Dunkery Beacon Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 27, 2012

Stayed at Dunkery Beacon for 3 nights at end of March. Chose it because of the excellent reviews so was a bit surprised to find out it had new owners. However, no need to be concerned! You'd have never known that John and Jane had only recently taken over, from the home made scones on arrival to the excellent breakfasts every morning (vegetarian sausages not a problem), their hospitality was first class throughout our stay. We had the room at the top of the house, it was larger than I expected with it's own sofa and was very comfortable. The views were stunning from the windows in the bedroom and bathroom. In fact, they told us that they had only recently had a chimney removed so it didn't impede the view, shows what lengths they will go to for their guests!
The hotel is ideally located for walking, with Dunkery Beacon literally on the doorstep and, of course, access to the rest of Exmoor. Wootton Courtenay is a lovely village, with a few houses, a church and it's own little village store. No pub I'm afraid (can't have everything!) but you're close to both Dunster and Porlock that have good restaurants, pubs etc.
If you're looking for somewhere to stay on Exmoor, I'd highly recommend Dunkery Beacon and I wish John and Jane all the best. We'd certainly stay again in the future.

Many thanks for your kind comments and apologies for not replying sooner - we didn't receive notification of your review from Tripadvisor until a day ago. So glad you both enjoyed your stay here and the breakfasts John rustled up every morning. We are hoping to introduce evening meals four nights a week once we are granted our alcohol licence, so you won't have to traipse into Dunster or Porlock every evening in search of good food and wine - it'll be right on your doorstep!

We hope to see you again.

Best wishes,

Jane & John

We have just had our fourth annual visit to The Dunkery Beacon Country House Hotel which is now under the ownership of John and Jane Bradley. This is a new venture for them and they could not have made us feel more welcome. The rooms are warm and comfortable and we had delicious and generous breakfasts before walking out onto the moor. This hotel is great value for money in a spectacular part of the country. We wish them every success and are already looking forward to our next visit.

Thank you very much for your kind comments - John and I are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and were able to do a good walk whilst you were here. There are so many different paths and byways here that you really are spoilt for choice - Exmoor is so accessible, which is wonderful for those of us who are keen to explore.

We hope to see you again next year and do give a wave to my old Grammar school next time you are passing it!

Kindest regards,

Jane

We needed a base for visiting a friend who lives in nearby Minehead and chose this hotel from reviews on TA. It was perfect and we had a really lovely stay last year with the previous, very friendly, owners. So we re-booked for this year and when we got a phone call from the new owners we were a little apprehensive - because it's people who make hotels special. However our fears were groundless and Jane and John, who took over the reins in March, are an exceptional couple for whom no request is too much trouble. They have made a fantastic start and had to hit the ground running with their first guests being a party of 11 (see 'Devonwonderers' review).
Dunkery Beacon Hotel is situated on the edge of Wooten Courtney village and enjoys superb views of Exmoor. Our Room 18 on the 3rd floor was spacious and comfortable. There were a couple of shortcomings (no towel rail over the radiator and no convenient mirror when using the hair dryer) that we mentioned to Jane after breakfast on Saturday and both had been remedied by the time we got back in the evening. If only everywhere you stayed was as quick to fix a problem! Apparently all the rooms have views of Exmoor.
The only comment I had to make about breakfast on the first day was that there was too much of it! All the produce is being locally sourced and we were encouraged to provide feedback as they are still trying out different options.
Plans are in the pipeline for the provision of evening meals which will be a real benefit as it will give more opportunity to chill out in the cosy lounge for pre/post dinner drinks. Plus it avoids the need to negotiate in the dark the rather tricky bit of road up to Wooten Courney and the hotel from the main road.
Would we go back. Most certainly. And based on this experience under the stewardship of John and Jane would recommend the hotel without hesitation because if the plans that they have come to fruition it will only get better.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review and we're so pleased that your second visit here didn't disappoint despite understandable apprehensions to begin with. You'll be pleased to know that we have now fixed a permanent double towel rail to the wall above the radiator and an additional towel hoop near the shower door. Small things, but they make a difference.

The stunning views of Exmoor have not been very apparent over the last day or two - the weather has been pretty awful I'm sorry to say. On the plus side, though, it makes it all the nicer to curl up on the lounge sofa in front of a roaring log fire....ahhh bliss!

We very much hope that you'll be down to stay again in the not too distant future.

