Many good reviews are available on this hotel so we will just add our pennies worth of personal comments.
We prefer large rooms, so nothing smaller than the 'Junior Suite' at this hotel is of interest to us. Apart from the 'Suites' (single room suites) there are no large rooms at this hotel. The rooms have sparse interior decorations and do not invite you to stay there longer than needed.

Breakfast is included. During the busy season the breakfast room is overloaded (reservation is recommended). The staff tries their best but that is sometimes not enough.
We do not agree with other reviewers that the breakfast is especially good. It is OK only.
There are e.g. no fresh juices available at all. A freshly squeezed orange juice should be added, at least to the menu of items that can be purchased!
The location in the main restaurant is however very nice as you can overlook the lake and the ferry landing station. That is likely why many reviewers like it.

The bar is too small and at times (evenings) people cannot find a place to sit. Meanwhile there is a large lounge area nearby that is largely unused. The open rosé wine (one choice) is poor.

Internet (free) works well.

The restaurant: Has a set menu and 'a la carte'. The latter is usually OK unless you stay a longer period. Then you should stroll around to explore the not too many options in the village. The restaurant has a bit tight opening hours 19:00-21:15. Some evenings the staff starts rolling out the following day's breakfast items, which is pretty disturbing.
The wine list is a bit disappointing and needs improvement. It is not very large and there are few options in the intermediate price range, say 30 +/-5 Euro. Of course there are very few non-Italian wines, but the Italian selection likely could be doubled.

The pool area is quite nice given the little space available and there is plenty space for tanning. The hotel should ban the annoying claim of the sun chairs which is as always done by guests of the usual nationality.

Despite the above mentioned shortcomings, what makes the hotel unique is its location by the waterfront just by the landing and the otherwise beautiful setting. Also the systematic concept of having a soft, quiet (no disturbing 'elevator' music) and relaxed atmosphere where you can sit down and have something to eat or drink from morning to evening is just great. Service is quite prompt and if you chose to, you will never be bothered with money or credit cards until you check out. The entire operation is built on trust.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the back side of the hotel are pretty dismal.

This was our fifth visit to this delightful hotel. We were welcomed by the family, the staff and by other guests whom we had met before. We book the same room every year and it has the miost beautiful views of Lake Maggiore.

This year I had deliberately booked over the full moon period so that we could have views of the moon rising on the other side of the lake and casting this silver sparkle across the water. Absolutely gorgeous!

The hotel is spotlessly clean and the food very good. I have special consideration as a vegetarian and this year we spent every meal but one on the veranda. That was probably my one complaint - that the weather was too hot! But we had glorious sunshine every day and just a thunderstorm one night.

Can't wait to get back to this lovely place and its super family and staff. They are all delightful from the Signora who is very much in charge, down to little Lucia, a new addition to the family, and born in July. Love it, Love it, love them all.

Room Tip: A lake view is excellent.

We kicked off our 2011 Italy vacation with 4 days at Hotel Cannero in early May. Simply put, WOW! We had a wonderful stay at the hotel due mainly to the very attentive and gracious staff.
The room was really nice with a small balcony looking out over Lake Maggiore. It was so fantatstic to begin and end each day by looking out over the lake.
The staff was very helpful in giving us directions, information, and helping us plan our days.
Every afternoon from 5-6 they had a complimentary wine tasting in their cellar, and the selections were really good.
The food and dining experience at the hotel was very elegant and "old world." A wide selection allowed us to pick and choose what we had for dinner and all of it was well prepared and served, as I said, elegantly.
We took the Lake Maggiore Express trip beginning at the dock in front of the hotel.
We truly enjoyed our stay at the hotel and also the town. The promendade along the waterfront was very nice to stroll down after dinner and enjoy the lights on the lake.
We will be returning to Hotel Cannero in 2013 and can't wait to get there.

Just back from Sun drenched Lake Maggiore.Had an excellent stay. The hotel staff were always very attentive and the food was very good - always served by very jovial waiters who really enjoyed their work.
We arrived there by private transfer from Malpensa - a good experience especially if you don't fancy driving the italian way. The superior room was on lakeside (room 104) and benefited from a large terrace as it was on the first floor. Enough room for two chairs , a table and two reclining deck chairs complete with sun brolly. There were also two huge lime trees in rather large pots too. Downside to all this was we were looking right into the ferry ticket office.
Some of the rooms either side of us had a smaller balcony, and they did look crammed compared to ours .
Being so close to Switzerland is also a good thing as we were there 20 years ago. We thought it would be good to check up on Locarno which is a the top of the lake. The local bus service which runs along the top of the main road takes you to Brissago for a few euros return - 8 I think. The remaining short journey had to be made in a Swiss bus and cost 18 swiss francs return ! - for about a third of the journey, - and I thought the Euro was ripping us off. The hotel looks lovely at night and once the last ferry comes in after 7 pm - the lake settles down to a quiet ripple on the side of the wall. The first ferry arrives at 7.35 am but I was always up before that. All in all - a very relaxing holiday with good food and very good owners who mingled with the staff to see everything was just right

Room Tip: No shower screen or curtain over bath - but some rooms only had showers.

Renovations were in progress, but one could not tell...
The staff was exceptionally gracious and attentive...Having a disability, walking with assistance of a cane...the staff accommodated my wife and I on our honeymoon with great attention...
They made us fee feel part of the family and Italy...
Our room, room 156, was a splendor of the olde ages...
The hotel staff did a great job mixing olde and new architecture giving one a variety to choose from when selecting what part of the Hotel and what room to stay in...
We highly recommend Hotel Cannero and its staff to any age group when exploring Italy.

I stayed here with my husband for our wedding anniversary in Room 215 we'd booked a lake view with balcony room so we could sit out and enjoy the view however we couldn't as there were birds nesting in the balcony above and our balcony was covered in bird poo and they were quite an annoyance, even more so for me as I have a fear of birds so I found it quite distressing. We did mention it as it was only on our balcony they were nesting but the reply was that yes they have birds and they do not move them. I did feel this was a little rude, I am of reasonable intelligence and am aware of birds and nesting but as we had paid extra for the room and due to my fear it would have been nice to have been offered for us to be moved as we could not use and enjoy the balcony due to the excrement.
However other than this the hotel itself is lovely, and the staff (especially the restaurant staff) are really nice, helpful and friendly. The pool is good, and the sun terrace is a nice quiet area to sunbathe.
The resort itself is very quiet and relaxing, I had been informed they are no ferries on Wednesdays but found out this is not strictly true, there are ferries to Luino for the market though they are very busy and because I was unaware of them until the morning we didn't use them.
I would recommend this hotel and resort to friends looking for a quiet relaxing break, the food in the hotel was delicious I would say not typically italian but for a foodie like myself it was fabulous.

Whilst the hotel was excellent and the staff really helpful our stay was marred by the poor food on offer on the half board plan. Not sure we ever had anything that was traditionally Italian! We would recommend booking bed and breakfast only and eating at the excellent restaurant next door to the hotel.
