“the 'sail' is sailing higher”

For the language challenged, vela means 'sail' in Italian. This place at the beginning of the walk along the waterfront to the Marina and beyond, is where you go to find a little snack which can evolve into a very pleasant meal. A prosecco, chips, olives, various crunchy-crackertypes. Then a choice of pasta dishes, followed by a fishy something all well prepared. Dessert this time was an extremely fulfilling apple strudel with ice cream. Service is always friendly and quick. My outdoor table has been in the corner protected by the glass windbreaker, on the outside row of tables facing a spectacular view across Lago Maggiore watching the traghetti come and go between Laveno and Intra, or the sails of boats leaning one way or the other in the distance. A good place to spend also alone reading if you want, and have your needs met as time just passes.

My husband and I and our little dog went to Laveno to see the Christmas lights and arrived in the late afternoon so decided to have some wine and relax by the lake front. We chose this venue for the location. We ordered a bottle of white wine to split as we had about an hour and a half to wait until sunset. We just wanted to relax and take some photos. The wine was good but the nibbles were outstanding. We were brought a tray of chips, crostini, olives and another type of bread. A few minutes later a plate of toasted ham and cheese sandwiches arrived. Who needs dinner? The bill was 23 Euros which I thought was quite good for all that we were served. We would certainly go back. And by the way the Christmas lights around the lake front were beautiful and well worth having look. There is even an underwater lighted nativity scene.

You've had a hard day. You need to relax a little. Take an "aperativo", looking over Lake Maggiore. Well look no further - it's got to be the Bar Vela. Best gin and tonic in the region, with one of the best views over the lake, supported by a range of little bits of food - pizza, olives, crisps - supported by great service. Wonderful.

If you can make it through a heavy session of aperitivi (they know how to make a great negroni here, and the cocktail list is pretty good), with slices of margarita pizza, olives etc, then staying for dinner is definitely an option. Usually a fairly small menu, with some interesting pizzas and good fish dishes and salads. Relaxed, casual dining with a great view of the lake. Recommended.
