“Good, can be excellent”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

Very nice restaurant, a very welcome addition to the regular Portuguese restaurants you can find on every corner of the street. The menu offers lots of different dishes, staff are friendly, nicely decorated restaurant.
The food was good, but there is room for improvement. We all had meat dishes, and there's only meat and chips, no vegetables. Even a small salad would do the trick.
I had the Moulin Rouge, pork cheeks. They were cold! The taste was nice but it would have been much better if they were warm. Luckily all the other dishes were warm.
My dessert made up a lot: Fetish de Chocolate, a warm chocolate cake, soft on the inside, with basil mousse. Mouthwatering!

“A pleasant change from the norm....”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2013

We have been here twice before, but went for a thrid time when relatives visited this week. They were extremely impressed with the food, totally different from the 'typical' Portuguese lunch time menu, and with the modern interior. The only gripe was the fact that service was a little on the slow side, but the place was packed, and we weren't in a rush, so all in all it was a pleasant experience. Will no doubt be back.

“Could have been good”

Good taste on the food, but should have been warm. Slow service is the reason why the food was not hot

“Portuguese Cool”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2012

Portugal has an unfortunate reputation in the gastronomy handbooks... if you've ever had a "House Special", as I have, which consisted of steak accompanied by a slice of spam on top with a fried egg as the crowning glory... you'll know what I mean. But not so with this restaurant: Maratona redresses the balance way over in favour of Portuguese cuisine at its very best. A beautifully presented, fashionably furnished, "boutique" atmosphere, city eating house. We ate out as a threesome and our friend and guide recommended the pork cheeks for us while she had a hamburger... no great shakes you might think; but my goodness - the presentation and rich combination of sauces and dressing gave each dish a distinctly gourmet feel and taste. The staff are relaxed, well informed, multi-lingual and clearly enthused to be working in Maratona. We had three courses, a bottle of the house red, a bottle of Pellegrino sparkling water (which cost almost as much as the hose red)... Oh, and a lovely chilled, white port as an aperitif: And the bill? About £25 a head. Excellent value and a great night out.

“Excellent value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2012

We visited this restaurant twice and wished we could also have spent some time in the adjacent café, but Portugal has lots to offer and we simply ran out of time. We found Maratona to be excellent value for money and they offered some really interesting dishes which tried to put a modern spin on traditional Portuguese food. It is very family friendly and when we ate, there were customers of all ages enjoying themselves. The staff were extremely polite and the only thing to mark it down was a little inconsistency in the dishes, my wife had a squid risotto which was a little on the soupy side and one of my mains was a little cool, but we would go back again in a shot!
