No piped music, flashing light, games, slot machines, just the sound of talking, fantastic ales and great food.
If you could can the atmosphere in this pub, you'd make a fortune.

For more years than I care to remember we have driven past this classic English pub always threatening to drop in for a beer and a meal but never having the time. Last week - no timetable, no other agenda - so we called in. The only disappointment was that we hadn't done so before. This place is a gem. I hesitate from praising it too highly as wouldn't want too many people to "discover" it - but the owners and staff deserve recognition.

To keep the review short and sweet here are the highlights:
An excellent selection of real ales, perfectly kept and served by knowledgeable bar staff.
Great food - simple and home-cooked using local produce where possible - but no evidence of food snobbery here - which was refreshing especially as the food was so good.
Friendly and efficient service with a great atmosphere. This pub was buzzing early on a mid-week evening. It must be fantastic when there is something to celebrate - though, fortunately, you won't be watching it on the TV in this bar.

Don't take our word for it - and don't drive past it.

We hadn't visited The Halfway House for a while, but it hadn't changed. We arrived about 2pm on a sunny Saturday. the garden was full and a young waitress delivering hearty sandwiches to customers. Inside was busy but we found a table (this place is a sharing table type). Great range of food. We had a Beef Madras and Chicken Kasmiri which were both superb and at a fair price. My partner enjoyed choosing from the many local beers available. All in all a lovely lunch.
We will not be leaving it so long before we return.

A deservedly outstanding winner of the Best Pub in the South West.
A warm welcome to this pub with an unpretentious atmosphere is guaranteed; the overflow onto the lawn is a true indication of its popularity with locals and visitors alike.
The food is great from a varied menu and 'daily boards' with good service to match.

We went to the Halfway House, as a last minute replacement for another pub that decided to shut on a Bank Holiday. I was pleased at this turn of events, as the pub was a real gem. It has a wide selection of ales and ciders and was busy, but not overly crowded.

The bar man found us a table at the back and promptly took our order for drinks. The cider he recommended was delicious. We ordered from the menu boards that has all the usual suspects e.g. steak, fish and chips, burgers, home made pies, etc. I had the beef chilli with chips that was hot and fresh with a nice heat, but not too spicy. My wife and daughter had the fish and chips and I advise you have a real hunger before you order. What can only be described as Moby Dick in batter arrived with a large portion of chips and peas - wow. The fish was massive and really tasty, as I had to help out to finish it.

Very good overall experience - a drinkers pub, but they have not let the food side slip.

Definitely on my list for next years foray into Somerset.