Best wishes

Have just returned from my wife's birthday weekend at The Dunkery Beacon. The first thing to say is that the new owners Jane and John could not be more welcoming and helpful. Taking over a B&B must be a daunting task but they seem to be taking it all in their stride and have some fabulous ideas for the future, I wish them every success and can't wait to return to try John's cooking and Jane's wine list in the proposed restaurant.
The location of the hotel is exceptional with fantastic views and walks to be had from the front door. It's also a great base from which to explore Exmoor by car if walking's not your thing. The gorgeous villages and towns of Dulverton and Lynton/Lynmouth are within easy drives through the most stunning scenery. Dunkery Beacon itself is on the doorstep and an absolute must... there's one hell of a view from the top!
As for the room, we were in no. 7 with it's seperate sitting room with TV and sofa etc. It was much larger than I expected and very comfortable with glorious view from every window... couldn't have asked for more. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of options for all tastes. There's also a lovely lounge with a woodburner on the go to sit in and read or simply admire the views. We didn't really use it as we had our own sofa etc in our room but I'm sure it would come in to its own if you were to only book a bedroom.
All in all we had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to return.

Very kind of you to take the time to post such a lovely review Tom. We are delighted you both had such an enjoyable time and managed to do quite a bit of walking and sightseeing whilst here. There really is so much to see and explore, as we're discovering too! Do come back for a second visit if you can as we'd love to see you again - John will work his culinary magic in the kitchen and I'll make sure there's a good bottle of Rioja on the wine list for you!

Best regards,

Jane

We booked Dunkery Beacon months ago when we were looking for a special place to go for my 30th birthday weekend. We saw the great reviews on here and thought it'd be perfect for a bit of walking and relaxing. So we did feel a little uncertain when we found out it had new owners, as that can make a big difference to your experience.

However, we needn't have worried. From the moment we arrived (greeted with John's homemade scones) we found Jane and John friendly and fun and guessed we were going to have a great stay.

The first room we stayed in (No 10) was decorated beautifully, the views over the garden and the Beacon were stunning. We really enjoyed sitting in the bay window and drinking tea after our first day out in Porlock. The second room (No 7) was also very nice with a separate living room to sit and read or watch TV.

The Breakfasts were delicious. It seemed that there was something new to try each day. As well as a full English breakfast (which was available every morning) we also sampled a creamy porridge with a dollop of clotted cream, fresh fruit salad and French toast with crispy bacon. We also sampled a variety of sausage as Jane and John were trying to find the perfect one to serve with breakfast every day... now that's dedication!

We highly recommend a walk from the B and B up to Dunkery Beacon itself. We went on my birthday which was a clear sunny day. We took local fudge and warm Cornish pasties with us and i can genuinely say it was one of the nicest and most well earned meals we had when we reached the top. It was roughly 6 miles there and back but seemed considerably faster coming down :-)

The little extras that made the holiday for us, were brought by Jane and John. They booked tables for us at the local restaurants in Dunster (My husband recommend the Exmoor Gold Ale), they went out especially and bought decaffeinated tea for me, they even left me chocolates and a card in our room for my birthday.

So, Thank you Jane and John for making my 30th birthday weekend extra special! The B and B was great and you really were the difference between having a good weekend and a fantastic one!

Love Jess, Dave and bump!

Room Tip: We loved both rooms we stayed in 7 and 10. However 10's beautiful views, gorgeous décor and seat...

It was a delight to have you both to stay and we really hope that you'll be tempted back sometime. After all it'll give Dave the opportunity to buy you some more nicknackery in Dunster!

A group of 11 of us stayed with John and Jane on their first weekend since taking over the Dunkery Beacon. Our room was wonderful with fabulous panoramic views of Dunkery Beacon, and the food and service we received was excellent. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and I am sure that John and Jane will make a great success of the Dunkery Beacon. I would not hesitate in recommending a stay at this lovely Hotel. We will be back!

Room Tip: Room 10 has a 4 poster bed and a bay window seating area with fabulous, panoramic views of Dunkery B...

I had a fabulous weekend away with friends at this hotel. John and Jane were extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel was very clean and perfect for what we wanted. I especially want to mention how easily they coped with my requirement for a gluten free diet. They knew exactly what was involved and made sure I was looked after without having to ask. I recommend this hotel unreservedly.

John & I are so glad that you enjoyed your stay and it was a pleasure meeting you. We do hope you visit again, although we can't necessarily guarantee the same glorious weather....but let's hope there is more to come!
