“Chalet Isabella, Verchaix”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

My wife and I stayed with Sarajane and Jimmy for the first time in Feb 2012 (booked again for Feb 13) and we had the best skiing holiday we've ever had. Like most we initially stayed in hotels for our first few skiing holidays but having tried the chalet experience we were completely hooked. Chalet Isabella is like taking the next step again. The chalet is beautiful and Sarajane and Jimmy are perfect hosts. Sarajane is a brilliant cook, the food is delicious, the skiing is amazing and I'm not sure I've had a better nights sleep in twenty years. Jimmy ran us around to the ski lift of our choice (Morillon is around 5 minutes away and Samoens is around 10 minutes) and was happy to come and pick us up when needed. Sarajane and Jimmy both know their skiing and were able to suggest the best places to ski which allowed us to get the most out of our week away. There's a great hot tub too.

Room Tip: We had a room that looked across the valley towards Morillon which was very special

After a year away we returned to Chalet Isabella for a long weekend and standards are still as high as ever.

Great food, beautiful accommodation and best of all a truly friendly and genuinely warm environment. Nothing is too much trouble and the balance is just right between being welcoming without being intrusive. Jimmy (the host) took us skiing and with his expert local knowledge knew exactly which slopes were in the best early season condition and would suite of limited technique well.

The rooms are elegant alpine charm with great bathrooms and shower facilities and the roaring fire which greets you at the end of a days skiing soon takes the chill away after a day in the mountains. Sarah-Jane’s cooking is a terrific, sophisticated but still plentiful. All in all our stay was elegant, charming and a real tonic after our frantic UK life. I can’t wait to go back.

A bit new to this Tripadvisor thing so going back over pervious trips.

We have stayed with Sarah & Jimmy three times now.

Our first trip was half term 05. We spent a fantastic Christmas there with a bunch of friends ( 3 families ) in 06 ,and really felt like we were 'at home' for Christmas without all the cooking, cleaning and washing up!! And returned again over new year 07/08.

They have a lovely family who added to the whole experience. Nothing was too much trouble, running us to slopes and collecting when we wanted even if the group finished at differnt stages ofthe day- i would not like to count the number of times Jimmy must drive to the slopes in a given week, let alone the season.

The chalet is almost 400 yrs old I understand but has been made into a very comfortable characterful home, set up in the mountains with splendid views of the piste at Samoen and Morillion- about 12 mins drive away- and the ski area is fantastic with 6 areas all linked including Flaine which has an off piste area to rival most resorts. Plus they are both ex Austrian qualified ski instructors will happliy ski with you to show you the best places to go in the conditions for that week- an added bonus. Just dont try to race their kids...you will loose !!!

If you need to walk to a bar then not for you, but if you want to get collected from the slopes ( after a few cheeky 'apres beers' of course) slip into a hot tub, relax before Sarah's excellent food and wine, then chill in front of the fire...this is where you should head.

Not been back for a while but feel another visit coming on soon now the memories have started flooding back:)-

Brilliant Chalet Isabella

Chalet Isabella is the home of Jimi, Sarajane and their 3 children, the entire family stay in the chalet as well as the guests. Don’t let this put you off as they are a fantastic family and when you walk into the kitchen it feels like a home from home. Chalet Isabella can only be described a “beautiful” a mixture of old and new. The chalet is set above Samoens on the mountainside at about 1050m and has amazing views of the Grand Massif ski area across the valley.

The location is not walking distance from the lifts or the centre of Samoens but Jimi and Sarajane will drop you off and pick you up at the gondola station of your choice. The chalet is only about 5 minutes drive to Morillon gondola and 10 minutes drive to Samoens gondola. If you do fancy a pint or two after skiing then Morillon is best for such activities. Ruby Leffe is a must! Large!!

Transport is not only provided during the day also on the cook’s night off. We did not experience any transport problems even Jimi and his son joined us for a drink in a bar which was a nice touch.

We had no problems with our room; the big bed was perfect to sleep on with a big heavy duvet to fall into after a hard day on the mountain. The shower was POWERFUL and HOT!!

The food was nice but we did feel a bit let down by having pork twice in a week. The chalet is advertised as luxury and we feel it needed more variety. Sarajane is a good cook; the afternoon cake was great as well as the starters and puddings.

We had a Brilliant time and we would come back again to Chalet Isabella.

Thank you to Sarajane, Jimi and the family for welcoming us to their home.

Jimmi and Sarahjane run this chalet brilliantly. It's a lovely property, but their commitment to looking after their guests is what really stands out. They take you to your choice of ski station when you want to go and pick you up in response to a quick text when it suits you. The food is lovely - home cooking with flair. On a white-out afternoon after coming off the slopes early, the fire was lit for us in the lounge, tea and cake were waiting for us, with a massive choice of DVDs. The hot tub is also lovely to relax in. The ski area is brilliant, and you're given good suggestions for planning your skiing (and lunch/gluwein stops). I highly recommend Chalet Isabella if you want relaxed comfort in very nice surroundings.

I’ve just returned from a long weekend break at Chalet Isobella. When we arrived, my luggage hadn’t been put on the plane, Jimmy was absolutely brilliant and went out of his way to collect my ‘lost luggage’, so I could get my skiing started! Jimmy and Sarahjane were lovely, relaxed hosts, with really good knowledge of the area. We had a great break and look forward to making a return trip.

Just returned from a fabulous short ski break with my my wife and two children. Chalet Isabella is a gorgeous traditional chalet that has been lovingly restored whilst maintaining many of the original features and provides wonderfully comfortable accommodation. The hosts were excellent throughout our stay and the food was superb. We all felt very welcome and enjoyed the Chalet experience. We would happily choose Chalet Isabella again next year!
