“A lovely stay full of culture and Italian style”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2012

My wife and I travelled to the Italian lakes in June 2012 and Casabella was our first stop during our 10 days holidays trip. The main reason for us to book at Enrico’s B&B was due to its interest to architecture and it does reflect very well in the refurbishment of the this 1900’s house. The villa is very typical of the type of villa would dream to own close the lakes and this one was refurbished to a very high standard.

We booked our room directly via email and Enrico is very good at replying quickly, straight away we felt very comfortable with the whole process which is something very important to us. We like spending time with the locals and that is the reason for us to generally look for the smaller hotels and/or B&B.

We drove to Lesa from Milan Malpensa and it too us about 1 hour and a bit, we decided not to use the motorways. Overall it is relatively easy to find the B&B and it is even easier to park in one of the streets around. Do not worry too much, there is not so much traffic so the car is safe! Also walking down the street, you can have an easy access to a public beach, which is really nice and feels like it is only used by locals (5 minutes’ walk).

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Enrico, who helped us to carry our suitcases upstairs directly to the room. The room itself was great! Really well designed to a very high standard and very different to some of the more mainstream hotels: this B&B has style! We even had two bathrooms, one for my wife and one for me! How cool is that? Also you will find all you need there, a fridge you keep you water cool at night, fresh towels, shower gel in case you did not bring some with you and a coffee machine in the corner of the room. Please note that the B&B does not have air conditioning but we travelled there in June during the heat wave and it does get cooler at night if you leave the windows open.

The breakfast was served on the terrace in the morning and we enjoyed nice cakes, juices, lovely Italian coffee, fresh cheeses, homemade jam and bread etc… make sure you try the ricotta with honey; it is really nice and very refreshing in the morning. I was really surprised with the choice of music too… Enrico has a very good interest in jazz and during our conversation he told me about the jazz festival which occurs every year in Stresa! I even had the chance to listen to one of my favourite guitar player during the breakfast which was a nice surprise!

Enrico will help you to find the best places to eat, and will also tell you what to visit (depending on how long you staying of course). One of the surprises was that Alessi (the Italian design company) has an outlet near the Lago di Orta, which is about 45 minutes driving from Lesa. Enrico pointed us to the right place on a map and he knows a lot about the outlet since he has few pieces from Alessi on show in his kitchen… We loved the shop so much we went there twice! On our way we stopped also in Orta which was recommended by Enrico. It was indeed very good and I have heard since from friends that it is worth to go across the lake by boat and visit San Giulio. Probably another time!

Anyway, all in all a wonderful stay in Lago Maggiore, we for sure we will go there again when we decide to go to the Stresa Jazz festival! Book away with your eyes close and enjoy the stay in B&B Casabella!

The attached picture as: drawing by enrico (title "climb up to Ghisallo", signed 1934) is not mine, but by my uncle Enrico Mercatali (the name is the same), dead in 1942, that was a very well known advertising graphic designer in that period, all over Europe. The drawing is a part of a personal collection of his work.

We enjoyed staying at Casabella for a few days, Enrico is very helpful and provides a delicious breakfast, beautifully laid out with tables on the terrace with music playing in the background. Superb!

Room Tip: First floor rooms with balcony are good

My wife and I stayed here on June 6 and 7. We really enjoyed the house and Enrico, the host. Our room was very comfortable, and breakfast was great. We would have stayed longer if we could. We couldn't recommend it more enthusiastically.

We have just returned from a stay at Casabella. It could not have been better. We loved it and it was very centrally located. Enrico was so helpful--in "talking" us to his place when we got lost, to directing us with maps, etc. to where we wanted to go, etc. The room (1st floor) was most comfortable, very clean and the bath was beautiful. What delicious breakfasts they served---hard boiled eggs, cereal, cheeses, bread, pastries. We highly recommend it!!

We spent 7 nights at Casabella, it has been a great experience! Everything has been perfect.
We had the two rooms on the first floor; both are very nicely decorated, with a lot of attention to detail, like a nice desk in one room, contemporary bathrooms, original floor in one bathroom, etc. The mattresses are excellent, I have back problems and slept very well. Also the bed linen is great, with additional blankets as required. I stay a lot in hotels and usually do not sleep well the first night, but in Casabella from the first to the last night I slept very well. The rooms have each a balcony overlooking the garden, which is very pleasant especially in the morning, when you can enjoy the first rays of sunshine on them. There is another balcony facing west, meaning it is very pleasant to use it in the evening if you decide to stay in.
The location of Casabella is great too. There are several good restaurants close by, from Lesa it is only a short trip to the most interesting sites at the Lago Maggiore and beyond.
But most of all, this is such a great place because of Enrico and Flavia. They were always very helpful, provided great suggestions for trips and prepared an amazing breakfast with everything you could think of, and more! Enrico prepared every day different cheeses with honey, or pepper and olive oil, or tomatoes and basil, etc. Not to mention the eggs he prepared, the home made cakes, jam, different good music every day, and the list goes on, for you to discover!

We can highly recommend Casabella. We initially planned to stay there for two nights, but then liked it so much that we stayed for four nights in total. Luckily, it was possible. It is a beautifully designed house and our room was very clean and stylish, with a lot of light and a balcony. Enrico, the owner and architect of the house, is a very care-taking host who makes you feel welcome and at home. Every morning, he prepared a delicious breakfast for us in the garden. It was the best breakfast we ever had in a bed&breakfast or hotel. We could have sat there for hours. He pays attention to little details which makes your stay a great experience. He also gave us great advice on places to visit in the area and good restaurants. Location of Casabella is really good for daily excursions around the Lake or to Milano. We enjoyed our stay very much and will definitely come back for another relaxing holiday in a beautiful and quite surrounding, with a remarkable host.

We stayed at Casbella for 2 nights in October -it was great.
the remarkable well-designed B&B was extraordinary, and on top of that -the wonderful hospitality of Enrico and family.
Breakfast was a gourmet, all served in beautiful dishes with great taste.
The rooms were well equiped-we took 2 rooms-one downstairs and one upstairs (5 adults+1 todler+1 kid).the rooms are big and comfortable and very clean.the big advantage is that it is very close to the town center-1 minute drive.
Wonderful ending to a great holiday.
