“Fantastic Family Getaway”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

LEL was a truly unexpected Eco Friendly gem!

My family of 5 (3 teenagers) were visiting Australia from Calgary Canada and spent 5 wonderful days on the island.
The snorkelling and scuba staff were excellent. We saw turtles, sharks, a squids, an eel, a sea snake and those incredible mantas!

The tours and talks gave us a greater appreciation of the nature we were seeing and experiencing. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

It was a great place to relax, and unplug.

We were surprised as we traveled in Australia how few people seemed to know about Lady Elliott. We would definitely recommend it, as a "must do" for anyone planning a trip to Australia that wants to truly experience, rather than just visit the Great Barrier Reef.

Room Tip: The Eco Huts are a unique way to experience the island

Spent 11 Days on the Island, 9 days diving (20 Dives) visiting from the UK with a Aus friend on his recommendation.

As a relatively inexperienced PADI AOW diver the attention and patience shown by the guys (and girls) in the dive shop made a huge contribution to making me feel comfortable in the water. Diving itself was beyond anything I could have anticipated (having previously dived off Bali and Flores) with (mostly) crystal clear waters and Manta's, sting rays, grouper, turtles, sharks and huge shoals of fish in abundance. Even the professional underwater photographer who accompanied me on most of my dives said it was exceptional

What was also exceptional was the warmth of the welcome from all the staff from the maintenance staff to Peter Gash himself. The commitment and enthusiasm shown by everyone to the eco ambitions of the Island, above and below water was infectious and deeply impressive

Cabins were comfortable and clean (mine with a great view of breaching humpbacks off the reef!) and the buffet breakfast and dinner impressive in both quality and quantity

I made a big mistake in not taking up my friends invitation to visit years ago, despite being resident in the UK I am already plotting my return

Room Tip: Cabins with Sea views obviously the best but cheaper accommodation available in permanent Tents. As...

We (family - 2 children 8/10) travelled to LEI in winter (27th June to 5th July) to get away from the cold in the south for 8 nights, the holiday was great just what was needed.

It was school holidays and there were a few other children on the island which made it ideal for the kids club - to which is run well with very helpful staff that made it so enjoyable for the children.

The accommodation (2 b/r #3) has great views to the reef - as with all. The rooms were good although the lounge/seats are very uncomfortable and not a place to sit to read.

The food was good - we have a daughter with allergies and this was accommodated for at every meal - thank you.

The activity's, diving, snorkelling and walks were all well managed and a good education for the kids who wanted to do everything every day - that says it all. The kids had a ball snorkelling on the reef flat and out with the manta rays. Not to mention the whales migrating and seeing them each day is wonderful.

To be away from the phone, internet and TV is ideal - and not missed at all as so much to do.

Overall we had a great family holiday - quality time together and the comfort of knowing the children were looked after when on an activity.

We will be back.

Room Tip: Go for a 2 bedroom suit.

This place is pretty close to paradise on earth. We spent three whole days on this beatiful island, snorkelling, scubadiving, reefwalking and having a great time.
The bungalows are spacious and clean. The food is good, and the people working here are really great.
An expensive place, but well worth it.

We decided to go back to Lady Elliot given that the resort, since early this year, is now managed by John Johanson, who previously managed Heron Island. In 2011 we did not have such a good experience on Lady Elliot but, did enjoy the diving and given the new manager, we thought we'd try LEI again in 2013. And we weren't disappointed. The organisation of dinner and breakfast was much better, we didn't have to “fight” with students or personnel (!) to fill our plates. I still find the dive-times a little curious: 7:15 in the morning and 1:15 in the afternoon. 9-10AM and say 2-3PM, which allows time for breakfast and lunch would be the better option. If there are people for an earlier dive than that should be possible as well. The accommodation is being renovated but overall is comfortable and is a work in progress. The quality of the meals has improved and overall our experience was positive and we'll probably be back for the hatching of the turtles. We were delayed in Sydney and missed our scheduled connection to the island from Hervey Bay but LEI let us shift our holiday up by one day thus we still had 5 nights or relaxation. If you're like us and enjoy communing with nature without phone, internet or TV, LEI is the place to go.

Room Tip: Any room away from the restaurant provides for a quieter experience and increase overall fitness.

Stayed late July/early August for a week, took a few days to get into the rhythm of the place, but didn't want to leave by the end of our stay. Family of 5 with 3 teenage kids, we stayed in eco huts, which are noisy in the wind, and very basic - if not a bit scruffy. But so glad we made that choice, as walking to the loo block (also a bit scruffy, but scrupulously clean...so who cares?) at night is an experience in itself, seeing the stars, listening to the waves. My husband rightly pointed out that 3 adolescents with jet lag need a reason to get outside! At first we thought LEI was overpriced, but then you realise that everything has to be brought in, the restrictions on the place are huge and the leaseholders (who run the resort) do seem to be trying to bring the island back to its former natural glory. In fact the (incredibly helpful and friendly) staff are almost zealous in explaining how the de-salination works, how the tree planting is going, what an amazing marvel the Barrier Reef is. Basically, relax, eat like a pig, go exploring - there is nowhere to get lost, do the activities on offer (even the coconut bowling got my 16 year old son howling with laughter), and get in the sea. If you've never snorkelled (like me) and don't see what the fuss is about, you will understand by the time you leave. Best thing? floating underwater listening to distant whale song in the big blue. Go in the Australian winter - we were told September is good to - it may be a bit cool, but the visibility (sea) is good, and you get the whales. Oh yes.

Room Tip: If you are used to camping, the eco huts are a definite step up. We were very pleased with choosing...

Before we visited LEI last week, I had checked out other reviews on tripadvisor and while we still booked 4 nights there, our expectations were pretty low. Right from checking in for the short light plane flight to the island in Hervey Bay, to the moment we left and were waved off by the staff, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. (Some of the staff wave to all arriving and departing flights - a nice touch). We stayed in a Reef unit, which has a dble bed +a bunk bed, with en suite shower and loo. The deck outside overlooked the beach and the ocean. It was clean and more than adequate, although my husband found the mattress a bit soft. The meals were not fine dining but there was always something to appeal to us and it was plentiful. The staff were all very friendly, helpful and knowledgable about the flora and fauna of the island and its surrounding reef. I dived, snorkelled, did a bird watching tour, a reef walk and a trip on glass bottomed boat and that was only a fraction of what was available.

Room Tip: Reef units overlook the beach, and have en suite facilities. The eco units are behind but still clos...
