“Bienvenue en France”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

We stayed at la Ferme du Gravier for one night recently with two friends from England. We liked the look of the place online and the email conversation I had with Francoise (in French) helped me feel welcomed even before we arrived. We managed to get lost (thanks to TomTom) and Francoise was helpful on the phone in redirecting us. She actually called us to find out if we were on our way. Thus we arrived and were made to feel welcome by her and the dogs.
Because our friends wanted single beds, we had to stay in the two un-renovated rooms. When we had a look at the rooms that had been renovated the next morning we were impressed by the standard.
The table d'hôte was good fun. There was another couple staying there and we had a lively conversation throughout the typically French evening meal. Starting with apero of choice! the wine during the meal was from Cahors and excellent. Both Francoise and Michel speak reasonable English and are keen to learn. One of us had requested a vegetarian meal and whilst not desperately exciting it turned out to be well presented and filling. All the food is sourced locally.
The rooms were comfortable although due for renovation.
In the evening, Francoise got out the telescope and we all peered at the moon through the clouds and spotted a few stars as well.
Breakfast was plentiful. There was no shortage of anything you needed and the coffee kept coming. Francoise was very helpful in giving us local knowledge of places to visit and a scenic route home at the end of our second day. We will be back because la Ferme is so well placed for exploring the area.

This property is in a quiet area of the Lot countryside but you could not say that this couple from Paris are naturals in the hospitality business. When we arrived the "welcome" from Michel was so brief and cool that we mistook him for a staff member unused to the task of welcoming guests! The room was clean and well-presented, however, if a little small for us and our teenage son.
We had reserved the table d'hote meal for the evening but Francoise, who does the cooking herself, simply forgot that I had forewarned her that I am a vegetarian, in spite of the fact that she had sent me an e-mail confirming that she had taken careful note of this fact. I was therefore presented with duck to eat! This was removed when I explained and replaced with - a plate of mashed potato garnished with 5 cherry tomatoes!! Similarly, the breakfast the next morning was far from being "copieux" (as claimed on their website) - one croissant and small slice of toast per person. I have never before had a breakfast in France without a fresh baguette. Granted the homemade jams were very nice but not without something to spread them on! It appears "nouvelle cuisine" is the order of the day here and not the usual plentiful country-style food that you get at table d'hotes in rural France.
What saved the experience was the very pleasant company of the other guests at dinner. However, the overall impression was of a couple who are not entirely comfortable with earning their living in this way and I suspect they may not be doing it from choice.
Very little English is spoken by the couple - which was not a problem for us but it might prove difficult for anyone without reasonable French.

I write in english, it will be not perfect but not so so bad !
This room LILAS (2 pers) was the last room available, but if you accept to get this room for 3 people because it's just for 1 night, why this reproach ?
For the table d'hôtes, my apologies again, I forgot, yes, the vegetarian menu but it would have been simpler to tell it to me at the entrance (melon from Moncuq with smoked ham from Quercy !) I would have had more time to prepare more vegetables !
For the bread of the breakfast, every morning it's a fresh and delicious country bread, toasted or not, and AT WILL, so I don't understand !
There was indeed a lack of dialogue between us, it is unfortunate and we hope better for next time

We first stayed 3 nights at La Ferme du Gravier in June 2011 and very impressed with the welcome from Francoise and Michel. We stayed again for 3 nights in June 2012 and were not disappointed- the rooms are clean and comfortable, the hospitality is excellent and the evening meals an enjoyable experience. It is a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere and we have hopes of staying again in the future. Unfortunately on both occasions the weather was not conducive to using the swimming pool.
