Portugal has an unfortunate reputation in the gastronomy handbooks... if you've ever had a "House Special", as I have, which consisted of steak accompanied by a slice of spam on top with a fried egg as the crowning glory... you'll know what I mean. But not so with this restaurant: Maratona redresses the balance way over in favour of Portuguese cuisine at its very best. A beautifully presented, fashionably furnished, "boutique" atmosphere, city eating house. We ate out as a threesome and our friend and guide recommended the pork cheeks for us while she had a hamburger... no great shakes you might think; but my goodness - the presentation and rich combination of sauces and dressing gave each dish a distinctly gourmet feel and taste. The staff are relaxed, well informed, multi-lingual and clearly enthused to be working in Maratona. We had three courses, a bottle of the house red, a bottle of Pellegrino sparkling water (which cost almost as much as the hose red)... Oh, and a lovely chilled, white port as an aperitif: And the bill? About £25 a head. Excellent value and a great night out.
