“Excellent location next to a superb beach”
Reviewed June 6, 2009

We stayed at the Paspalis for a week from 26 May as a Thomson bed and breakfast package. The hotel is located opposite one of the best beaches on Kefalonia, you have to cross a road but it is not a busy one. The rooms in the hotel are very clean and all come with a balcony or ground floor terrace. The pool is a good size with plenty of beds and parasols plus a bar. The only slight niggle was that the breakfast was basic continental. Cereal, toast, jam, cake, ham and cheese and every day the same. If you wanted a cooked breakfast or fruit or yoghurt it could be purchased as an extra. All the staff wer very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is a 10 minute walk to the centre of town with all the shops, bars and restaraunts. We did not eat in the hotel so cannot comment on the food, we preferred to explore the local restaurants, we can reccomend teh Aquarius and Symphony. Local public transport is not good, one bus a day, so a car is essential for exploring the island.

Had 2 weeks at Paspalis. Great place. Right on the sea front - 5 steps and you are on the beach, with lounges at 5 euros for the 2 and umbrella. Taverna is part of complex and does excellent food - good selection and good price. Complex extremely clean and tidy. Super pool and bar. Very friendly staff and made to feel at home. Just a few minutes walk into Scala high street where there are a number of restaurants and a couple of supermarkets, plus a few gift shops. All very casual and no-one trying to hassle you.
Paspalis rooms are good with TV and fridge and good shower. Need to bring or buy shoes to wear into sea as shingle until you get further out. Steeps away very quickly but clear and clean. Not the sort of beach for young ones as too deep too quickly. Lots of boat trips from right next door to hotel. Everyone from around came to eat at Taverna. Internet free to hotel guests in reception.
Met loads of people who have been here for 6, 10, 14 and 15 years - always returning which is an excellent sign.
Well done to all at Paspalis - we and all our friends will be back.
Thanks.

Fourth time in Skala second visit to the Paspalis. Basic clean bedrooms. WC and shower room good size but fittings need modernised - morning wrestle with the serpent in the shower room! . The maid visited daily, swept the floors cleaned the wc room but, unusually, did not make the beds. AC ( 5 euros a night) essential for comfort and to keep the mossies etc at bay. Room safe 15 euros a week. Fridge included in room cost.
The standard breakfast was very basic and uninteresting but there was a good value supplementary menu providing freshly cooked bacon and eggs etc. The lunch and evening restaurant was excellent with a good choice of Greek and international fare. A good option is to select three Greek appetisers with a bottle of beer giving a good value lunch for about 15 euros for 2 people.
Bar/ taverna staff were generally friendly and efficient. The manager was helpful if rather diffident, giving one the feeling of being a passing number rather than a guest.
The hotel has a good location opposite the sand and shingle beach with an easy walk into the town centre. Skala municipality should do something to clear some of the large stones under the water edge to provide a few 'paddleways' so that swimmers can get into the sea without foot injury or undignified manoeuvres. Lots of good tavernas in Skala we liked Socrates, Pines, Paspalis - the place next to the Paspalis (Tara ?) was good for lunch.

Stayed at the Papalis for a week at the end of August.

Best thing about the hotel is its location - right across the road from the beach and a short stroll to the resort centre of Skala. Hence, the restaurant has a beautiful view overlooking the sea and the pool area is ideal.

Rooms are adequate for the amount of time spent in there but very hot and air conditioning is essential. What we were not told on booking the accommodation though was that you have to pay for it!!! 30euros a week - bit cheeky in my view, especially as when turned on it smelt of wet dog! Cleaning was adequate and bathroom needed updating, think towels should be changed more than once a week. Great view from the balcony though.

Breakfast was a bit poor but you could pay for extras. Orange cordial not juice, awful tea and coffee, basics of bread, cheese, ham, jams etc. Had lunch there each day though which was always nice - large portions, sufficient for one between two in the heat!

Skala is a lovely resort although the beach is not great for kids as its very pebbly. If you visit, you must eat at 'Pikiona' - very cool contemporary restaurant but still offering traditional greek food with a modern twist and fabulous decor and setting. Also, 'Scirocco' on the main street was really nice with fabulous service.

