During a recent visit to Lago di Orta we did some exploring around Lago Maggiore, the neighboring, larger and more bustling 'in' lake. We very much enjoyed the scenery on both the Swiss & Italian sides--especially the lake views, the grand turn-of-the century villas and their gardens. On our return drive to our hotel (not all too far from Stresa) tucked in between the rather unkempt houses and sadly decaying mansions/villas along the main road on this part of Maggiore we spotted a very modern and inviting shop standing very much alone and out-of-place: Herno! And not just any Herno shop: it was the outlet! It was fantastic! (Herno is known for chic designs of outerwear using an ultra-light down. The stems of the down feathers have been removed, leaving only the fluffy warm part. Because of this, the jackets and coats are extremely comfortable to wear and can be scrunched into a neat, packable ball for travel. Many clothing companies have recently adopted this technique and offer similar garments, but by far not in the numerous creative styles and fabrics that Herno produces.) The racks in the store were brimming with every type of style jacket for both men & women. Most of the styles were offered in every size (complete collections) and the prices were atleast half of what one would pay in Germany. Some of the items we purchased had been reduced again making our savings even more significant. In the end, we paid about a third of the regular price for first quality garments from the previous season. In addition to the outerwear, there was a selection of pants and blouses for ladies and trousers and shirts for men. If you are in the market for top quality, stylish outerwear at fantastic prices, I can highly recommend this 'off-the-beaten-path' gem of an outlet.
