A truly delightful hotel. At the very edge of Garda. A rare thing - it has character. Delightful restaurant looking out on the lake. Food first rate. Best breakfast service we experienced in Italy. Staff very friendly and helpful. The manager drove us at the end of our stay to the quay for our boat. Also Gargnano if much more of a 'real' place than others on Lake Garda.
One word for Hotel du Lac - Charming.

This hotel is beautifully located on the lake front in the village of Villa, just about 1KM (easy stroll) from the pretty town of Gargnano. The location itself is wonderful and one gets to sample a little bit of Italian Village life as you pass neighbours talking to each other and going about their daily routines. After visiting places like Limone Sul Garda and Sirmione, it is a pleasure to come back to Gargnano which, although attracts tourists (the books say it is the prettiest village on the lake) doesn't have the hoards of them unlike other places around the lake. The food is good and there is a lovely little bar on the waterfront where one can sit back and enjoy the sunset with a prossecco.

The hotel is clean, friendly and one very much gets the impression that it is personal service that they provide. We had a room on the 3rd floor with a lovely view of the lake and the sound of the tide - it's really worth it! As we stayed 6 nights, we went half board for 3 of them and the food and service were very good. The food is well prepared in a nice atmosphere (although perhaps a little stuffy) and the service was great. The chap who runs reception and his mother are both delightful and one really gets the feel of personal care, which is a treasure compared to larger and more informal corporate hotel experiences.

The rooms are large and airy. They have some interesting antique furniture (the bed, wardrobe etc) and are furnished pleasantly. I guess the bathroom is a little out of date, but clean and with all necessary amenities, nonetheless. However, one doesn't come to lake Garda to sit in a room, right?!

All in all, a lovely stay. Places definitely to visit: Torri Del Benaco (in my opinion one of the loveliest), Salo (really pretty with some nice places to eat) and Sirmione (careful of a very expensive "tratorria" - lovely view, but it literally comes at a price!) Although undoubtedly Limone and Malcesine are pretty, they are completely overrun and one feels like its rush hour in London.

There is a bus service at the top of the road which is excellent (although not as frequent) opposite the tourist office, one can go to Salo, Limone, Maderno (and therefore Torri Del Benaco) and Riva from there. Tickets can be bought at the cafe opposite (where some Italian locals start appreciating red wine before 10am!!)

We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights and were fortunate to book one of two rooms with a shared private balcony ( shades of " Private Lives"). The service was some of the best we have ever received in a small hotel. Valerio was attentive and helpful; the staff ( all three) courteous; the food excellent;the hotel's position on the lake made it a very attractive spot. All in all a delightful stay and one day we hope to return

This hotel is a treasure of a find. Its a pretty little place on a very quiet street with lovely rooms and a restaurant with stunning views. Certainly after travelling to other parts of the lake we felt we had found the 'right place'. The sister hotel is just a few doors down the road and is equally as nice, though larger, but the du Lac has a clearer view of the lake. The only negative against this hotel was the evening waitress who was an absolute misery and tended towards the Germans rather than the English. Other English guests commented this to us as well. The sister hotel have lovely staff and the older gent waiter in particular was very helpful. We ate half board for 3 nights in our hotel but ate out 2 nights as we wanted to try the local food. If you come out of the hotel and turn right you will see a small restaurant a few doors down on the little square with white plastic furniture (which nearly put me off eating there!) but one night we noticed it was full, mostly of locals so thought we would give it a try and have to say it was a superb meal. You will not be disappointed with this hotel.

We spent three nights at the Hotel du Lac in Gargnano (note that some of the reviews in Trip Advisor are for OTHER places called "hotel du lac" in the area) and it is one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in. Although the decor is a little old fashioned, the rooms are clean and the air conditioning superb - but the highlight of the hotel is the dining experience. All meals are served on a terrace right on the lakeside (the water so clear you can see the fish as you eat) and the food is excellent.

As the other reviewer says, there are a number of other restaurants in the area which we also found good - but wish we'd eaten more in the hotel besides breakfast and one dinner.

Thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Gargnano is a small lakeside town which means infrequent ferry service which means fewer tourists which makes it an ideal place to stay if you want to be away from the crowds. The town has 6/7 restaurants and a few bars but has a very Italian feel. The Hotel Du Lac right on the lake and just a few minutes walk from the centre is just perfect. It has just 12 rooms - pay the extra for a balcony and lake view. Enjoy breakfast virtually sitting on the lake itself. The rooms have original period furniture and include all mod cons. The staff are most helpful and friendly. It's sister hotel just up the road is larger with a garden and excellant dining. We will return next year.