We had a fantastic 2 weeks at the Paspalis. We thought the rooms were perfectly adequate for what you wanted and if you keep the doors to the shower open when your not using it (nice to have them in the first place) it makes the bathroom look twice as big!! Our room was spotless, cleaned daily, sheets changed twice a week. We found Nikos the owner very friendly he was there when we arrived at 1.30am to meet us and when we had a problem with the air-conditioning at 2.30 in the morning after a quick call he was there in 5 minutes to sort the problem out. All the staff were very polite and helpful especially Ria and Panos. They work very hard and nothing is too much trouble. Make sure you try one of Ria's 'Special Cocktails' The restaurant there is very good, we ate there every other night, very good portions so we shared a starter most times. The location is fantastic, right opposite the beach and just a 10 minute stroll to the town. I wouldn't say the beach is for children, lots of shingle/pebbles and the sea gets deep very quickly but fantastically clear. You can book a boat trip next door to the hotel with Captain Vangellis we went to Symi - my first ever boat trip! Loved every minute, didn't feel sick and even plucked up courage to jump off the top of the boat. Thankfully just made it back before Kosmar and XL Airlines whent bust - no problem though because Thomsons go to the Paspalis as well so will have to book with them for next year!

The Paspalis Hotel was a great B&B right by the beach in such a beautiful and peaceful part of Kefalonia. The transfer from the airport took about one hour and fifteen minutes, but once we arrived, we didn't care how long we had been travelling for...we had chosen the right place to relax.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Nikos, the hotel owner, he was very friendly and spoke very good English. He showed us to our room and told us that if we needed anything, we were to go to reception. Luckily, we were situated on the top floor in room 40, which had a really nice view of the sea and the apartments next door (Anassa). The room was admittedley quite small, but upon reflection, it was all we needed. It has one large room which contains the bed, a dresser, a wardrobe, some bed-side tables, a fridge, and a TV (with some satellite TV channels where you can watch Baywatch, Desperate Housewives, BBC, CNN, and some greek soap operas. There is also a small bathroom, but it felt quite new and is tiled all around. As we went in late August, the heat was extremely severe so air conditioning for us was a must, and this costs just €30 per week.

We ate at Paspalis for lunch and for our main meal and it was one of the best places we ate at. The service is good and we soon picked up on the fact that "Yammas" means "Cheers" in greek! The atmosphere at the restaurant is really relaxing and friendly and they even catered for somebodys birthday! The food is served quickly and is very reasonably priced - the cheapest place we found....but be warned, you get pretty big portions so don't have a huge starter as you probably won't have room for your main course!

Just afew minor personal issues. This may not bother some people, but it did niggle at me abit and this is why I have not given this hotel 5 stars. First point is the cleaning times. You are instructed to make sure you have vacated your room by 10am so the cleaners can do their rounds...however, because we were located in one of the last rooms at the hotel (we were 40, and there are 43 rooms) the room wasn't cleaned until about 1.30pm so when we wanted to pop into our room in the afternoon to maybe eat some lunch, get a drink or what not, we had to wait as it was being cleaned. However, I don't have any complaints about the actual cleaning itself. A second issue I had was how the pool can be used by anyone...on one day in particular, a family arrived at our pool in the afternoon and their kids were not very well behaved and made quite abit of noise and even used other peoples pool inflatables without seeking permission. I am not bothered by children, as kids will be kids, but it bugged me that they were creating quite a distraction and I noticed I was not the only person bothered by their presence.

One last issue was checking out. There are no clear instructions on what you should do if you check out. Our coach was picking us up at 8am and reception doesn't open until 9am, so we didn't know what to do with our key or air conditioning remote...eventually, we managed to find someone in the restaurant who told us to just leave the key at reception.

Just afew comments about Skala itself - it's a beautiful town that contains a vast amount of bars and restaurants so you do have alot of choice for eating and drinking in the afternoon and the evening. There are plenty of places to rent a car or go on excursions, and you are spoilt for choice when it comes to supermarkets and gift shops. One thing I did notice though is that not many of the supermarkets sold flavoured vodka, and as a vodka lover, I was abit dissapointed, so I had to buy my booze at the airport duty free.

If you're looking for something to do to kill a couple of hours, take a stroll into Skala and follow the signs to visit the Roman Villa. I found this place to be quite interesting and took quite afew snaps of the mosacis and the outlines of the seperate rooms that existed many many years ago. Afew restaurants I can recommend - The Pines, Flamengo, Siroco and the chinese....yes, the chinese is gorgeous!

Overall, this hotel was certainly very decent for a 3* B&B and I can highly recommend this to anybody looking for a place to stay in Skala.
