If you want Peace and tranquillity this is the place to be. To get away from the hustle and bustle of the coast and enjoy nature, this is one off the best locations there is.

You can approach the lakes from Ardales by taking MA-5403/MA-444 towards El Chorro. There are plenty of pull-in areas by the side of the road that provide [scrambled] access to the lake and a few places to rent pedalos, but we went to the dam at the [northern] end of the lake (past the turn off to El Chorro), where you will find a restaurant, El Kiosco, a small car park and steps to the lake.
Behind the restaurant is the start of a circular walk of 4.2km (mostly shaded) that takes about 2 hours. We were there at the end of August and it was not very busy. Other than a few flies, we were not troubled by insects. There was a pleasant breeze most of the time and the water was cool and clear.
It is worth driving on toward El Chorro. As you approach the village you will be able to see the Camino del la Rey walkway that is pinned to the gorge face on the other side of the small lake from the road.

The lakes at Ardales are just beautiful, electric blue fresh water and never too crowded. Even in the summer you can usually get a camping pitch. We often spend out days, just swimming and jumping in to the water, then back to the campsite for BBQ's and drinks in to the small hours. This is not like a UK campsite, very relaxed, well organised and beautiful. You find a lot of people who live on the coast escape up here in the summer to get away from the crowded beaches and it is a bit cooler as you are up in the hills a bit. Stoney, dusty and a bit of a trek to get here but worth it. This place could and I am sure will become a Mecca for outdoor pursuits soon.

These caves are not very well known but they are definitely worth the effort to find. They are on the internet but you need to ring to book a date and time to go. You can't find them on your own, you really need a guide and they are locked when there is nobody in them, so use the system.
Excellent guides who speak reasonable English.
The museum and prehistoric centre is worth a visit on its own.
There are not many opportunities to see prehistoric art from 20,000 years ago and this is a good one. Some of the drawings need a bit of imagination but the majority are very clear.
The whole are is really delightful - the lakes are beautiful and trhe whole park is worth a short (1 hour) drive from Malaga.
