“Cold comfort farm- but brilliant for cyclists, or those on a budget”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2012 via mobile

I so wanted to give this place a good review.....
I stayed on the hostel basis, so for ~£20 a night it's amazing value, given the beautiful gardens, views and infinity pool. San baronto is a cyclists Mecca for those interested. I'd disagree about the food being bad, I ate here every night, the pasta was great, with three different types each night, although the meat dishes looked a little uninspired. Breakfast is sparse. The rooms are fine, basic but with kitchen facilities/fridge which is a bonus.
The biggest problems are
1) the management. Agreed basil fawlty is a perfect analogy for the owner! And as for Patrick, the manager(?) The kindest thing I can say about him is that he really is not suited to the hospitality profession, I have no idea why he does this for a job. Overall between the two of them, you don't get the impression that customer satisfaction is a priority! Also the place seems to trade under three names which is a little odd....
2) the mozzies are a real problem- all the guests got attacked every night. I suggested to basil that he might invest in mozzie nets, but he thought guests might smoke and cause a fire. I pointed out that if this was the case, half of Asia would be burned down, but he'd stopped listening at this point, basil knows best!

Great for a budget stay, or if you like meeting people (I met lovely people of all ages/nationalities), or if you just avoid the staff as I did, or if you're all about cycling. If you're looking for a decent level of service or amenities, better off elsewhere.

we stayed here with a group of friends and children. unfortunately the food was so bad, that it was impossible to eat here. we had diner there one night, and he ordered us to like the dry and cold pasta! we didn't dare to say no. the location is beautiful, the swimmingpool very good for small children, but the landlord guido (Basil we called him) has cameras set on it, and as soon as you do something wrong, like moving a chair, or not wearing your bathing cap, he will correct you. and i had to pay 50cts for a pack of matches for the kitchen in the apartment (so that is not included). When we complained he came up with a better apartment, but that was already at the end of the week. apparently you should negotiate when you book a room.

but if i was young and without children, I don't think it would have mattered at all to me. the location is very good. And he's quite a laugh really, Italian Basil.

This property is in the most wonderful position with amazing views over the Tuscan countryside. The gardens and pool are wonderful. The rest was diabolical. Be warned, this place is run as both self catered apartments and as a backpackers hostel and the owner cannot make up his mind who his clientel really are! We booked through Owners Direct but he also trades as 'Heart of Tuscany Hostel' to backpackers (See trip advisor reviews under that name.)
When we arrived we were told to wait in the garden for 15 mins until the owner was ready to let us into our apartment and the hospitality didn't improve thereafter!
As 2 couples we stayed in Quattrofolio II. The apartment was scruffy and just about clean, the furniture was at best characterful (!) but mostly broken and the kitchen barely adequate for self-catering. The bathrooms were clean, but as others point out, the showers are 'wet-room' style so in the small space everything gets soaked.
The private balcony was walled in, but standing up there were incredible views of the sunset every night. We ate dinner in the 'restaurant' on our first night and most of the food was inedible - very bad value compared with the Monti Hotel in San Baronto where we had a lovely meal on our last night.
Having paid our deposit by credit card, the owner played the usual tax avoiding trick of claiming his card machine was out of order, so we had to incur additional charges to get cash. Strangely, the machine was working again when we paid our wine bill! (The estate wine is very nice and not a bad price)
Worst of all were the mosquitos. We were bitten every night and as no spray was provided in the the rooms, we suffered badly.
If you are expecting a grown-up, relaxing week in Tuscany, I recommend you pay a little more and go elsewhere, where the welcome will be charming and the accommodation more than basic. For young pack-packers,this place is probably good value in an expensive area.

Some days ago me and my wife were in Fattoria di Villa Rossa. It was fantastic, the most beautiful nature, shining sun and the star sky of Tuscany - it is unforgettable!!! We lived in villa, arranged to myself romantic suppers. But there is more to come, we were the big pool, gym.......... By the way, we were amazed with kindliness of owners of country houses and politeness of the personnel. We WISH to RETURN!!!!!!!!!!

I give out of 5 for the location. San Baronto is stunning.
I give 0 out of 5 for the management and quality of the place.
If you want to explore Tuscany and use San Baronto as a base, find somewhere else. Some experiences can be character building - this experience will just ruin your holiday.

The buildings look characterful from the outside. Inside, however, they are furnished with what looks like second-hand, cheap furniture. Bathrooms are disgusting, not just in their simplicity (shower whilst sitting on the toilet) but also in their cleanliness (no toilet brushes to be found on-site, apparently).
Management of the place is dire, lead by the owner Guido. They were surly and rude and not helpful in the slightest. Station pick-up did not happen (and from what I understand, no one was ever picked up despite promises to the contrary). The bus seemed to have endless mechanical problems - strange when you consider it to be new. At the end of the day, the management promised loads but delivered nothing, doing so in a nasty manner.

The swimming pool is stunning. Only problem is that you can't get anywhere near it for the lounging American youths who "work" there. Fattoria di Villa Rossa also advertises as Heart of Tuscany Youth Hostel, meaning you'll get more lounging youths thrown in. The youth hostelers pay less for the same accommodation as the Fattoria guests.

Breakfast is terrible and expensive for what you get. Instead, go to the bar in San Baronto where they are lovely and treat you very well. You can have breakfast overlooking Vinci and the valley to the sea - beautiful.

So there you go. Stay in Fattoria di Villa Rossa/Heart of Tuscany if you like being disappointed. If you want to enjoy your stay in San Baronto, find somewhere else (and there are loads of other places in the area).

Booked through Owners Direct. We were advised that the end of season was quiet but when we arrived they had basically closed. The one bedroom "cottage" we had was not very clean and appeared to have been shut up for some while. The toilet with integral shower was very basic given the cost of the accommodation, and the cooking facility was primitive. As it was October we expected that we would be able to turn heating on to take the chill off, but were advised that the local commune sets the date when tourist accommodation can turn the heating on which was the end of October. Patrick the owner's representative was totally uninterested in resolving any of these problems. We also had problems with no external lighting in the early part of the evening due to no one being able to adjust the timer.
The location and set up of the complex is delightful, but the owner appears to have lost interest so we cannot recommend it.

The beautiful views are about all the Fattoria can boast. The welcome we received was hardly welcoming: the host Patrick received us in a very unfriendly manner.
The cabin we were given was not properly cleaned and although we booked B&B, we weren't given a bed nor any breakfast. In our cabin there only was a sofabed, which was highly unconfortable.
Breakfast was a laugh as well: no crockery or cutlery, only a plastic plate (if you were lucky enough to get one). The "food" was served in an unhygienic way and hardly edible. Stale bread and cornflakes, usually served half an hour late.
We were expecting to stay in a productive olive grove but instead we found that most of the domain was totally overgrown andnot accessible.
The Fattoria was a real dissapointment!!!!!
