I spent 7 delightful days at a yoga retreat on Lady Elliot Island in August last year and am planning to return this August.
Our time on LEI was magical. The whales were around every day providing amazing spectacles and excellent photos. You could listen to their chatter whilst snorkelling. I was hard to drag yourself out of the water (and this is from someone who rarely enters the water other than to paddle). The snorkelling in the lagoon was fun with abundant fish, turtles to stroke and swim with, the variety of coral and sea life was amazing. After a very informative reef walk with Kim was able to identify many of the fish and coral species. When the tide went out you had the choice of snorkelling on the other side of the island about 10 minute walk or taking a reef walk in the lagoon.
The resort is not for those looking for a luxury, pampered holiday. However, for those wanting to enjoy nature and have an amazing marine experience in a comfortable environment then you will not be disappointed.
The staff were great particularly happy Kim, and the activities provided ensured you left with an understanding of the fragility of the Great Barrier Reef and an appreciation of its beauty and value.
Certainly an amazing experience and a trip I would recommend to those who have a genuine interest an amazing marine experience. Definitely not the location for someone wanting a luxury, pampered gourmet holiday

We came to stay two nights - and regretted it. Go there as long as you can (you won't want to leave!), and if your budget allows, take a bungalow facing the sea - beautiful. The snorkelling is superb in the reef surrounding the island, lots of fish, turtles (you might see three different species, Loggerhead, Green and Hawksbill). We didn't see any manta rays, unfortunately, but many other positive experiences made up for this. Staff is also a real plus on the island, very committed, and I have never met a manager who'd essentially go as far as it'd take to make your stay pleasant. We loved it.

We only spent one night in the resort(should plan for a longer stay next time...)stayed in eco cabin 12 which had a direct view of the beach. All the staff are smiley, friendly and helpful - they genuinely want to make sure you have a wonderful time.

It is simple in many ways - ideal for us but I can imagine that some people who expect lots of luxuries might not see the luxury in the simplicity.

The local food is delicious and the buffet spread is nice.Chef Gus helped us with the halal food and assist us on every meal time we had.

On snorkeling, we had a great time and saw lots during our time snorkeling. Beautiful and colourful coral gardens can be seen almost everywhere in the water. We used pool-noodles which were great as it definitely gave us lots of confidence in swimming further away from the shore. The second day was much better and it also helped that we were more confident on the second day as we went on the glass bottom boat and snorkeled at the deeper part of the ocean. The visibility was great,we saw manta, lots of turtles, and so many sea creatures. We were so lucky to spot an octopus just near the beach. We found 2 turtle hatchlings and to see them making their way to the ocean was an amazing experience.

It was windy for our stay and so our cabins were quite noisy because of the wind - you get used to the wind and the noisy birds...there were birds every where on the island..

We had a wonderful wonderful time and I would recommend Lady Elliot highly to people looking to unwind and relax without lots of fussy luxuries and to those who want to experience the great barrier reef...this place is simply amazing. Can't wait to go back.

A very special thanks to our guide,Marty...He's very attentive, knowledgeable and can assist you to explore the island.Thank you lady elliot eco resort that make our stay memorable and our experience in the great barrier reef unforgettable.

We stayed in a reef room for seven nights. Food, birds, staff, weather and accommodation were as expected or even better than expected. But it still felt like a 2 or 3 star school camp with the pool table just outside the open doors on one side of the meal room with the adjoining bar and TV area on the other side. One family of five even set themselves up in the dining area during daylight hours. A big plus was that we saw hatchlings on 6 of the seven nights, (with two hatchlings on two nights) and numerous Manta Rays up real close on 3 of 4 Snorkeling trips. However, in my view, this is not the place for the novice snorkeller as there was often a strong current making snorkeling conditions difficult. Plus the beaches are mainly various grades of broken coral, not sand, which also made walking on the beaches a challenge with bare feet. In that regard LEI advises you to take your reef walkers with you when you go snorkelling, which is not an easy task. Further, just getting to and from as well as getting on and off the snorkel boat both on 'the land' and in deep water can be challenging. In my opinion, a reasonable degree of fitness, agility and daring is required to make the most of LEI. If you are thinking of spending time on LEI then do your research in respect to tides, weather and the seasons for wild life re birds, turtles and Manta Rays. It's 10/10 for wild life but overall three stars. Oh, and don't forget to pack the iodine with you!

Room Tip: The tents sound economical but they may be too hot? Pay extra for a reef room.

Our trip was fantastic! This is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and I have travelled quite a bit. We were there for turtle nesting and hatching season. Also summer it is a bird breeding site. We saw many turtles laying eggs on the beach you must be up very early in the morning to see them. Accommodations are fine, basic, but if you go to Lady Elliot you are not there for the accommodations. We saw so much marine life just snorkeling. The turtles swim right close and let you rub their backs. Saw loads of coral, rays, fish, turtles, reef sharks etc...Our family of 4 did a day dive which was fantastic and highly recommended. Andreas the manager is outstanding as well as all the staff. Andreas was passing out appetizers at cocktail hour every night, he got us a rollaway bed in a flash, he is very very attentive and runs the place very well. You can see he is truely dedicated to Lady Elliot and the guests. The staff are all like family. If you don't like bird droppings then you may not want to go. The couple staying next to us were very bothered by it, we were ok with it. The only thing is we had to wash our deck off on arrival as it was covered with bird droppings. In summer it is a bird breeding grounds which is cool, but noisy at night. Bring good ear plugs and a noise machine. Food was ok. All in all if you are a nature lover and want to see marine life and birds galore, this is the place. I have been to Heron Island years ago, which is great too, but this is very unique and different. I think definitely worth going to.Flying on and off the island is a once in a lifetime dream, just superb!

Room Tip: Beach front rooms are the best I think. Our kids had an eco hut which is good for kids. Beachfront room had a queen bed and bathroom. They were very adequate. Also had it's own bathroom. Eco huts share a bathroom with others. Our kids eco hut was right next to the mutton bird which screams bloody murder (it literally sounds like that) at night, so ask to be away from the mutton bird. :)
