This is a beautiful attraction and well worth a visit if you are in or around Lake Como. It is not particularly expensive (only around €2-3 sorry I can't remember exactly) and you also get a nice view over the lake at the top. It is sadly rather small and takes little over 20 minutes to exhaust all possibilities; do not be deterred though as it is one of the most beautiful attractions that isn't a villa by the lake. Make sure you bring your camera with you!

The falls are just that. Falls. We wanted to possible swim in them but it's not possible. We travelled from Varenna via ferry to Bellano and walked the few hundred meters to the falls. We paid €3 entry fee per adult to the very pleasant chap manning the booth at the front. Then walked up the falls. Which seem to be part of an old pumping station or hydro electric station? The walk through the cave/cliff are beautiful but only lasts a few minutes with the falls coming to an abrupt stop with no entry signs. Beautiful and possibly worth the trip if you are passing through. But don't expect a lovely secluded dip. The falls themselves are beautiful though and the rock pools are very tempting...

We were unsure of whether to visit this gorge or not after reading reviews. In the end we went for it. We are so glad that we did. I can understand that it would probably be very underwhelming if it was the middle of a heatwave. However, we visited it on a day where it had been raining pretty much non stop for 24 hrs plus a lot of rain in the weeks leading up to it. The gorge was flowing powerfully and very noisily!! It was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon on lake como. It looked amazing in these weather conditions. 3 euros entrance for a short walk over the gorge.

Getting there:

We caught the train to Bellano. When you come out of the train station on the platform 1 side turn right. A little further down that road you will begin to see signs for the Orrido (Gorge). Follow them! Only takes a 5 minute walk.

Heard about the gorge from someone who had visited recently. Followed the brown tourist road signs and parked in the piazza next to the church. The entrance is somewhat strange but the actual gorge is amazing seeing how the power of water had cut out the chasm. But also look at the rock faces to see how man has cut out for sluices and walkways so as to harness the power of the water. In all it can make for an interesting experience, and a refreshing break on a hot day.

This doesn't look very promising from the outside area but is surprisingly interesting and beautiful. It is small and will only take you half an hour or so, but only costs 3 euro per adult and less for children.
It was not crowded at all, which helped. This is possibly because there aren't many ferries to Bellano each day. We got there on the train from Varenna , which is only a 5 minute journey.
