Cafe Lava Hostel

Booked for Bromo Permai but got transferred to Cafe Lava Hostel due to overbooking. Since they have no smaller rooms left, they got us a family room! No extra charges. I felt that it was a blessing in disguise coz everything fell into place. In fact my friend and I got more than what we wanted throughout our stay here. Many thanks to our guide! He made our stay here the most memorable one yet.

Ok. Service was fast. Clean rooms. Thick blankets. Working water heater. There's TV. There's kettle. No safe box.
Breakfast is from 7am-10am. We're not choosy with food. As long as there is something to fill our tummies, we're good. There's fried rice/noodles. Egg. Fruits. Cold/Hot drinks. Basically, that's just it.
There are some other food places along the hostel. Food/beverages cost about (SGD) $1-$5?

If you're planning to catch the sunrise from Mt. Penanjakan and hiking up, I suggest you hire a guide. We got up as early as 3am and hiked up (+/- 2 hours). Bring a torchlight. If you're not catching the sunrise, don't bother hiring one but get a route map.

We were very very very pleased with our guide, who willingly brought us around even during his free time. This also means that we had the best spots, best timings for the activities and even a morning stroll down the plantation area before breakfast! We hardly see any other travelers around there. We felt pure sincerity coming from all the things he did for us. We really had a splendid time, honestly from the bottom of our hearts. We wouldn't mind coming back. :')

I stayed in this hostel two nights - first one in the standard room (350 000) and the second in economical one (150 000). The standard room was really nice, clean, with a bathroom and breakfast included. The economical was teeny tiny with one double bed and a shared bathroom. Both were ok, overpriced as for their standard and similar accomodation in Indonesia, but I understand that given the proximity of Bromo and not many competitors this is normal. Location - on the way to the Bromo and also quite close to the departing point to the viewpoint Penanjakan.

Normally I would rate this place as "very good", but given not very good experience with the Staff of Cafe Lava Hostel, I will decrease my rating to "average".

I was there with a friend, We showed up in the hotel relatively early (before noon) and we asked for an economical room. We were informed that all the rooms are fully booked and there was just one remaining standard room for 350 000. Ok, we decided to take it and we were quite satisfied (though we were aiming for the cheaper room). In the afternoon we met other travellers, whom we already knew from previous places. They came much later than us, they did not do any booking, but they managed to get the ecomical rooms... To me it seemed that the hotel is first selling the more expensive rooms, and only after the cheaper ones - so be aware of that and make sure while taking a room.

We wanted to go to the Penjakan Viewpoint by jeep, but we would need to take the entire jeep only for the two of us - so we decided to climb on our own. The guy working in the hotel claimed that it is impossible to climb it without a guide and insisted that we take one. We decided not to, and wanted to climb it on our own. We asked for directions. The guy told us: "on the way turn left" - and that was it. We did not want the entire road to be described, but just the general information: "after left turn right, and there after the first viewpoint there will be a hidden path". Luckily we managed to find our way and reach the Penanjakan viewpoint on our own and in time, but we did not receive any help from the hostel, because we did not take the guide.

Last day, we were a group of eight travellers and we wanted to go down to Probolingo. Most of us headed to Ijen after. We were informed by the Staff that it's very difficult to reach the Ijen and they insisted that we buy the tour from tchem, but we wanted to do it independently. So early in the morning we asked the hotel to find us some transport to Probolingo. They did not and they claimed they did not know anyone who would like to drive us. In the end some people working in the shop nearby organized a car for us. C'mon, it's ridiculous that they did not know any driver - of course they know everyone in this village and for us it was obvious that they did not help us, because we did not buy a tour from them.

I saw some comments that the saff is very friendly and helpful - yes, they are, once you organize things with them and buy their services. If you are an independent traveller, ou will not receive any help and will listen to plenty of lies ("impossible"). I understand that this is how business works, but we really spent a lot of money there (for rooms, food and beverages), and we just wanted to be independent.

-It's very close from Bromo itself, it's in the peak village of Cemoro Lawang
-Rooms are clean, nice hot water, AC not important cause it's cold at night
-Food is nice and clean in the restaurant
-The staff are really friendly

I would definitely come back here and I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Bromo!

Paid 150 000 rupees for the economy room - very basic, just a double bed and shared bathroom. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. It was the cheapest accommodation we could find, and very convenient as it is almost the highest up accommodation available. This suited us as we wanted to hike to see the sunrise.

Was expecting worse from the reviews and was pleasantly surprised.

Paid 40 000 for buffet breakfast which was egg, toast, jam, fried rice, noodles, fruit and tea and coffee. A little overpriced but given the area (close to mt bromo!) it was understandable.

Wifi available in restaurant and didn't reach our room.

Shower was hot with good pressure.

Overall very good experience.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before you book it, so you can make changes or complaints before it's too la...

Disgusting!
Accommodation, rooms - claims too much no, the price is very much overstated. Breakfast is below average .
1) We booked a transfer through ritsepshin hostel. We were promised a comfortable air-conditioned bus , only tourist , ferry and arrive in Denpasar after 10 hours. As a result , we are descended from the village to Probbolingo planted in a good public bus , we drove 30 km . and in a city we have replaced the local bus , dirty , no air conditioning and where everyone was smoking on the bus , the stops were near each post ! We drove instead of the promised 10 hours - 29 hours . It was hell .
2) through the hostel , we took a motorcycle for rent - paid for 2 days , but the next day at 12 o'clock came and demanded the owner motorcycle return it was a scandal . It turns out the bike was worth 150,000 for 6 hours, and 300,000 we paid for 12 hours to it we stood under the door at night. Although agreed on 2 days for the duration of our stay.

We had a standard room at 350000 (low season price which doubles for high!!). Room and sheets were damp and bathroom did not seem very clean. We were glad we brought our own sleeping bags... location is good for bromo trips and the food in their cafe was good (esp breakfast).

I would definitely recommend the cafe lava hostel as your basis for visiting Bromo. We stayed there for 3 nights, had a standard room of average size with warm water, a comfortable bed and great breakfast options. The room does get chilly at night, but that is normal given the surroundings. The edge of the big crater (Bromo is located inside this) is a short walk away.
Instead of getting into a cramped jeep (which is bookable through the hostel), we drove through the crater and up the mountain for sunrise with 2 scooters. This can be fairly easily done in the wet season, as the 'sea of sand' becomes fairly hard because of rainfall. It is a bit of a tricky drive in pitch black conditions, but as long as you follow the lights of all the jeeps going up...no problem! We rented the scooters in Malang and drove to the hostel by ourselves along the northern route. A faster way would be by approaching Bromo from the west, through the savanna. This is also possible in the rainy season by motorbike/scooter.
