Visited in mid-September and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Rooms were a good size and kept really clean by the on site cleaners. Small swimming pool which we did not use as beach just across the road which was sand, shingle and pebbles with plenty of sun beds at 5 euros for two beds and a brolly. We used to adjourn to the hotel bar late afternoon after a hard day at the beach. Bar area was good and prices ok and the staff were very friendly. Plenty of good restaurants within a 5-10 min walk. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Try for a top floor for the better views.

Returned to The Makis after several years at the Anassa. Hotel itself is a good base, the rooms are big as is the pool area.

Sadly as we were there as the season was drawing to a close certain amenities were being packed away. Two days before we left, the sun loungers and parasols vanished from the beach. Followed by some furniture around the pool. Stranger still, and also something of a safety worry, all the fire extinguishers seemed to vanish from near the rooms by the last day!

I guess if you go well before the end of the season the hotel will serve its purpose fine. It just left me with a sour taste, like we weren't guests so much as we were getting in the way of them clearing up.

Given that my wife is recovering from a serious illness I wanted a hotel with a central location to the beach and resort centre , the Makis Hotel did just that. In general the hotel is good and found the staff to be friendly without being intrusive. We where in room 212 on 3rd floor of the second block from the sea and found the room to be of ample size , with decent balcony with sea view and quite large bathroom for 2/3 star hotel . The only criticism I would have is that the television screen was broken and although reported on the first day was not replaced over the following 2 weeks despite being told would be done the following morning.
The hotel makes a good centre for those who want the benefit of being in a resort but intend to do their own thing. It would seem the those who have criticised the hotel want something more exclusive to their own individual taste as appears to be "not child friendly enough" or "not tranquil enough for older people who want a pool side holiday". Therefore people should judge this as mid priced hotel servicing different family needs.
In general the island does not seem to cater for families with young children and for those who want something more exclusive then really need to accept you will likely have to pay a premium and go elsewhere.
Cephalonia is a lovely island that is still developing it's tourist identity and the hotel reflects that mix. The big plus point is that in general food is good most places you go and good value for money. I would suggest a place with enough of interest to go for at least one annual holiday.

Room Tip: Choose a second floor room if you want good sea view but ground floor if you have mobility issues a...

We go to Greece every year outside of the school holidays because we like peaceful quiet holidays when the kids are mostly at school. Were were at the Makis from 8 September for 11 nights and liked the place but the owners kids were allowed to do anything they wanted, running around screaming all day, the little lad kept running into guests (on purpose I may add) on his bike, running around the bar in the evening. Not for us. We wont go back.
We rarely leave poor feedback for a holiday but on this occasion we think people need to know that Makis is a lovely place but it is not peaceful.
Any questions happy to help.

We thought we would try Corfu last May, just for a week to see if we liked it. Another Small & Friendly hotel in a location very similar to the Makis. The whole family were just so hands on and couldn’t do enough for you, greeting everyone off the coach and waving us off at the end of our stay. Amazing.

Just back from our third and last stay at the Makis. Compared to the Small & Friendly hotel we used to go to in Menorca, the Makis was a great find. The location, so many restaurants to eat at and the friendliness of the Greeks in comparison to the Spaniards all made this place superb.

However, so sorry Makis, times up. Now we have sampled another Greek island, and there are so many more to visit in the future, there is no comparison. There is better out there. We have done the children bit Dennis, and don’t want to listen your children crying and screaming every afternoon just when we get settled on the balcony. We don’t pay all that hard earned cash to have a bathroom covered in mould when we don’t at home. Where were you when your income got off the coach and departed two weeks later? Three or four guest appearances in fourteen days isn’t enough. You can’t leave it all to your hard working staff.

So, thanks for the memories. The sun has finally set over Skala.

Room Tip: Front two blocks nearest the sea are probably best.

We have just returned from a fabulous two weeks in Kefalonia, and staying at the Makis made all the difference. We were so impressed with the hotel - the staff are so friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. There was always plenty of room around the pool - no scrabbling for sunbeds! The beach was just across the road and provided a lovely setting. There is no doubt we will be booking again!
