We found out somewhat too late that Aquarium is something of a legend in Bodrum, known both for the beauty of its views and for the capacity of its owners to overcharge.
Let's start with the positives. The calamari is outstanding, a perfect mix of al dente without being chewy whilst maintaining a good taste. Similarly, the "Laos" fish is very tasty, almost reminiscent of lobster in its texture with a great aftertaste.
Now to the negatives. We didn't actually order that "Laos" fish. We were quite clear in ordering one portion of the Laos dish with Aquarium's famous sauce. As the dish arrived, we confirmed again that this was the dish and we were assured that we had been served what we had ordered. When the bill came, we were shocked to discover the fish that had actually been served was three times more expensive than what we had ordered (we were charged over £50 for the fish alone).
We had a fairly lengthy discussion about this and eventually the owners agreed we were right and offered a bottle of wine as compensation. I heartily commend them for the gesture but I wonder whether most tourists would stick up for themselves in this way.
My own appraisal of this restaurant is that they are overly commercial in their outlook and see customers as cash-cows. I don't believe this fits with the wonderful vistas the otherwise beautifully decorated venue affords. I hope they improve. I should also note the octopus grill was dry, tasteless and clearly not fresh.
I would advise you steer away from this restaurant but if you do go expect good to middling food and be very strict in what you order. If they sense even a modicum of ambiguity they will take the shirt off your back.
