“A charming, relaxing and beautiful stay.”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

Do to unseasonably heavy rain last February, the estancia's trout stream was totally blown out, and we were unable to fly fish. However, Walter, his charming family, their hospitality, food and this rustic family estancia and vineyard were quite beautiful and restful. Walter took us on a local tour, and we also spent a long afternoon riding in the scenic hills. We would very happily return to ride and fish. In fact we hope to do so some day.
Additionally, Andreas, our fishing guide felt badly about the inability to fish with and stream side cook for us, and so on our return to Mendoza, he took us on a tour of his town, Chacras, and to an exciting Gaucho rodeo.
We very much enjoyed our restful visit to this remotely beautiful and charming Argentine ranch. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Argentina.
Note: It's a fair drive through notable wine country south of Mendoza to Estancia San Pablo, and then a fair piece down back roads, but then this is an estancia in a narrow valley that stretches through the Andes to near the Chilean border. The views are spectacular.

Room Tip: It's either upstairs, or downstairs with the jacuzzi. Bring angled Argentina plug converters an...

We did a one day fly fishing tour with "Trout & Wine" tours, which brought us to Estancia San Pablo for breakfast and back again in the afternoon for meriendas. It was an amazing place - they are very self-sufficient over the winter, and make/preserve a lot of their food and drinks to get them through the colder months.

We had a breakfast of eggs and homemade jams on some kind of delicious gaucho bread - amazing!! And they whizzed up some preserved peaches and made a thick juice, which was really great!!

The property itself was beautiful - a really nice grand house with beautiful scenery in every direction. The river which we went fishing in originates in the Chilean Andesruns and runs along the property. There were plenty of fish in the river - we caught 3 fish to eat for lunch!!

Estancia San Pablo is a really magical place and I highly recommend going there!! We wish that we could have stayed for longer.

We stayed at Estancia San Pablo for several nights in February 2012 and found it to be a very unique experience for those wanting to venture a little further afield than the most travelers. Walter (the owner) picked us up at our B & B in Mendoza and drove us to the estancia – a drive that including fording the San Pablo river in his 4WD to reach the residence.

We were greeted with brunch in the wine cave with gaucho bread, preserves, prosciutto, wine - almost everything we ate and drank (all awesome) during our stay were products of the estancia. Walter and his family are wonderful hosts and the guestrooms have a rustic feel that confirm you’ve gone off the grid.

Activities include horseback riding into the foothills of the Andes – not for the faint-hearted in going up / down some of the inclines but the horses are extremely sure-footed in maneuvering thru the hills and crossing the slippery rocks as you ford the river multiple times. The condors soaring overhead are also an impressive sight.

Another option is fly fishing for rainbow trout in the San Pablo River – the trout don’t run large in the fast-moving stream but it offers plenty of challenges with its high gradient that requires line control and casting accuracy for success. The trout are numerous in the river so a stream-side lunch of freshly caught trout and Walter’s Malbec is a welcome reward.

Estancia San Pablo is highly recommended for those wanting a taste of Argentina that brings together its great people, food, wine, and scenery in a way that generates a travel experience that is both memorable and one-of-a-kind.
