I first read about Hotel K in NYT travel and it sat on my wish list for a year before my husband and I made it there. We had always traveled by train in Europe, but on this trip we rented a car is Strasbourg, drove through Alsace during the day, and headed to Hotel K at night. I struggled trying to figure out how to get to the hotel. I'm sure that had I e-mailed the hotel they would have given me directions, but I wanted to see it on a map. The ViaMichelin website is awesome and gave us the best directions by mapping Baerenthal and selecting the "Restaurants" display. We arrived just after nightfall, which made the last leg of narrow, winding, unlit road seem that much more treacherous. We found the restaurant and hotel with relative ease, but were still a little frazzled by the drive when we arrived. The host who greeted us in the hotel was very nice and accommodating. After showing us to our room, he brought us champagne and some amuses bouche to help us relax before dinner. We stayed in the Gingembre room and did not have one criticism. It was clean, modern and comfortable. I enjoyed opening the windows and looking out at the hotel grounds from our sitting area. Dinner was leisurely and fantastic. Our servers tried to accommodate us by speaking in English, but we often had to meet halfway stretching their English and my French to understand what we were eating. It was fun and endearing and the servers were very good spirited about it. With full bellies, we had a wonderful night's sleep and were very excited for breakfast in the morning. The hotel had been so quiet during the night, I was almost surprised to see other people in the breakfast room. The night before, we weren't quite sure what to order from the breakfast menu and both my husband and I added omelettes (which came with an up charge). They were excellent, but there was so much other food that it was unnecessary. At checkout, we were given a farewell gift bag which contained a fruitcake. I had heard so many horror stories about fruitcake in my day that we were reluctant to try it. But, we had a long drive to Burgundy ahead of us and we broke that fruitcake out at a rest stop. It was absolutely amazing. You can look forward to fruitcake from a chef with a few Michelin stars to his credit! Overall, our stay was wonderful. It was an adventure to get there, but we found a hidden treasure. We plan to head back this year and hope to spend more time exploring the area.

Our stay at Hotel K and dinner at L'Arnsbourg was absolute perfection!
The place is in the middle of nowhere, but well worth the side trip.
Service was professional, friendly, attentive, but not suffocating.
My husband and I have been fortunate to dine at some top restaurants, but agree that L'Arnsbourg is the best.
Dinner was to die for, and very good value in comparison to 3 star restaurants in Paris.
It is clear the servers, owners, and sommellier have passion and pride in what they do.
Our hotel room was spotlessly clean and beautiful. We wish we had arrived earlier in the evening to enjoy it more!
We opted to spluge on the 25 euro per person breakfast. It was pricey, probably over priced, but getting it delivered to our room and eating it in our bathrobes was truly luxurious and memorable, so I would do it again.
We hope to have the good fortune of returning in the future!
Do yourself a favour and splurge for one night. The memory will last a lifetime!

We have been visiting Jean-George Klein's L'Arnsbourg Restaurant, set in a remote area of the Vosges du Nord, every year since it gained its second Michelin star. It now has 3 stars and its reputation is as high as any restaurant in Europe for its wonderfully innovative cuisine which focuses on concentration and marriage of flavours, with immaculate execution.

On a recent visit we enjoyed the Menu Decouverte - a succession of small courses and mouthfuls. Typical was the "Black and White de Truffes en Texture Modifiee". This turned out to be a spoonful of "Spaghetti" made from Parmesan with a white truffle sauce, and a small risotto-like dish made from pine nuts and served with black truffles. It was not just imaginative but absolutely delicious, which is typical of this great chef. The bill was not light, but neither was it unduly heavy. We certainly thought it good value at about 425 Euros for two including aperitifs, and two bottles of wine (a well chosen Savenierres and a Bandol). The service as always was attentive and friendly.

This year for the first time we stayed at the Hotel K which has been built on the wooded slopes above the restaurant. The rooms are large and comfortable and with balconies to enjoy the scenery and the spectacular quiet. We didn't take breakfast which at 25 Euros a head (eggs 8 Euros extra) was more than we wanted to pay, though doubtless excellent.

I strongly recommend a visit to K and L'Arnsbourg for a wonderful meal and a delightfully peaceful stay.
