“Nice place in the jungle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2014

We had a good one-night stay at Las Guacamayas.
The hotel infrastructure is amazing.
Bungalow was clean and pretty comfy.
Food was good at the restaurant.
We took the jungle trekk and the boat trip which were both great excursions with a good qualified guide: Tomas.

On the other hand, hotel reception and restaurant staff was neither helpful nor nice.

The place is in the jungle, the rooms were clean and simple. Donot expect luxury but a cabin with a Bathroom (they also have other arrangements). The roof was a mosquito net in addition to another roof that was made of palm.

For some adventure days in the jungle this place is very nice, the facilities harmonize with the place. In the night, at 3am you can listen to the howler monkeys and early in the morning, at 6-7am to the birds, it’s a very nice experience.

The food is good, when we arrived the restaurant had around 5-6 tables and the service was very slow, we waited for more than an hour to get serve but in the morning the service was fast. The quality of the food was good. The prices were reasonable.

We took the boat trip and it was very good, we saw many animals in the jungle and it was very interesting. The sites were also very beautiful.

The place does not accept credit cards, only cash.

From Comitan to Las Guacamayas we did 4 hours and the roads are not the best so go during the day light. The nearest gas stations is about one hour away but you can buy gas from tanks from the small towns around (10 minutes)

Great place to visit.

Really Enjoyed this lodge, prices were reasonable, a little pricier for a private bathroom but it made up for it with the lush landscaping, friendly staff and awesome location. It's a little in the middle of nowhere and the closest cities/towns are at least 4-5 hours away.

Ate at the restaurant dinner and breakfast, both were good and they're habanero sauce was one of the best. Staff though at the restaurant had some attitude problems and need to be trained to work as wait staff. Other than that stay at this amazing jungle lodge.

We arrived kind of late and had no reservation so our only option was to stay in a semi-private corner river view bungalow sharing the bathroom, we didn't have any problems with this arrangemen, shared facilities we're clean, lots of hot water and the view from the bungalow was amazing, especially been woken up by howler monkeys at 4am.... priceless..

Room Tip: If you're on a budget or want a guaranteed river view stay in one of the shared bathroom bungalo...

Inside the second largest jungle in the world. Beautiful place! You must take the boat trip! The place is very romantic wooden made by the locals, do not expect luxury! They have hand made hamacas in the porch of the cabin. Take care of insects they are everywhere.

Jungle lodges are among my favorite places to stay anywhere. And they're quirky! This one has many wonderful amenities and falls short in a few places. As a hub for fantastic adventures and activities it is excellent. The staff was a bit lax in their attention to detail which accounts for the average rating. We took a cold shower because they hadn't turned on the hot water heater for us! We were a large group who had made reservations some time ago and there was just no excuse for this. All rooms had cold water.
That being said, the restaurant was excellent and the staff in general was friendly and accommodating. Clean rooms and beautiful grounds made this a destination worth returning to.

Las Guacamayas sits on the banks of the Río Lacantún, which forms the eastern border of the Parque Natural Montes Azules. The irony of L.G. is its presenting itself as an “ecotourist” facility, when the community running it has decimated the jungle in their area, clearing the trees to run cows and chickens.

Everything at L.G. is priced at double its value: lodging, tours, meals. We paid M$600 [$48] a night for a very nice room with two double beds, a porch, hot water bathroom, etc. (They also have shared accommodations with 3 twin beds for M$150 [$12] each and a camping area.) We paid an astonishing M$1,000 [$80] for a 2-hour boat tour into the Montes Azules reserve across the river. Meals at the restaurant, which were generally of good quality, ran about M$100 [$8] apiece without drinks.

The boat tour did bring us close to a fair amount of wildlife. We saw parrots, scarlet macaws, and at least three species of monkey.

There is nothing to do at Las Guacamayas itself: it’s just lodging and the restaurant. Unlike Amazon lodges, from which you can hike into the jungle, the area around L.G. is all cleared forest and chicken ranches. I recommend a stay of one night, the 7:00 AM boat tour, then moving on.

THE REASON WHY WE ENDED UP HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE: We were on our way to Lacanja Chansayab having come from staying at Parador Santa Maria in La Trinitaria. We had been advised to avoid driving through Chaipas at night, but up until this point we felt the warnings were unwarranted. However this was not the case coming into Reforma Agraria, it was already getting dark and the place where we were headed was still another 2 hours away. We passed 2 military checkpoints , they were quite friendly and respectful , they didn't scare us . What freaked us out was when we crossed a bridge coming into town, a shirtless adolescent boy was sitting on the bridge holding a M16 assault rifle. Not a good combination , there was no obvious reason for it , he wasn't protecting cattle or a flock of sheep from wolves he was simply loitering and watching. We decided right then and there to take a chance and take the 30 minute detour to see if Guacamayas had a room available and just call it a night. Before we could make it there, another kid around 13 years old circled around us in a fairly new quad racer mad-dogging us and looking into our car. At this point we didn't care if Guacamayas had a room available or not we would have been happy sleeping in their parking lot.
NOW ONTO THE ACTUAL LODGE: I can appreciate their story and what they are attempting to do here by establishing a breeding ground for Scarlet Macaws but lets get real here, the jungle is cleared all around this place, ecolodge is an exaggeration. I would have been pretty disappointed had I centered my entire vacation around visiting this lodge. The worst part was the lack of wildlife other than hearing the Howler monkeys , plus the only Guacamayas we saw were in cages. If you want a real jungle experience( read my very first review) this is not the place to stay. Also do not stay in the room called "La Cojolita" unless you want to be woken up at 7:00 am by a very loud Generator( or water pump not sure which) instead of chirping birds.

In their defense it wasn't all bad.
We showed up on Christmas day with no reservations, we arrived at 6:00 pm and thankfully they did have a room.Staff was efficient and the rooms were clean and pleasant. The food in the restaurant was great and reasonable considering they could have price gouged its patrons due to lack of options anywhere nearby. In the wee hours of the morning possibly around 3:00 or 4:00 AM the monkeys started howling. They were amazing but what I will remember the most is, the Monkeys would howl and then the cows and a donkey would answer back. As memorable as that was, overall we all agreed this was the least friendly and least interesting place in all of Chiapas that we traveled through.
