We stayed at Estancia San Pablo for several nights in February 2012 and found it to be a very unique experience for those wanting to venture a little further afield than the most travelers. Walter (the owner) picked us up at our B & B in Mendoza and drove us to the estancia – a drive that including fording the San Pablo river in his 4WD to reach the residence.
We were greeted with brunch in the wine cave with gaucho bread, preserves, prosciutto, wine - almost everything we ate and drank (all awesome) during our stay were products of the estancia. Walter and his family are wonderful hosts and the guestrooms have a rustic feel that confirm you’ve gone off the grid.
Activities include horseback riding into the foothills of the Andes – not for the faint-hearted in going up / down some of the inclines but the horses are extremely sure-footed in maneuvering thru the hills and crossing the slippery rocks as you ford the river multiple times. The condors soaring overhead are also an impressive sight.
Another option is fly fishing for rainbow trout in the San Pablo River – the trout don’t run large in the fast-moving stream but it offers plenty of challenges with its high gradient that requires line control and casting accuracy for success. The trout are numerous in the river so a stream-side lunch of freshly caught trout and Walter’s Malbec is a welcome reward.
Estancia San Pablo is highly recommended for those wanting a taste of Argentina that brings together its great people, food, wine, and scenery in a way that generates a travel experience that is both memorable and one-of-a-kind.
