Owner description: A tiny island, little more than a rock-cliff, which is occupied almost entirely by a small, rustic village with narrow, winding lanes.

Isola dei Pescatori could be the hidden jewel of the borromean islands… I am afraid it is not. It is charming and small but the sheer number of restaurants on the island does hide a bit how nice the architecture and the island are.

I travelled with my wife in June 2012 and got the boat to the island from the privateers you can find in Stresa. The island itself is quite small and the only inhabited island on the lake I think. It is supposed to be a nice fisherman island, but the lake front is dominated by the touristic boat which is a shame and the inner part of the village is dominated by pricey restaurants.

You can walk around the island in less than an hour and it was a nice and refreshing stop before our trip back to Isola Bella. Bring a picnic, put your feet in the water, enjoy the lake views and go for a stroll in the village. I think this is as far as it goes… Worth a look, but do not expect to be blown away!

There are tons of great restaurants here, just wander until you find one that has the price and food you want. There are also many touristy shops. It is a cute little fishing island. Make sure you wander around the back streets of this place. It is so pretty. On a clear day, you can see the other islands (Isola Madre and Isola Bella) and towns from here. It does not cost any money to be on the island unless you eat or buy something. If you are just have time to see 2 of the islands, I would come here and Isola Bella.

. . . . there are plenty of other places to eat! My visit to l'Isola dei Pescatori was ruined because of the rude, unaccommodating, surly, ignorant manager who had the type of attitude that should not belong to a person who deals with the public. He'd be better off cleaning the streets - that way he wouldn't have to speak to anybody!!

Isola dei Pescatori is tiny - only 350m x 100m, so don't expect every luxury to be provided. All the food has to be brought over from the mainland so the choice, even in the best restaurants, tends to centre around the local fish. That being said, the charm of the island is that is tiny and that it is cut off from the mainland. There are no cars and the main thoroughfare takes two people walking abreast. Apart from that there are lots of alleyways leading down to the lake, each of which contains a shop or a café. Beware - they are all cobbled, so don't wear your best Italian high heels! The grocery stores sell bread rolls plus ham, cheese etc, so you can make your own lunch, or alternatively you can just get a slice of pizza at one of the cafés if you don't want pay for a big meal. This being Italy there are lots of places you can get a coffee and/or an ice cream.

During the day the island is full of tourists, who come over on one of the frequent ferries or private water taxis (you can pick these up at any of the ports and ring for them if necessary) but it's in the evenings that the island is at it's best. The crowds leave the cats come out of their sleeping places and you can sit by the shore and watch the lights come out across the lake. It's not everyone's idea of a great holiday, but we'll definitely be going back.

Isola dei pescatori is a lovely little island with plenty of character. Little cobbled backstreets with tiny little shops selling anything from pasta and bananas to touristy t-shirts and tea towels. We spent about an hour on there having a lovely wander and looking in the little shops and the church. At the far end of the island from the boat station is an area with a few trees and where you can watch ducks or just sit and watch the world go by. There are little market stalls too selling all manner of stuff. Despite the number of visitors it never felt overcrowded in the little narrow streets. It's definitely worht a visit!
