. Slightly up the hill, just 10 minutes walk from the beach - but having seen some other hotels directly on the beach, we wondered why we hadn't booked one of them. By the last day i'd decided i preferred being on the hill, closer to the main strip of bars and restaurants. Made us feel like we'd covered a little more ground.....made it feel like we'd come home after an evening on the beach. if we'd been at the beachfront Tara Hotel (which looked nice) - not convinced we'd have moved much more than 50 metres over the 10 days.

The pool bar was well run......probably the highlight of the hotel. Makis the pool bar manager was the most enthusiastic member of staff at the Big Village Hotel. The pool was ok......did seem, get a touch cloudy, but none of us became ill after swimming in it.

Our kids preferred another nicer pool by the each.....you could get access if you bought drinks there. Though i suspect the waitresses preferred Greek custom to ours - we dragged out our 10 Euros worth of drinks. Be prepared to spend a little more money if you want a smile as well as the pool.

Skala as a resort grew on us too. I couldn't see what made people come back year after year. I think its that it has a little of everything.

Room Tip: Bottom floor views not so good......but the large terrace was great compensation.

Have visited here many times over the years. The hotel remains clean and tidy but the pool area and bar have gone downhill this year. By the end of our stay the pool was cloudy and our feet filthy from walking on the patio that doesn't seem to get cleaned from one day to the next. The plants round the pool are all dying as they don't get watered and the outside toilets could do with a good powerhosing and disinfecting. Shame as its such a lovely location and the staff are very friendly and helpful, if just a little bit inept. Come on, clean up the pool and get back to your old standards.

My previous experiences of Greece are of family-run small hotels in Skiathos, Halkidiki and in 2010 the Makis Hotel in Skala. In each case you knew exactly what you were going to get - clean rooms with basic decor, a very basic breakfast and lovely people running the hotel. Having read the reviews of the Big Village I was expecting another family affair, but things have changed over the last year. This is what I could make of it !

The owner (who also runs the Galaxy supermarket up the hill in town) and his wife are now divorced. She ran the Big Village with her sons and has now gone. The reception is being manned by a great bloke named Napoleon who also has another hotel in town. The bar and pool are looked after by Mikey who lives around the corner but at a conservative estimate works a 15 hour day. The breakfast and cleaning are done by two ladies. That's it, there is no-one else.

These 4 people are doing a great job of keeping the place going - we had 3 x towel and bedding changes in the 2 weeks we were there and the pool area and room were very clean with the bonus of having a glass shower cubicle. We had one of the 4 "suites" with 2 single beds in the main room, a fridge, kettle, TV and loads of furniture and a galleried upper floor with a double bed and loads more storage space. I can't fault it. I think you'd struggle to self-cater here as there are no plates, cutlery or cooking facilities but it didn't bother us. My one minor criticism would be that Mikey is trying manfully to get his bar up to scratch but isn't quite there yet, though there are plenty of other places nearby for snacks and cocktails. The Akri bar around 100m away is worth a visit just to hear Jenny the lovely hostess speaking Welsh !

I'll also add that in contradiction to a previous review we loved the Pikiona Bar. It's on the beach next door to the Makis and has had 2.2 million euros spent on it to create a restaurant / bar / pool used by locals and tourists alike (you'll see familiar faces like the "Captain" with his kids there) The music isn't as intrusive as it was in 2010 when it was mainly a teen hangout, so when you can't see the water at the Big Village for inflatables and water pistols it may be worth a look.

Room Tip: The 4 suites have 2 aircon units in each room so will cost you 8E per night - well worth it though.

Enjoyed our recent visit very much. But it has gone downhill slightly since the previous management moved on since last summer. Cleanliness is definitely an issue especially the outside pool area toilets. But the same can be said as in previous reviews, Mikey at the pool bar is a star! Nothing is too much trouble and he really does his best to be welcoming and to make your visit as pleasant as possible!
