“One of a Kind Beachfront Eco-Lodge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2012

We arranged with the Lodge to be picked up at the airport in Manta. After about an hour drive the road ended at the coast and our driver made a left turn right onto the beautiful beach. About 20 minutes later we were at the lodge which is perched on a hillside with incredible views up and down the beach. What is most amazing about the views is that there was NOBODY on the beach. Since there is no road to Chirije and you can only come and go when the tide is low, the Chirije guests have miles of beached to explore with virtually nobody else on the beach.

Our room was comfortable with great beach view from the room and a comfortable hammock. We enjoyed watching the pelicans fly by and the frigate birds diving. If you want the best room, ask for the one that President Correa and his family stayed at.

The beach and surrounding cliffs have lots of pre-colombian ceramic shards and the Lodge has a museum with artifacts. Some of the teenagers took surfing lessons and we all enjoyed the ocean.

We had such a relaxing vist at Chirije but didn't see any UFOs.

I live in Ecuador for almost 17 years now, and have wanted to visit Chirije - pronounced chee-ree'-hay -- for about ten years. I finally had the great pleasure of a three day stay. Chirije is an small and outstanding beachfront eco-lodge which has been declared an archeological site and with good reason. The owners and staff could not have been more accommodating and friendly, and we enjoyed the hikes and loved the archeological class and tour which owner Patricio gave to us and some Italian journalists on our first morning.
The beach itself is exquisite, well packed and wide, with warm water and gentle waves - perfect for swimming and body surfing, and for beach walks to your heart's content. One has to enter and exit Chirije during the low tides, which makes timing a visit just a little tricky -- but you end up on literally miles of deserted beach around Chirije, so it is absolutely worth the effort, plus the ride is quite enjoyable. Perspective guests should contact Patricio the owner -who speaks perfect English by the way - before coming so he can organize transport from Bahia or from the airport in Manta.
The cottages are comfortable and pleasant as is the social area and dining area. The food was quite tasty, especially the shrimp from the family's organic shrimp farm. Ask for the beachfront suite if it is available. It is heavenly.(The president of Ecuador stayed there with his family just a couple of weeks before us.)
Patricio, an excellent surfer in his time, offers beginning to intermediate surfing lessons and although we did not avail ourselves this visit, it seems like it would be great fun. Diving and snorkeling can also be arranged with some advance planning. Very helpful were Orlando, their local host who was always looking out for our well-being and comfort, and Mariquita, who was hosting and cooking while we were there. We would return to Chirije in a heartbeat, and we plan to get back soon!
You might also want to stay at owner Patricio's charming boutique hotel on the ocean in Bahia, called the Casa Grande, which has a lovely pool and gardens. From there you can enjoy strolling the waterfront attractions of this charming coastal city. In Bahia, go the archeology museum with one of the best collections of ancient artifacts and ceramics dating back over six thousand years. Don't miss the tour of Isla Corazon, an inspiring and dramatic community ecological project to reforest this mangrove island, where you will encounter a large number (of the many thousands) of sea birds which call it home. You will also learn first hand about the deforestation of mangroves by reckless shrimp farming.

Room Tip: Try for the oceanfront suite or ask Patricio for the best cottage available.

Driving down the beach at low tide, passing fishermen searching the rocks for octopus you arrive at the Chirije Ecolodge and drive up the bank to find a most amazing place. No where have I seen such a unique combination of ecolodge, archaeological site and ufo port! That's right, the location has seen, according to accounts, a great deal of otherworldly activity. I got up both nights to stare at the sky but all I saw was the silhouette of the mountains against the night sky full of stars with the ocean pounding the beach in the background as the soundtrack. The artifacts in the little onsite museum date back as far as 4800 BC signifying the longstanding importance of this area. Artifacts routinely are discovered on the surrounding beaches as the ocean tides lap up against the bluffs and slowly peal back the layers of time.
As it was slow season we were the only two guests and we had the best room in the house, the ocean front suite. Orlando and Mariquita took wonderful care of us and you hardly new that you were staying in a remote lodge. The food was delightful. We arrived for a night, stayed for two and would still be there if we did not have to leave the country to return to the US. Don't miss it if you are in the area. Hopefully you will be onsite while Patricio is there as he is the resident expert on the history of the former residents and visitors of all kinds.

Room Tip: Room 5 is the ocean view suite I believe.

Really, loved this place! If you want a totally relaxing holiday this is the place to be. Delightfully isolated and peaceful, spent most the time on the beach, swimming, reading and walking. The staff a friendly and attend to all your needs and the food in the restaurant is fantastic.

Recommend this lace to anyone who wants to get away from it all and chill out. I will def come again.

Walk in to the archaeology museum, out for a surfing lesson, around for a guided discovery hike... Or hang out on a hammock listening to the waves and looking out to the ocean... you can do all this in Chirije. If you're looking for a bustling, shopping kind of experience, this place wouldn't be for you; it is delightfully isolated and only accessible during high tide. Beautiful gardens are the perfect setting for a magical firefly display every day after sunset. Friendly staff will attend to your every need, and share tales of UFO sightings in this extraterrestrial hotspot. Meals were very good, fresh fruit juices were served, and coffee and tea were good as well (no adult beverages available at the time we stayed). The place is off the grid and runs on generator power during evening hours (be aware that the generator is shutdown between sleeping hours and when it gets dark the next day, so plan your outlet usage for charging camera batteries in advance).

Chirije is a well kept secret with thatched roof huts and colorful bungalows right on a beautiful stretch of beach. Staying here is like having your own private hideaway. The amount of untapped artifacts on this land is amazing.

This place was a magical ending to a wonderful trip to Ecuador. Great room, location and service. Can't wait to go back there. We didn't want to leave

The service is absolutely unbeatable. Patricio the owner makes sure you are treated like a member of the family. Anything you need...they will make it happen and the food was fabulous and fresh cooked to order and huge. Chirije is right on the beach with waves crashing beneath your room, a very special find. The room was a perfect combination eco lodge and luxury. Comfortable bed, modern bathroom. wonderful deck with hammocks to laze away the day. The beach is breathtakingly beautiful...long, wide and empty for miles. The water was warm and calm and we found some amazing sea shells! If you're traveling to Ecuador's coast...don't miss the chance to stay at this special place.
