Another enjoyable holiday the Makis. Thanks to Denis and his friendly team who do theor upmost to keep everyone happy. A bit quiet this year, particularly the bar in the evenings, possibly due to the club-style music.which didn't quite fit the scene. Basic but spotlessly clean rooms. Breakfast a bit unadventurous but nice to see fresh fruit added in the last few days. Skala quiet also but a nice resort with good, cheap and varied restaurants. Elsewhere Kefaloni looked to be suffering from a huge amount of new graffiti which really spoils tthe towns and stunning viewpoints. The police need to get hold of this before it deters tourists. Overall though we had a really good time.

This is the second time we have stayed at the Makis and both visits have been brilliant. Denis and his staff keep a very clean very friendly hotel and we will be returning next year. Some previous reviews have been less than favourable and I would suggest that these people need to improve their research prior to going anywhere in future. For myself and my wife we can't speak high enough of the hotel, resort and the people of Kefalonia.

had a fab holiday at the makis very friendly hotel and staff are second to none from the tai cleaners to the bar staff. room was on the top floor a bit of a climb especially after a few drinks but they were clean and we even had a line to dry u towels on even pegs were supplied.the barbaque was not used and it would have been nice to have a barbaque night .perfect spot pas palace hotel was a really lovely place to eat good food reasonably priced.drinks were expensive in most of the bars and hotels compared to the rest of europe.would go back and i would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: most were the same no problems with the room.

We have just returned from a two week stay at the Makis Hotel and had a really relaxing holiday. Yes, it may be more basic accommodation compared to some other holiday destinations, but it was good for Greece and we found it had everything we needed for our stay. The mini fridge, air conditioning and safety deposit box in the room were all free. Our room was spacious enough for the three of us with plenty of sockets. The bathroom was small but had a large shower cubicle. The room was cleaned every day and the towels changed every few days. We always found the staff very friendly and approachable. Our 9 year old son particularly loved squirting water at Dennis, the owner, who was always game for some fun!
The beach is just across the road and gets more stony the closer you get to the sea, wear shoes and slip them off at the edge. The sea was lovely and clear and great for snorkelling, however, it does get deep after a few paces. There is a short steep hill to encounter before reaching the town which is only a few minutes walk. We tried most of the restaurants and can honestly say we never had a bad meal. Our favourites were The Pines, Mi Abeli, The Flamingo & Sirocco. Most had child menus which even suited our fussy son! There were wasps which were annoying at the restaurants, but if you ate after about 8pm they were few and far between. I bought some mosquito spray with deet and only had one bite, they usually eat me alive, so I would recommend this.
We hired a car from Greekstones who were excellent. The roads are quite winding and a bit hairy at times up to Fiskardo, but it was an experience. We particularly enjoyed the Melissani Lake and Gerasimos Monastery. We also took a day trip to Ithaca with Captain Vangelis which we all thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend.
If you want a chilled, relaxing holiday with plenty of restaurants this is the place to go. If you want nightclubs and loud music this is not for you. We would definately return to the Makis.

Room Tip: We had room 105 which was on 1st floor at front of hotel with view of beach

We've been to Kekfalonia once before, and picked Skala as it offered plenty of hotels and restaurants and good beach. It was an hour or so transfer from the airport. Makis Hotel is right on the front, not to be confused with Makis Apartments. It's a b&b rather than an hotel. Our room was ground floor; clean basic and functional. We had an outside sitting area, which was adequate. We tried to swap to a first floor and to get a sea view, but nothing available (in fact there was someone we later discovered who wanted to swap, but the hotel staff didn't make the connection). The public areas were smart and clean. Enjoyed breakfast which was ample, with a new "specialty" every day be it an omelette or boiled eggs, plenty to eat and I thought of a good variety for continental. The reception staff were mostly not particularly helpful. Book swap for avid readers.

We tried the pool area which was fine, large pool but cold, plenty of sun beds. We preferred the beach a walk away to the right. If you walk for about 10 minutes, you are no longer on the road, it's peaceful and there are a small number of tavernas set in pretty gardens where you get a superb view and a really good lunch or coffee.

We tried out the pools along the front and particularly liked the Annassa, super warm pool (not big), very friendly staff and simple substantial food (pub type) and we had a beautiful home made pizza. Enjoyed the evening entertainment too.

We used Panem tours, had an execllent island highlights tour - if you only do one try that. Really liked Assos where we would like to stay in the future.

Loads of choice of eating places in Skala. We went up the main street and found a real Greek, no frills taverna on a street on the left where they did fabulous fresh grilled fish and price reasonable. If you look around you can find unpretentious places.

If you don't want to travel, there is everything you need for a lazy beach holiday in Skala.

Had a fabulous week at this hotel. Don't let the lack of stars put you off. it's only rated a two star but it's immaculately clean & very efficiently run. The rooms are basic, there is no television if that's what you want from a sunshine holiday(!), but there is a safe, fridge & excellent air con included in the price which is quite unusual in Greece. The draw back of the hotel is the hard beds & uncomfortable pillows but you are really lucky to get a comfortable bed anywhere in Greece. The cleanliness of the place is second to none & the small tight knit staff are marvellous, super efficient, knowledgable about excursions etc & generally very friendly & helpful. The swimming pool is great too! Breakfast is pretty basic but acceptable. there is no fresh fruit provided so if that's what you're after you'll be disappointed. The hotel serves a lunch menu of salads & snacks & Angelo's cocktails are a huge hit in the bar in the evenings. You'll need to explore beyond the boundries of the hotel for an evening meal but everything is on your doorstep. The Makis is literally across a small road from a super beach (5 euros per day for 2 beds & an umbrella) and the Ionian sea is to die for. Perfect to cool off as the weather is really very hot. At this hotel you are pretty much in the thick of everything that Skala has to offer, plenty of tavernas, hotels & shops. The vibe is relaxed and quiet, but not dead! Mosquitos are rife so be sure to take plenty of gear to rule bites out! There it is, the recipe for a wonderful week in the Kefalonian sunshine!

Room Tip: If you want a twin be sure to ask The Makis direct.
