Just returned from a week at this hotel with a school ski group and nothing but praise for the host, staff and hotel. Set high above the town of Landeck, it enjoys good views across the valley which some of the dining rooms and the terrace overlook. The town itself had more charm than we had expected and there is a pleasant and easy-ish walk up to the castle opposite: spot Rudl'sWetterstation in the garden there (basically, a hanging stone: when swinging, its windy; when wet, its raining etc!) Landeck has a good range of supermarkets and shops (better valued that St Anton, we thought) and we had a great night at Milano's Pizza Restaurant (Thank you Chino and Salih !)
The public rooms at the Sonne are quite spacious and characterful. There is a large Sauna in a "wellness" suite which Karl, the proprietor, is always happy to preheat for you. The two-laned bowling alley, also in the basement, is surprisingly large and modern.
The bedrooms were cleaned daily: all were immaculate and en-suite, and most were quite roomy. Considering there were two school groups in the hotel at the time, there was little noise and private guests did not seem inconvenienced.
The food was plentiful, although breakfasts proved a little repetitive and the evening meals were under the constraints of a school budget: private guests clearly fared better. Sebastian, the waiter, was a treasure, working all hours and very popular with the kids.
For a school party, Karl (the owner) was a godsend. He was always available to help with
bookings, advice and local knowledge - and spoke excellent English! He could not have been a more attentive host. Definitely a hotel to which I would return, with or without a school group!

We recently had a long weekend (Friday to Monday) staying at the Hotel Sonne in Landeck. This was our first time to Austria and we were on a group trip of about 50 people so we occupied the whole hotel. Our package deal included our accommodation, continental buffet breakfast, evening meal, beer, wine, tea, coffee and soft drinks (although without realising it until our last night we had been charged for a mixer -which we thought was a bit naughty on the hotels part). Also included was 2 nights entertainment, one of which was a fun evening of traditional Tirolean music and dancing - with leather shorts and plenty of thigh slapping LOL - and the second night a man playing an accordion. We also had an organised trip to Neuschwanstein castle in Bavaria, which is well worth a visit. It’s about 2 hours by coach but the scenery travelling through the mountains and valleys is an added bonus,.

As it is set on a hill, this hotel has lovely views over the town, church, castle, valley and mountains. We were warmly welcomed by the owner and were quickly given our room keys – we had already been told our room number by our organiser before we arrived. Even numbered rooms have the views and odd numbered rooms face the car park at the back, but you’re not in the room much so it didn’t really matter. We had room 106 which was quite spacious and had a settee and a table with 3 chairs, and a very large bed which was 2 single beds together to make a superking - but we had 2 single duvets which was a bit strange and the bottom sheet had had rips that had been sewn up ! There was plenty of wardrobe space and hangers and 2 bedside units with drawers but no tea/coffee making facilities. The room was clean but the bedside table, lamps and shades were dusty. The curtains were thin cotton without any lining and were not quite wide enough to cover the windows. They did not match the blue furniture or carpet as they were an abstract design in varying shades of orange which was a shame at it could have been a pretty room. In the bathroom we had 2 hand towels and 2 bath towels which weren’t changed automatically, but I expect if we had asked for clean towels we would have got them without any problem. Our bathroom also had a bath with a shower over, which wouldn’t stay upright on the bracket and fell forwards which could easily soak the floor if you weren't careful. There was a Dove soap dispenser (it smelt like Dove soap too), a small bar of hand soap and a hairdryer. Shampoo and conditioner is not supplied. Our friends room looked like it was either in the first stages of being decorated (paint patches on the walls) or it needed decorating. They had a shower cubicle, which was a bit grubby, and their shower head would not stay upright neither.

The hotel itself is graded as a 3 star but if it had been in the UK then I don’t think it would have been higher than a 2 star due to it being a bit ‘tatty’ but perhaps because the hotel has the facilities of a sauna, steam room, pool table and a couple of bowling lanes this bumped the rating up ? On first impression it was gloomy inside the hotel with old furniture and pictures but then we realised this gave it character. Sadly, smoking is serious business in such a clean country and the bar area was smoky but as there was a lovely waiter (Sebastian), who done an excellent job of serving us, we didn’t need to go to the bar, although you had to go through it to or from the rooms. The pool room smelt of stale smoke (this is next to the bar) and the pool table was a bit dirty - but that didn’t stop us playing pool. There is also an electronic darts board in the room. We didn’t use the sauna or steam room so can’t comment on those although we did go down to have a look but they were locked (they are in the cellar area with the bowling alley). Outside there is a nice patio area that looks out over the town, where we would meet up for drinks and coffee. The restaurant has the views over the town too with big picture windows. Our evening meals were nice although limited - our first night was a set menu of clear soup with noodles, schnitzel with potatoes and veg plus buffet salad and the dessert was apple strudel. On our second evening we had tomato soup to start, ham wrapped around a sort of coleslaw then a choice of either pork in a sauce or fish in a sauce with potatoes and veg, buffet salad and ice cream. Our last evening was a set menu again of clear soup with a big dumpling, then meat in a creamy sauce (we were told it was ‘calf’) potatoes and veg with the buffet salad then a slice of sponge cake.

There are quite a few things to visit in Landeck and as the Saturday was freetime to ourselves we went to the castle and museum and the church which has an amazing cemetery - every grave had flowers on and all the headstones were clean and shiny, The whole cemetary was was immaculate. We also had a look around the town which has various shops (including a couple of nice clothes shops and cake shops), and a tourist information bureau where we were able to pick up a map of the area. We then walked to the Zammer Lochputz waterfall which is via a lovely village and along the river, about a leisurely hours stroll from the hotel. Again, this is worth a visit and the views of Landeck from there are stunning.

Upon departing the hotel we were all individually bade ‘Wiedersehen’ by the owner and he shook everyone’s hand and waved us off which was a nice touch.

In summary this is a friendly, easy going, traditional hotel in a good location and we would stay there again. The only negative is its housekeeping needs improving.
