“Excellent Holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2010

If you like a totally relaxing holiday then Villa Costa is for you. We had an excellent stay, the hotel is spotlessly clean, and set within a lovely garden. The food is excellent with a good choice for breakfast and delicious evening meals. Mario and his team provide a very high standard of service in beautiful surroundings.
We stayed in Nausicaa which was very private, comfortable and equipped to a high standard.
We hired a car and explored the island which was fantastic. We drove through lovely villages, saw beautifully quiet beaches and encountered very little traffic on the roads, except for goats and cows.
Due to the small number of rooms you get to know the other guests therefore enjoying a chat over a drink or dinner with them.
We intend to return next year to recharge our batteries.

I enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing week at Villa Costa last month as part of a larger family celebration with family & friends. My parents have visited this hotel twice before and therefore I knew the standards must be high! I was not disappointed - the hotel is beautiful, both outside and in the rooms. The grounds are immaculately maintained and are very peaceful to spend a day in by the pool.

The rooms are always of a high standard. I stayed (with my three friends) in the largest of the 7 rooms, the Artemis, which is comprised of 2 bedrooms, living / dining room, kitchen area and bathroom. It was a lovely room and we particularly enjoyed sitting on the balcony with a cocktail before dinner! These are made by the very friendly Theo who was always ready to recommend something new or make something not on the cocktail menu for you.

The food and drink at Villa Costa is first class and is just as good as many top London restaurants, something the chef should be very proud of. Mario, the hotel owner discussed the menu with us when we arrived and we were able to let him know if there was anything we could and couldn't eat. Despite there being a good number of restaurants in Scala, we chose to eat at the hotel every night, as the standard of the food could not be beaten. Mario is also an expert on wine, which meant we were able to sample some of the finest wine I have ever drank. A BBQ night and a wine and cheese tasting evening were also a perfect way to get to know the other guests at the hotel (my family's party were in 4 of the 7 rooms), which was lovely.

The hotel is a perfect location for the beach, which is literally across the road and was very pleasant to relax on, especially knowing you were so close to your hotel!

There isn't lots to do in Scala itself, but there are boat trips to nearby places and we chose to hire a boat for four which allowed us to explore the coast with its private beaches and coves and meet some dolphins along the way!

Mario & his mother, as well as all the staff clearly take pride in the special experience you get at Villa Costa and I know I'll be making a return trip, with or without my family! I would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a relaxing, peaceful holiday in a beautiful setting. 5 stars from me!

Villa Costa, Scala, Kephalonia

This is definitely no Greek Taverna, but an idyllic Haven for rest and romance!

This is a very classy and professionally run place and we certainly intend to return. There are only 7 rooms, and after a wine tasting event and an evening BBQ laid on by the hotel, guests are generally on first name terms and, while maintaining privacy it is a very friendly and relaxed environment.

Although we booked the last room available, it was laid out to a very high standard and very comfortable. The cleanliness of the rooms and venue was excellent and importantly, the fridge would hold plenty of tonic and ice for the evening drinks on our balcony!! (Well equipped convenience store 5 minutes walk away).
The grounds are the most perfectly groomed I have seen, indeed so lovely that most of the residents spent the day sunning within the grounds around the pool or on their balconies, despite the beach being so near … everything was perfect! I’m not the type to normally photograph flowers in close up but here I took several.

Of course there was also the very stylish and obligingly staffed bar/terrace just a short walk away from the pool, with a half price cocktail ‘hour’ considerately lasting from 4 to 8pm. These cocktails became much appreciated by us during our stay, being good value, delicious and where necessary ingredients like mint would even be picked to order from the garden for your drink – very stylish. And of course they just ‘press’ the mint leaves in the pestle and mortar – not crush them … so that the flavour can be released just right!!!

Only 30 metres from the grounds is a beautiful sea shore, with loungers, sun umbrellas and a remarkably warm sea – even in September. Just along the coast is a beach where loggerhead turtles lay their eggs and hatch. It seems we are discouraged from leaving our sandcastles in place in case the little hatchlings bump into them as they head to the water – quaint or what?
A 10 minute walk along this shoreline will bring you to the small town of Scala itself, which is surprisingly well equipped with dozens of tavernas and restaurants of different styles and nationalities. We very much enjoyed sampling the local Greek food, and the local wine was extremely palatable. Though we explored the town, by the end of the week we noted that the food and drink served at Villa Costa compared very well with the other restaurants for value and excellent quality. Scala is not a cheap place mind you, but then … it’s not London prices either!

A frequent discussion amongst guests was the bewildering awareness that all this luxurious comfort and facilities was for just 15 guests, instead of perhaps 50-80 in a more typical hotel – this really felt special and indulgent. We are used to Cruise holidays, and this compared very favourably.
Criticisms? If you want an active holiday, then apart from hiring a speed boat for 3 hours to tour the spectacular coastline, and some boat trips there was little to do in Scala except eat and drink. Diving and Horse riding centres are about an hour away but although we had hired a car, the call to rest, feel luxuriously spoiled and improve our sun tan proved irresistible!

