Stayed 2 nights in this 16 th century hotel. Great atmosphere but modern facilities. Very large rooms, comfortable beds, bathroom with bidet and good hot wat supply. The restaurant within is by reasonable, and breakfast more than sufficient. Quiet on top of a mountain within close proximity to mt Etna or just somewhere to get away . Parking is no issue, be warned some of the streets are very narrow and cobble stoned

Room Tip: No lift and some stairs not handicapped friendly but then most mountain top villages are tricky

A very very nice little family runned hotel with modern warm colored clean rooms, friendly and helpfull staff. Located in the center of a very small village on north side of Etna. It is situated high up on a small mountain and it is easy to park at the top square. The village is rather quite and not many people living in the town making the place a fantastic place to rest and clear the mind. Many historical buildings and tiny streets. The hotel also have an fantastic restaurant called Sine Temporare. We ate there all 5 nights we stayed at the hotel. Excellent food and great house wine. The town is placed in the Etna wine region which have the great wine called Etna DOC. In deed a must stay and or eat at place.

We stayed at Hotel Federico II for 3 nights and used it as a base to explore east Sicily. It's 20 minute drive to the main roads which quickly get you to Taormina or Syracuse. The town itself is clearly in decline with a lot of abandoned buildings but the hotel is immaculate with very well presented rooms. We had a good sized room on the first floor with a balcony with great views. Our room and the rest of the hotel was spotlessly clean.

The staff were helpful and courteous at all times providing information about local places to visit and the best routes to take. There is a restaurant in the hotel and another just a couple of minutes walk away both of which we tried and enjoyed.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this charming little town, in large part because of this very comfortable and reasonably priced hotel.

Castiglione di Sicilia is a medieval town untouched by tourism. It is close to both Etna and Taormina, the principal attractions of north-east Sicily but it is feasible to travel farther afield to the Roman villa at Piazza Armerina, to Cefalu or to the old town at Syracuse for example all of which I would recommend.
However, Castiglione itself with its castle and churches is peaceful and pleasant for strolling round especially in the evening. It makes an ideal base away from the seething tourism and expense of Taormina.
The Hotel Federico II, named after one of the most powerful Holy Roman Emperors who based his court in Sicily, is in a 13th Century mansion. It is run by an extended family who we found to be very friendly and committed to making their guests feel at home. We booked the 'junior suite' through booking.com which turned out to be very comfortable with balcony and views over the rooftops. The food was excellent. I had researched other restaurants to try but we dined every evening at the Sine Tempore which is part of the hotel simply because I thought we could not do better.
We stayed there for 5 days and loved it!

There aren't many hotels in Castiglione di Sicilia and you could do far worse than choose the Hotel Federico II. We had a pleasant room (after rejecting the hotel's initial offering immediately off the entrance lobby). It was spacious, clean, quiet and reasonably comfortable, though an easy chair would have been a nice addition. The bathroom fixtures need a bit of attention as flushing the toilet turned out to be a game of chance; perhaps with more time, we'd have figured out the secret. Wi-fi, available without charge, seemed to work only in the lobby.

Getting to the hotel can be a hair-raising challenge in a car. Reportedly, entering "Centro Storico" in a GPS will get you to Piazza Lauria, which is where you park in any case. Following our GPS's directions to Via Maggiore Baracca led us through streets that were only inches wider than the small car we were driving. It was an experience I wouldn't want to repeat--something one might recount to his or her grandchildren someday.

The town itself has its charms and seemed to be tidy wherever we wandered. There aren't a lot of shops or places of interest, other than the castle ruins and a few Baroque churches. If you're short of cash, an ATM is available a few steps beyond Piazza Lauria.

We had dinner at the hotel's restaurant, albeit reluctantly, as we couldn't find any other places. (Though we speak Italian, we got no help in this regard from the hotel's proprietor.) Dinner there was very good and prices turned out to be quite reasonable. Breakfast, however, was disappointing. It featured a wide selection that included cold cereals, yoghurt, salame, cooked ham and bread for toasting. The individually wrapped slices of cheese were an industrialized confection that we didn't bother trying. There was some fresh fruit--but just apples that were past their prime. The two "juices" were actually juice drinks, horribly sweet, that only a child could like. We had expected better, though we didn't go hungry. With a little more effort--and modest expense--the hotel could significantly improve the overall guest experience.

None of these complaints should dissuade you from staying at the Hotel Federico II. It was indeed "very good" and we hope it will improve further.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room on the upper level.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay in this gem of a hotel run by a charming family in the interesting medieval town of Castiglione di Sicilia. The hotel and our room was spotlessly clean and comfortable and every interaction with the staff warm and friendly. We ate in the hotel restaurant Sine Tempore every night enjoying Sicilian specialties and wonderful wines from the Etna region. The food was a standout and a highlight of our two week holiday in Sicily. The town affords spectacular views of Etna and the surrounding valley. We would highly recommend a visit to Castiglione di Sicilia staying at Hotel Federico II.

We stayed for 10 days and enjoyed very much our holiday. Great hotel, very friendly, extremely kind and helpful staff (it's a family business, everyone was helping which gave the whole place a special atmosphere and made you feel at ease and almost like home right away). Definitely the place to choose if you're looking for a special experience, authenticity, charm and great local food & wine (and want to avoid the big impersonal hotel chains). The restaurant is amazing, the food and wine were so good and the littel terrace in fron of the hotel so cosy that we decided it's not worth trying other restaurant so we ate there whenever possible. The town, situated at the feet of Etna has a special charm, very authentic (locals were very welcoming), and it is a quite good departure point (only by car) to visit all Sicily, especially the coast with Taormina, Catania,Messina and the Etna region. We will surely go back!
