“I expected more, but was not totally dissatisfied”

I expected this tree to have witch doctors and more people around, sadly none of that was present.

On the whole, do not expect much. And you will not miss out on anything if you do not come here (considering the long distance uphill)

How to reach?
Take a trike - the tree is a good 30-45 minutes uphill drive from Coco grove resort.
The route is scenic as it passes rice fields, rice terraces and coconut plantations.

More about the Balete tree
The tree is like any balete tree, but very old (150 years +), big and has a water body below which contains fish. A popular activity is for visitors to dropping berries into the water, which the fish rush for.

You can walk around the tree, and even hang by it's supporting roots (they are very strong! Good for what we call here int eh Philippines "wacky shots" - photographs!)

My plans took a turn when I chatted with a stall vendor about Siquijor's mysterious healers. I would require local knowledge to seek them out so I negotiated with a motorbike driver to take me to the interior villages of Siquijor for a fee of 620 php on a condition that I would be brought to a village healer. He was hesitant at first, worried that he might not find the healer's home but after some confirmations with his mates, we shook hands and we had a deal. The first stop, not too far from San Juan, is the mystical 400 years old Balete tree. Legend has it that the tree is bewitched and its roots sprout spring water from the ground. The villagers then built a pool containing the spring water for people to dip in. Any ill and evil notions about this tree were effectively squashed when children splashed about in the pool. I wondered if they knew about its legend?Nevertheless the tree still looked creepy to me.

A stop over at this centuries-old balete tree was a refreshing experience. A dip in the cool spring water treated our tired feet with a relaxing fish foot spa.

The Balete drive in Quezon City is famous because of its age and enchanting powers. but the balete tree in Siquijor is older than the one in Quezon City.

She's located along the national road and can be seen immediately because of her beauty. Locals used to wash their clothes on the pond, and you can even see fishes swim along. :)