As a unique visionary project of the owner Mario who is of Greek ancestry and Canadian trained standards, this hotel is so special and luxurious that it is easy to realise why so many people come back to this place and, as in our case, enthuse to their friends.
This place is worth checking out if you’re after luxurious rest or a special romantic venue.

We have just returned froma week's holiday at the Villa Costa.

The flight over from Manchester was great, and the service at the airport was excellent. The taxi driver was certainly on a mission, but he got us the accomodation in super quick time!

Mario was there to greet us at the gates, and he showed us to the room, which was spacious and very clean. We were in Hermione and we had a huge terrace which walked straight out into the gardens.

After a quick unpack we decided to have a drink at the bar, the usual first 2 cold large beers, but nearly fell over when we found out they were 4 euros each! Needless to say they were the last drinks we bought from the bar. Thr prices were hiked up to say the least, and besides, there was never any other guests there to talk to. Everyone seemed to keep themselves to themselves.

Breakfast was an experience....It was served on the terrace, and there was a choice of 1 cold and 1 hot dish from the menu, which stayed the same the whole time we were there. If you dont like eggs then you are pretty much only limited to pancakes for the hot dishes, as it was either boiled, scrambled, fried or omlette for choice. The lady who served the breakfast was pretty slow with service, couldnt really speak english and got our order wrong a couple of times. If you order egg on toast, the toast is a tiny triangle of bread, sometimes toasted sometimes not, and most mornings the hot meals were cold. The chef downstairs would ring the bell and the waitress would not rush to get the meals. So, because the breakfasts were poor we decided not to eat evening meals there, which was disappointing as the other reviews were so good. The prices of the meals for lunch and dinner were really expensive, the cheapest evening main course was 16 euros, we could get 2 meals for that in resort. Besides, the meals werent even Greek!

The music that was playing from the bar/terrace really got on our nerves. It was the boutique type music you get in wine bars and it was played from breakfast until bedtime and drove us nuts!

We found Mario not a great host really. He hardly spoke to us at all, always sat in his corner at the bar watching what everyone was doing. Quite intimidating really, didnt like it at all and nothing like the other Greek hosts I have met over the years.

We spent the first day next to the pool, but the endless music and the lack of any atmosphere made sure we were down the beach from then on. We did the boat trip to Ithaca which was a bit scary coming back - the wind had picked up and crossing was rough to say the least! We then hired a moped for a couple of days and went out and about.

The rooms were cleaned daily, absolutely spotless.

Skala itself was great, not really changed much over the years, we have been to the resort 3 times now, the first visit 20 years ago. The tavernas were more than adequate and all sold traditional greek food and wines, which is why we go to Greece!

Would we go back to Villa Costa? No. Sorry, but not Greek enough for me. Sat on the terrace with a drink and we could have been anywhere in the world.

When we left, Mario didnt see us off or anything, just said goodbye from his chair. Perhaps it was because we didnt buy anything from him?

At the airport the Sovereign rep was fantastic, she found us and stayed with us the whole time before and during check in, keeping us posted about the flight arrival and check in opening times. They get you to airport early before the coaches get there so you get checked in nice and early. We then went up to the taverna just outside the airport for a drink and a snack, which was great, but keep an eye on the time - we saw 2 groups of people that nearly missed the flight because they got carried away up there!

Will definately travel with Sovereign again - pennies permitting!

I would just like to say that i have had the most perfect holiday at Villa Costa,The owner Mario,Theo the cocktail barman and Sophia marios mother are the perfect hostes. The chef is equally as good as any first class restaurant that i have ever used. The rooms/grounds are spottlesley clean and the attention to detail at Villa costa is second to none.I will without doubt be staying at Villa Costa again in the not too distant future. Thanks to all the staff for making our stay perfect!!.

After a lot of research we decided on villa costa for a 2 week break. We too were greeted by Mario and shown to our room .We found it a little dark and not to the usual 5star standard,.being aware it was greece we relaxed a bit and settled in.We had a problem with the shower and on the second day we were assured it had been repaired and just to be gentle with it as it was delicate! if you are looking for privacy the villa costa is not the ideal place.the wasps at breakfast were very offputting, mowing the lawn at cocktail hour was quite annoying, the presence of mario and sophia quite intimidating at times .the food and wine was enjoyable but not in my opinion the best on the island for the prices charged. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and would advise hiring a car and exploring the island.

We came here for our honeymoon, and could not have picked a more perfect setting! The grounds of the villa are exceptionally clean and well kept, it is evident that Mario and his team take great pride in keeping everything looking fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble, everyone is very helpful. The atmosphere is intimate - Villa Costa is very sociable and friendly without being 'in your face'. Our Sovereign concierge Caroline was great, she was also very friendly and helpful. Together they organised two fantastic events - a cheese and wine night with traditional greek dishes, and a wine tasting bbq night. This gave us chance to meet some of the other guests and get to know everyone (staff included) a little better.
The food here is fabulous! Their chef Babbas (hope I've spelt it right!) uses the finest ingredients to produce excellent meals that have very high standards of presentation, you will go very far to find a better meal on Kefalonia. Finally we would like to praise the maitre d' Theo for his consistent professional, helpful and friendly approach.
