After 30 years, returning here was as wonderful as it was the first time! The arrival from Sala Comacina (one takes a small boat, 5 minutes) is stunning. Walking up to the restaurant beautiful. Then the menu, which hasn't changed much over the years, is one divine thing after another, with as much wine as you would like. The winner might have been the salmon trout, but everything else was simply special and divine. One of the truly unforgettable dining experiences of my life!

We happened upon the island by mistake and due to an out of date ferry schedule but luckily had read about it when researching the Lake so sort of new what we were getting into, with regards to the restaurant at least.

As you will no doubt have seen from other reviews there is a limited choice of menu but a number of courses to delight you. We arrived at lunch time and chose the 'light menu' this was 42 Euro each, or slightly more with wine. The standard 6 course menu is 62 euro each and the menu said no credit cards so take enough money.

Our first dish was half a tomato with a slice of lemon on top, which, sounds strange and basic but the food is very different and this dish was surprisingly tasty. This was followed with a whole warm baguette placed on the table as we were told to break it with our hands. Then came dish after dish, like our very own cold buffet, beetroot, carrots, artichoke, butter beans, baked onion (a real favourite with us!), boiled cabbage roasted Ham, cured beef, there is certainly a lot to eat.

This was followed by a slab of Parmagiano cheese, served from a huge cheese “basin”, then pudding was ice cream and blueberries. Next, the owner
Benvenuto Puricelli, performs a ceremony called ‘the exorcism of fire", and tells us of the history and curses of the island, before serving sweetened black coffee by burning brandy in his pot.

You need to leave at least 1-2 hours to eat here, and have a good appetitte, especially for the 6 course menu which includes a shortened version of our light menu, salmon, fried chicken and more.

Following lunch we walked around the island, this cost 6 euro per person but to be honest there is not a lot to see, there are some nice views, a church, ruins and some artist retreats and this will take about 30-40 minutes. There is also a small pebble beach if you would like to sit by the lake there.

If you dont fancy the restaurant, there is also a snack and drinks bar on the island with a good deal of outdoor and shaded seating.

Once is enough, kind of like going to the top of the Empire State Building. That being said, the process of getting their had a romance to it, but the captain of the little boat killed that right away as he was all business. The setting was lovely and the food was good. We were first to be seated and the restaurant was empty. That soon changed within minutes as other couples and a tour group arrived. We were first to be served and as our courses were changed in good time at the beginning, we began to sit with our finished plates in front of us for longer and longer. We realized that the kitchen was getting everyone onto the same course toward the end. Therefore, first in; last out. It was a 3-1/2 h lunch, but the couple next to us was seated for half that time with both of us receiving the same exact meal. The goal is to have everyone done with their food so the maitre'd and owner, Benvenuto could give a very long speech in italian only and start his coffee on fire and serve it. We were not fans. We felt we were held captive. If there was a large group of friends traveling together who could afford a eu 70 per person meal and boat ride charge, it would be an enjoyable event. Not sure what happens to those unsuspecting travelers who don't check ahead about credit cards vs. cash as they only take cash. After all you are on an island? Just saying.

Food is AMAZING. I am a huge foodie and the restaurant here is by far the best. The entire experience was fun. Getting there by boat, hearing the story of the island, walking around, etc. But, the best part? THE FOOD. Excellent. Fresh. Simple. No menu... they just bring what they know best. Would HIGHLY recommend!

The Island is beautiful and the restaurant is an institution. The food was delicious, simple and plentiful. The staff is very efficient and friendly. This a wonderful tradition - it is not just a meal but an overall experience that should not be missed! Savor it slowly and know that it takes a few hours so do not be a rush to get to something else. HIghly recommended.
