“Stunning!!!”

This is an incredible nature experience, don't miss it.

It's possible to do this by yourself, just take a collective between San Cristobal de las Casas and Tuxtla for 45 pesos per person (from San Cristobal) and ask to be let off at the "Embarcadero Cahuare". It's only a couple of steps down the side of the road and you can buy your ticket there for 190 pesos for a 2 hour trip (price in Oct. 2013). However, there are organized tours available that will bring you there for approx. the same price and that are more convenient since they usually pick you up at the hotel/hostel.

We were amazed by the nature (high cliffs and amazing rock formations and plants on the cliffs) and the wildlife (crocodiles!!! :-) ) It is a shame about the trash in the canyon. Our guide explained to us that the problem only exists in the rainy season. People throw trash on the streets, the heavy rainfalls wash it into the smaller rivers and the rivers flow into the canyon where it al collects. They are cleaning it but it just keeps accumulating...

Nevertheless, the nature will astound you, don't miss this if you are in the region!

“A must visit!”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

The Sumidero canyon is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.
The mountains, the waterfalls, the nature and the peace you will experience there is truly unique.
It is located in Tuxtla Gutierrez, about 45 min by car from San Cristobal de las Casas. The boat trip costs 190 MXN per person, and runs for 2.5 hours. I don't think any of the boat guides speak English, but believe me, you won't need that to be able to appreciate the canyon's beauty.
The place is a bit polluted, but they are working on it, they are creating awareness campaigns for the locals, and they have been systematically cleaning several parts of the river.
Don't miss it!

“Impressive natural sight”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

Organised a tour from San Cristobal with Otisa for around M$250 and was about an hour away by shuttle. Boat trip that followed was great (about 2 hours maybe?) but the driver only spoke Spanish. Not sure if English ones are an option so just make sure you do your reading earlier (on Wikipedia or something) so you know all the things along the way. Saw 4-5 crocs and heaps of birds. Truly impressive place to see even though the amount of rubbish/pollution is a little depressing.

“Wish I could give it a higher rating”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

Ok, yes, there is a lot of trash floating in places (empty plastic bottles and styrofoam, nothing smelly) but this is an AMAZING place that neither of us had ever heard of before the travel agency recommended. 1000 meter cliffs. Rain forest, sheer walls and never have seen anything like the "Christmas Tree". It reminded my brother very much of the Yangtse Valley in China. DON'T MISS THIS!

“Powerful nature...and horrible waste”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

The tour by boat is nice for the beautiful scenery, the natural cascades and the possibility to sea crocodiles and pelicans really close-by. By the tons of waste and pollution among which the birds live break the spell and leave you with a "sour taste" on your way back.
