“Delicious dinner”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

We are still talking about our fantastic meal at The Devonshire Arms. The food was delicious, and the only reason that we've given a '4' rather than a '5' rating is because we were abandoned straight after we were shown to our table and had to wait ages to order a drink let alone get one! We would have happily had a glass of wine while perusing the menu, so the Devonshire would probably have sold an extra bottle of wine had they been a bit more attentive. This was our only gripe, don't let it put you off if you're thinking of going.

We ordered a nice but not over the top red wine and the waitress asked if we would like it to be decanted. We took her up on her offer.

My partner's duck pate starter was 'magnificent'. Three of us had lamb as main course, one friend had duck, all delicious. The puddings - trio of crème brulée, treacle tart with vanilla ice cream and chocolate fondant were all fantastic.

We can't wait to go back, but will order wine at the bar before we go to our table!

We stayed just one night at the Devonshire Arms. We were given a superb large room with a spotless, excellent bathroom. Very comfortable and relaxing. We enjoyed both our evening meal, great choice of local produce which was beautifully presented and breakfast which was quiet with a good choice and met our needs. The staff were both friendly and helpful.
We had no problem with noise, perhaps because the property was not busy.
It was a totally relaxing stay and we would, most certainly go back. We were recommended DA by someone who lives quite locally.

I have stayed here with my work on a number of occasions now and would recommend the Devonshire Arms to anyone. The accommodation is of a very high standard with recently refitted bathrooms, comfortable beds and is spotlessly clean. The food is excellent and the cooked breakfasts in particular are very good with high quality ingredients used. The evening menu is of a high standard and excellent, as is the beer. The service is good, with friendly and polite staff and nothing seems too much trouble.

I will continue to happily stay here any time I am in the area.

Room Tip: Room 6 is the best, but they're all good.

We had a large room with an attractive modern bathroom. The room was a bit chilly on a freezing cold night, but spotlessly clean.

Excellent food with a wide ranging wine list, served with charm, good humour and attention.

Breakfast was an impersonal affair. No sign of mine host. One croissant between two until more requested and that was only partially cooked. Cardoboard box orange juice. After the fun of the dinner this part was a bit of a let down.

Overall the Devonshire is fantastic value for money. We were in room 1, a beautiful room under the eaves with a huge bathroom. The bathroom had a wonderful free standing bath and was full of light, and the bedroom was slightly less stylish, but very comfortable and cosy. The main downfall for what was a very nice room was the noise. We were directly above the kitchen so could hear the kitchen staff and their music very clearly - even down to what people were ordering! This was a bit of a shame as we had booked the hotel so we could spend relaxing time in the room, catching up on sleep and using the bath etc. It was frustrating, but didn't ruin the experience.

Next, dinner. When we checked in we booked a table for 8pm and arrived a few minutes early to be told there was a slight delay and to have drink while we waited, approx half an hour they said. We had a lovely seat by the fire and a drink, so were very happy to wait. Our order was taken before we were seated, about half an hour later, but we weren't seated until 9.20pm, that's an hour and twenty minutes after we arrived. Then, food didn't arrive for another 10 minutes. We were having a good time together, so it wasn't the end of the world, but we were starving and a little perplexed at other diners getting seated before us and the fact that most people had finished eating by the time our first course arrived. Luckily the food was worth the wait - it was really delicious.

We had a good, quiet (!), night's sleep in the wonderful bed and had a brilliant breakfast. We did wish the breakfast was a bit later, on a Sunday it would be nice to sleep it past 9.30, but it was fine. A delicious cooked breakfast was accompanied by tea, coffee, wonderful juices and croissants - brilliant.

So, all in all, very good value and a lovely stay. I would perhaps try to avoid room 1 if you are planning on spending time in the room. And maybe make your dinner reservation in advance (probably our fault). The hotel is in a beautiful location and is a very attractive building. It isn't boutiquey or particularly stylish, but it is cosy and well decorated. I would recommend it and would consider returning.

Room Tip: Room 1 is above the kitchen and so very noisy!

A dinner bed and breakfast gift here was given to my partner and I, so we used this as a Valentine's treat. We had a sunny, dual aspect deluxe double room with en-suite shower room with bath. We had the use of a dvd player (on request) and had lovely views over the village green and church. This is a small village location with a footpath for a local walk nearby. A large, staggered garden stands to the rear which must be lovely in summer months.

Downsides: The room was rather too warm at night, the shower pressure was poor and there was no fresh coffee or minibar however the plus points were - v.comfortable bed with loads of pillows, amazing food (the restaurant was packed and great breakfast too), great location, 'boutique' decor and really friendly and accommodating staff. Would highly recommend and visit again!

Room Tip: Our room faced the front and had two windows so the room was nice and light. I noticed the rooom beh...

I loved the Devonshire Arms - great accommodation, fabulous bathroom, tastefully decorated, modern quality feel to it, lovely view over the village green. The food was excellent, staff friendly and helpful, a pint of Harry's cider by the open fire - unbeatable. The village is very quiet and peaceful and there are a number of walks you can do to work up an appetite. If you're looking for a restful and cozy weekend away - the Devonshire arms is a very good choice. I'm looking forward to returning.
