“Italy's best kept secret”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2006

Four nights mid-October in this wonderful little hotel were an absolute highlight of our five weeks in Europe. As a party of six (three couples), we deliberately stayed away from "5 Stars" to experience a more authentic piece of Italian lifestyle and cuisine. We were not disappointed. The rooms were simple but comfortable and very clean. The staff could not have been more helpful and Marguerita is a superstar. She speaks four languages and nothing is too much trouble for any guest. Stefano is a great chef (as well as being a world champion water-skier!) and the menu at the attached restaurant is varied enough to be able to enjoy eating there exclusively for a week. The views in the area over and around the lake are breathtaking. We walked the 6km to Bellagio which was a bit hairy at times but worth the effort in terms of what you get to see. Driving on these roads is not for the faint-hearted but it all added to the experience of a part of our holiday that we will talk about for many years. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Hotel Aurora for one night on 29th September. The hotel is situated on Lake Como not far from Bellagio but the drive is quite hair-raising to say the least! Our room was lovely, unfortunately we weren't over looking the lake but it was very clean and fresh. The staff were very friendly and helpful and gave us suggestions of what to do for the day. We ate dinner in the restaurant and the foods was lovely - my boyfriend will definitely recommend the mixed grill! The breakfast was the best we had all holiday, with lovely warm chocolate pastries and ham, bread etc.

There isn't anything else to see in Lezzeno but it is a good loaction to explore Lake Como. We drove to Como itself and we had a few near misses on the way so I would not recommend this location for nervous drivers!

I would definitely recommend this hotel for the beautiful location, wonderful food and delightful staff.

Went in September after the crowds were down. Room was very basic, but mostly sufficient. This is not an upscale hotel. We were on the front of the hotel and the road noise was bothersome, so I would ask for a back room. Margerithe (sp?) was a terrific hostess and her restaurant, right across the street on the lake, was very good. She holds lakeside tables for her guests and she gives you enough information upon checkin that you feel as though she really does care and will help your stay be a good one. Do travel on the lake ferry boats. After you figure out the simple schedule sheet she provides, they are great for cruising the lake and stopping where you want. Spent an hour in Bellagio and the rest of the two days touring the rest of the lake by ferry.

  • Liked — the hostess/owner, Margerithe
  • Disliked — road noise into the room at night

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at the Hotel Aurora in Lezzano, and we loved every minute of it! The service was fantastic, Margerita and her family went out of their way to ensure that we had a great stay, even providing us with a ride to Bellagio and assisting us with finding a hotel in Verona (our next stop). Access to Lezzano and Bellagio via Como is quite easy using the buses provided.

We have travelled all over Italy, and found that the food at the hotel's restaurant was among the best we have had. Try the Cotelleta, it is the best. Their selection of breakfast items was very impressive, much more than you would find in the larger cities.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a peaceful getaway.

We started our northern and central Italian holiday by landing in Milan airport (Malpensa) bu not with my honey's luggage. Oh well! We picked up the rental car and were off to Lake Como.

Getting there:
Be prepared to drive about one hour on the highway and then about 3 hours through notoriously busy, narrow and winding roads on the cliffs of the Como lake mountains... Not a restful drive. We recommend the train to COMO town and then there are slow or fast ferries that stop at all of the lakeside towns. Much better and very scenic. The Lezzano ferry stop is only 10 minutes walk to the hotel.

The Hotel:
OK, Hotel or Auberge or Albergo Aurora. We think it is even better than staying in Bellagio. Bellagio is too busy and noisy as well as quite expensive for what we think is no real added value. The 12 rooms at Aurora are renovated and have all the modern amenities. Standard size rooms for Europe but perfectly comfortable, clean and modern. We were surprised how nice! By the way, I believe they also own a few apartments in the Lezzano village where the hotel is.... you may want to ask if you plan on staying for a longer stay.

We absolutely loved the owners that are truly friendly and helpful, and of course the lake side terrace where you will find good food including nice lake fish and full bar service .

Booking:
I recommend booking early, this place is great and only has a few rooms. I booked about 8 to 10 weeks prior and was lucky to get a room, mountainview of course. The lakeview rooms seems to be a little bigger but I am not sure. The peak I got from the hallway made me want to come back and book early!
We recommend spending a few days here for sure. We did it directly though there website [--] (e-mail).

Swimming and sports:
From the large covered terrace that has the best view in the area, you can go down the steps to the wooden docks that have a lovely area with beach chairs and umbrellas. We definetly enjoyed jumping in the crystal clean water and take in some sun (hot in July!). The dock is shared with the Jolly Racing club. You can take a class or simply enjoy the water sport of your choice. BTW, the ski school is run by the trainer of the italian national team (wake board and water skiing) and they are great with kids from what we saw.

Breakfast:
In the good size dinning room, breakfasts are plentiful and good and we saw their internet acces point in the lounging corner of the dinning room. If I remember well, we paid 85 euros a night for a mountain view room including the copious breakfast. What a deal!

Bellagio:
The hotel is 6KM from Bellagio where there are some good restaurants and fine boutiques. We liked it for nightly dinning.
Daytime we enjoyed the lakefront swimming and sunning at the hotel, spent one afteroon in Bellagio but preffered the day when we took the slow (scenic) ferry to Como.

COMO
There we shopped in a nice and vast selection of boutiques and passed siesta time at a cafe snacking and drinking cafes until the boutiques reopen ( around 3:3O to 4PM)and took the fast ferry back in time for a shower, nap and dinner on the lake.
.
Note: my honey got his luggae delivered to the hotel just about
2 days later!

  • Liked — The combination scenery, water access, value and personal attention
  • Disliked — windy narrow roads but I guess that is also the charm of the area!

I agree with all the positive reviews here but found it a little disconcerting having to drag my luggage along the road from the ferry stop. There is no pedestrian strip and numerous trucks and cars whiz by and fail to slow down for the blind bends. They instead screech their horns as they enter the curve expecting the pedestrians & oncoming traffic get out of their way. It is scary the first time but was easier when leaving since I knew what to expect. Do not arrive in the dark on the ferry.

Also expect to hire taxi boats for about €10 per person because the ferry less frequently stops at this location - for further information go to www.navigazionelaghi.it for seasonal ferry timetable.

I don't wish to put anyone off staying here because Lezzeno has more charm than Bellagio and the town's restaurant serves yummy vegetarian food. Definitley indulge in the Carciofi alla Romana antipasta.

  • Liked — View, location
  • Disliked — transport & traffic
  • Tips/Secrets — There is only one restaurant, bar, local shop etc expect to slow down without usual conveniances

My family and I have just returned from Italy, and our first night was at the Aurora, and it was just a wonderful stay. The setting for the hotel is against the beautiful backdrop of the Como mountainsides. As we drove up, we could see the lakeside area with the trampoline and the kayaks, and the kids were won over on the spot!
We dined in the very reasonably priced restaurant on the veranda, and followed some other advice from the website and tried the homemade ravioli, which was absolutely delicious.
The rooms were clean and neat, and the fan system very adequate to keep the room cool without the need for air conditioning. The staff were all very friendly, especially Margherita who is clearly well-loved by all the guests, many of whom come back year after year.
The next day was spent on the beach are in front of the hotel, and there was plenty to keep everyone occupied - we introduced the chilldren to water-skiing (also very fairly priced), and the coaching was so well done that they got up above the water in no time and enjoyed it enormously!
We recommend this hotel unreservedly, and advise that you book early if you want to stay during the summer months, as we were lucky even to get the one night there. So glad that we did...
