“Average Food; Decent Portions; Reasonably Inexpensive”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

Staying in Palenque is a lot like staying at an all-inclusive: most hotels are clustered together away from the downtown area itself. Finding local food, let alone Chiapan food is no easy task - Everything is catered to the tourist and therefore lacks authenticity. El Huachinango Feliz sits right in the middle of all this, and much of its clientele is local - so far, so good, right? Trouble is, except for locally caught freshwater fish, which is on the menu, they specialize in shrimp and octopus dishes, neither of which are local products. Every meal comes with a shrimp salad and it's truly pedestrian-right down to the ketchup/mayonnaise dressing. Your best bet is a grilled, whole fish. Mine was cooked well, easy to eat,but its skin was not crispy; it seemed more steamed than grilled. Most people seemed to be ordering it fried which may be why: crispy skin. I had a sangria with my meal and a 10% gratuity is automatically added to the check. Total spent: $14.00

“Stay away!”
Reviewed June 20, 2013

If you care for your health you should stay away. We have had camarones a la Veracruzana that definitely were foul. We have had diarrhea for the rest of our trip!
The location is noisy: music + soccer games + life bands - all at once!!

“Excellent food, surprise setting!”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

Great food (especially sea food) and very friendly and helpful staff.Tomas and Romelia were excellent! The place is located close to accommodations and surrounded by trees and other eateries. Nice, colorful setting! A true surprise in Palenque. If you drive to the place be careful with the "topes" (speed bumps) as there are a couple higher than mountains! We enjoyed the visit very much and had a great time and fine memories! Can only but recommend this place, for the food, prices, atmosphere and its friendly personnel.

“Poplular decent restaurant”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Very popular restaurant next to the Hotel Xibalba. I had pescado mojo de ajo. Had a little too much garlic and butter for my taste. There were plenty of other fish and shrimp dishes to choose from. My kids had grilled chicken which they loved. Service was good, beer was cold, and a free appetizer plate of shrimp, onions, tomatoes, and cilantro was provided, plus chips and salsa. Seemed like mostly locals eat here even though it is in the tourist zone.

“Great seafood, should come under Palenque restaurants”
Reviewed April 4, 2013

We stayed 2 nights in Palenque & ate here both nights(hotel was across the road), first as a couple, then with another couple we met in the ruins, both nights the seafood was amazing, sorry can't remember the names of the dishes, but we probably tried over 6 of them. Portion sizes are big, prawn & vege skewer, bigger then any shish you will get in a middle eastern restaurant, plate of camerones(prawns) is almost to big to finish, prawn cocktail was demolished, and the whole fried fish is up there with any good whole Thai fried fish minus the red curry, and I will always demolish a fish, head, tail & everything in between, & aguachilies dish like ceviche.
The service is ok, maybe could improve by being a little more attentive by wait staff, but food was always quick to come, nothing was forgotten or wrongly ordered with our limited spanish. Maybe one extra wait staff would solve this, both times the restaurant was full with tourists and more locals from Chiapas or Mexico, I'm not sure, first downstairs and nice upstairs also, best place for a table is outside.
On the second visit, the music was too loud to have a conversation, with someone that is hard of hearing, on a few requests for softer, they did turn it down, but we also appreciate this is Mexico where music & colour are a big part of the day.
At this stage I'm unable to give any information about reservations, deliveries & there is no scenic view, you go here for the seafood.
It's a shame that this restaurant does not come up in the Palenque list of restaurants, and deserves to be somewhere in the top 10, lucky for us, right place right time.
