Horse Country Resort, Congress and Spa
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in Arborea
Reviewed April 27, 2013

Summary: Not recommendable; incompetent & inflexible staff; poor breakfast quality; dark rooms, but close to beach and quiet. During off season very cheap (doubkle room, single occupancy April 2013 EUR 49).
Horse Country Resort is large complex of several larger buildings and a group of about 30 - 50 bungalows. It is the right place for families with kids, especially girls, who are eager to do horse riding. In the season it will not be a quiet place. Restaurants and bars are huge. The location is directly at the beach, there is no noise of any busy road. In the neigborhood you find mainly farms and a few other touristic establishments (approx. 1 km away).
I was on a business trip during the low season (end of April). The hotel was nearly empty. Only the main building was open. Furniture / bed / bath room have basic level, nothing fancy: bed, chair, very small table; floors are without carpets, which is positive. Nearly all rooms have a balcony, but only half of the balconies have an acceptable view. The others face just the wall of a building in 2 - 5 meters. Windows are small, i.e. even on the top level (2nd floor) the rooms are dark. The breakfast in the morning was offered in the very big restaurants (approx. 200 possible seats), where you could imagine a conference but not a cosy, nice breakfast area. The offered selection was low class: the typical Italian varieties of plastic packed items of cookies, factory-made bread, yoghurt, mass-market cheese and ham; the coffee was just a Nescafe-like machine, nothing encouraging; no offer of capuchino or espresso freshly made (as in most Italian hotels).
When checking in, I did not realize the poor quality of rooms and food. I asked for a change of my dark room (the hotel was nearly empty), which was impossible. The staff was very inflexible.
The area around the hotel is perfect for bicycling: very low traffic, partly asphalted, partly gravel roads. I asked for support to rend a bicycle. Obviously the staff had never thought about bicycling and was not knowledgeable. Jooging: Nice trails around the hotel (not marked).
Alternatives: If you want to stay in this area of Sardinia try Cabras (varacation/business) or the traditional hotels of Oristano (business).

Room Tip: If you really want to stay in this hotel, take a room on the top floor, at the end of the wings. Bal...

My wife and I stayed for two nights at the Horse Country Hotel and Resort at the beginning of August 2012. Finding the Resort was easy, and directions were good. The structure consists of different buildings for the reception, restaurant, pools and poolside bars, and attractive separate two-storey blocks for the bedrooms. There was a large parking area, and guests are allowed to drive up to their accommodation areas in order to load and unload their luggage, which is good. The staff at the reception were friendly even though there were a lot of people, and we were attended to with no delay. We asked to change our first choice room, and were given an alternative quickly and without fuss, another positive point.
The room was reasonably clean and sunny, with its own little garden area for drying towels and sitting in the sun. The air conditioning was adjustable, and there was a safe, minibar/fridge and TV.
Both breakfast and dinner were buffet style in a wide low room, which quickly became hot when a large number of people were inside. Breakfast was served from 07:30 onwards, and there was a wide variety of options, eggs, bacon, cereals, cold cuts, fruit, yoghurt and cakes and pastries as well as the usual array of hot and cold drinks.
Dinner was in the same style, and although the quantity was impressive, the quality was only to be expected from mass catering at this level. Nevertheless, there was a wide variety of salads, even though some of them looked familiar.
The 13 metre pool was a little dirty, although admittedly it was at the end of the day, while the recreational pool was clean and attractive, with a good supply of sun loungers and umbrellas. The evening entertainments (Horse Country’s got talent) was very funny, and the staff were friendly and approachable. There were ample sports facilities, although having not used them I cannot comment. I would be very happy to return and find out more, and I would recommend this hotel/Club to anyone with children.

This hotel is totally not worth a single star of it's four. Let me
start with the so called 'villini', continue with food and conclude
with the service.
The rooms are way too much humid, the air conditioning was not working
properly and hot water was only a favor for the first person in the
bathroom. The beds are more or less okay but for cold nights you need
to ask for several times for an additional blanket. You can be lucky if you have a pillow, which in our case arrived only after 2days. Not acceptable!

The quality of the restaurant is incredebily low for a four star hotel. In the morning
there is no service at the tables. You have to wait in a line to get a coffee. Bread (i am talking about real bread) is not available as well, and the cereals are so bad that you want to bring your own breakfast. This breakfast you want then to eat on your own dishes,
because the hotels' was always dirty as hell. If you ask the staff, they will tell you that they have polished them instead of offering to bring you a new one.
Dinner was always the same choice as lunch the same day earlier. The organization of the buffet was chaotic - if the hotel is booked out you feel like in a guerilla war to get your food. Total chaos! Also not acceptable. Besides that you are only able to drink water or bad wine (red/white).
Coffee is mainly served in plastic cups which is not Italian style.
The service in total was quite low too. The staff was not friendly or gave a helping hand at all. Internet did not work at all during the first three days. The parking lots are too far away from the room so that you have to take an extra effort to bring all your staff to the rooms. The Beach is small, not clean and not spectacular at all.
In total you can totally not advise to go to this crazy horse country to anybody.
Eventually there are way better hotels and resorts in Sardinia.

Horse Country has been our choice for the second time this year, we went there two years ago in July and we found the place very relaxing for its beautiful pine garden and the availability to horse riding at a good price. Of course you would need your own car to discover other beaches, it would be a pity not to get there, for instance you cannot miss 'Is Arutas' being part of a protect area at approx 20 min driving from the resort.

This hotel states it is four star but our experience was that the accommodation was below our expected standard and that the food was in our opinion limited in choice and variable in quality. No hot breakfast and malfunctioning equipment in dining area. The beach was not that nice and there was a lot of seaweed lying around (needing a tractor to attempt a clearance). There was apparently no hotel manager in overall charge so complaining was very difficult. This place does not seem to be used by UK tour operators from what we saw as we were apparently the only UK originating people there. The vast majority of guests were from Italy at the time we were there. The entertainment was quite interesting, even if it was all in Italian but I will certainly not return.

We are just back from a week at Horse Country. The beach is shabby and not for bathing as there is a lot of very prickly seaweed. The nearest town is 4 kms away and you need a hire car to be able to get around. The food is not great - we were glad not to have to eat breakfast there again - it was getting very difficult to find some variety - very under-ripe fruit and the orange juice (from a machine) would have made good nail varnish remover.

The pool areas are quite nice but you are not supposed to use them between 12.30 and 3.30 pm! Rooms are a good size but by no means luxurious although the air conditioning was good.

If you just want a week lying by the pool and are happy to have to go out every night to find something to eat then it is fine. We did not pay a fortune and had a hire car and there are good restaurants in Oristano - 20 minutes drive away- but nowhere you can walk to
