This is a very small place with ruins.. There are coloured wall paintings here. Thats the big deal with this place.
There are lots of stairs here. Some are in good shape and some are really scary!!! BE careful here and wear good sturdy shoes if you want to climb to the top.
Bring sunhat, sunblock and water.

We drove our car from Palenque. It took about 2 1/2 hours to get to the town of Lacanja. We paid the obligatory fee to enter the road which lead to the ruin site. 25 pesos each, about $5 for two of us. We stopped at the information booth and were charged 5 pesos to use the restroom...without toilet paper, remember to bring your own! We were not permited to drive our car beyond that point. The Lacandon Indians require you to board their vehicle for the 1 mile drive to Bonampak. The ride cost another 75 pesos each. Upon arrival the INAH entrance fee was additional. It was a fairly expensive trip but we enjoyed the site. The preserved murals are amazing and vibrant at 1600+ years old. In this case it is more economical to take a guided tour out of Palenque which includes the ruins of Yaxchilan, of which I have also written a review. Take the tour!!!

If you are adventuresome and into Mayan ruins, seriously consider a visit to Bonampak. It is located in the Lancandon Selva of southeron Mexico near the Guatemalan border. It would be quite a drive from Palenque for a day trip, but doable. Better yet, spend the night at a local hacienda and don't sweat the travel. This area is now safe for tourist travel during the day and heavily patrolled by federales, likely both for drug trafficking from Guatemala and for keeping an eye on the Zapatistas, which continue to irritate the government now and again. But tourists are treated very politely. As Bonampak is located inside the Selva, only Lancondon Maya are permitted to drive you into the site. You park your car, pay for a van fare, which is fairly expensive if it's just two of you. The van hangs out at the site for two hours until you are through. Two hours are about all you need unless you are a mural fanatic. Beware of the guide on site who ripped us off. He charged us $40.00 for a two-hour tour and disappeared on us after about 45 minutes. And we had prepaid. Be sure to work on both the rate and your payment strategy. Having the guide is worth the cost unless you are a well-read Mayanista. That said, the murals themselves are breath-taking. Flash photography is not allowed, but my husband was allowed to use his headlamp to illuminate the murals (they're in windowless buildings) and we took some very good photos. The guide will be helpful in explaining the meaning of the murals and the cosmology expressed in them. These murals changed the long-standing thinking about the Mayans as peace-loving people as the murals portray war and sacrifice, music and celebration. Bring water and snacks as none are available.

Small site, so it is convenient to go if you visit Yaxchilan. Main attraction are very well preserved or restored paintings. It is an amazing experience.

We have visited a number of Aztec, Toltec and Mayan sites in Mexico and the frescos ("Pinturas") at Bonampak are the best we have seen. The city is small but the visit is worth it to see these amazing paintings. I recommend taking a combined tour to Yazchilan and Bonampak with Mayatur.
