Pelican Beach - South Water Caye
Certificate of Excellence

My girlfriend and I spent 4 nights at the Pelican Beach Resort. After 30 hours of travel, a taxi, 4 planes and a boat ride, we were fantastically welcomed by Theresita, Leonard and the team making us really glad to have made the trip. The grilled lobster and coconut cake were most appreciated as our first meal in Belize.

We stayed 3 nights in the Sandpiper cottage and 1 night in room 5. Whilst the room was clean and comfortable, the cottages are way more special and worth the extra dollars.

Everything on the island is made to help you relax; the pristine beach and water, the sound of the wind in the palm trees, the attentive but non obstrusive staff and the tasty meals cooked fresh for you every day... couldn't have asked for more!

We would love to go back there every year if it wasn't this far!

Room Tip: Prefer the cottages to the rooms. Heron's Hideaway is the best of them.

My Husband and I stayed here for 3 night in January 2014. We loved it. It was an intimate and truly relaxing experience. Pelican Beach resort is a simple, rustic and clean resort on a perfect cay with perfect sand, water and palm trees. It is also eco friendly which is such a bonus. We went during high season and had no issues with any bugs what so ever. The food was clean and tasty and you could ask for seconds if you wanted for each meal. The cottage we stayed at was dreamy with nice breezes and a perfect view where we watched the sunrise every day. The staff was soo friendly. We already miss Leonard, Norma, Kevin and Theresita. Ritchie the boat captain was super nice and fun too. We enjoyed our snorkeling tour very much. We had perfect weather too so that was a bonus. If you are looking for a luxury experience with lots of frills this place is not for you but if you are looking for a tranquil, intimate, rustic and truly relaxing resort experience on a perfect secluded island comparable to Fiji this is exactly what you will get here at Pelican Beach Resort and it will not take you 24 hours to get there.

Room Tip: Herons cottage is the one to stay in.

What a place. We are not into big resorts and prefer low-key mellow places and chose to go to PB South Water Caye over Ambergris Caye in the north. From Dangriga, we took a small boat out to the island (there is also a slightly larger boat - 45' each way). The island is tiny and PB has the absolute best spot. There are only a few cabanas and the place holds a total of about 30-35 people when filled. This makes for a very peaceful and relaxing vibe. We stayed in Heron's Hideaway - hands-down the best cabin on the property in terms of location and privacy. The back porch overhangs the water. Imagine standing on the porch and watching fish underneath. There were about 4 dogfish (or mudsharks) that hung around under our porch every evening! The beach at the place is amazing - super clean, with hammocks slung from palm trees and since at any given time, people are out diving and fishing and snorkeling, you could have the beach to yourself. The water is warm, clean and you can just swim from the beach to the most amazing snorkeling. The staff were the friendliest and best ever and interesting and fun to talk to - especially the owners and the waitstaff. The food was quite good and they are willing to try to substitute dishes to the best of their abilities (remember that everything has to be brought in by boat). Dining under the stars by torchlight in beautiful weather is not to be missed. On New Year's Eve, Garifuna drummers came out and eveyone - staff, guests - danced under the stars and had a fabulous time.
Rooms are comfortable and clean but not luxe. Water is from stored rainwater and there are compost toilets (they flush in the rooms - so you won't really notice much of anything). My only suggestion would be to perhaps replace the beach towels every few days - they tended to get somewhat smelly with frequent use.
All in all - this is a place to unwind, relax, enjoy the company of friendly people and appreciate the beauty of the ocean and its denizens. Bring several books and be prepared to be depressed when you have to leave.

Wow! My experience here couldn't have been better. Places as beautiful and secluded as Pelican Beach are really quite rare. Hats off to the chef-the food here is the best I experienced during my two week stay in Belize. I would definitely recommend this resort to anyone. Many amenities... Snorkeling, games, books. Not to mention the view. The view of the sunset is picture perfect. Hands down great time.

Some friends and I went out and stayed at Pelican's Pouch on the South Water Caye recently. The experience was incomparable- the staff, the food, the water, the snorkeling- everything was better than I could have imagined. We stayed in a cute clean cabana, run off rain water and solar power. That alone is an amazing feat that I wish more resorts would follow. Our beds were comfy and they even provided bug spray for us. Each meal was artfully prepared and tasted even better than it looked. At night, we dined by candlelight, always with an excellent and friendly server. The snorkeling was beautiful; I didn't even wear fins and could swim out easily to see breathtaking coral and colorful fish. We could then relax in the hammocks on our porch and read a book, of which there is a large selection to choose from in the dining area. The staff is what really takes this resort to the next level. Everyone is so friendly and treats you as family. I couldn't ask for a better, more relaxing trip.

We loved our stay at Pelican Beach, from the pristine, stunning beach and healthy reef just feet away to wonderful conversations with managers Leonard and Theresita. Finding a place still this pristine and off the beaten path isn't easy. Great snorkeling/diving, beach, and lovely, simple little stand-alone rooms.

Room Tip: all rooms are great

The location: We loved our stay at this magical little spot. And I do mean little – you can literally walk from one end of the island to the other in under five minutes. The resort occupies about a quarter of the island, and from what we could see, it was the prettiest part, and strategically located next to the reef for snorkeling. The tiny beach is picture perfect, the sand clean, and the water is teeming with exotic fish. The reef forms a breakwater, so even if the weather is windy and there are swells out to sea, the water just off the beach is still calm to swim in. The reef is beautiful and draws a daily parade of snorkeling expeditions from the mainland, but even if you don’t have the confidence to swim out to the reef, there are still plenty of fish to observe in the waters near the beach.

Getting there: The company owns a resort by the same name at Dangriga, where you go to catch the boat to South Water Caye. Depending on the weather, the 45 minute ride in an open motorboat is either a pretty but bumpy outing, or, if a storm is up (as on our early morning return journey) an ordeal with swells and stinging rain as you clutch the hood of your raincoat over your face. However, we never felt unsafe with the boat pilot, who clearly knew how to navigate the waters and kept us and our belongings safe and (relatively) dry.

The accommodations: We stayed in a single cottage (Kingfisher) and would probably do so again if we returned; the double units looked like they would provide less privacy. The room was clean, attractive, comfortable, and featured great views through the palm trees of the ocean and beach areas. The large balcony had two comfy chairs plus two hammocks. The Heron’s Hideaway cottage also looked intriguing, kind of set off from the rest of the buildings and with a deck right over the ocean.

The staff and amenities: Leonard and Therisita are the managers, and are warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. For much of our four days there, we were the only guests, and experienced a nice balance of being left alone when we wanted, and friendly conversation at other times. The food was terrific, a fixed menu that changed every day, always featuring fresh local produce, seafood, and authentic Belizean cuisine. The staff keep the grounds immaculate and were consistently friendly and helpful.
