Agriturismo La Pulledraia del Podere Montegrappa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 9, 2011

This is a good value and well located Agroturismo. Rooms were simple, clean and functional (our room was in the newer part of the buildings).

We took the breakfast+dinner option and meals were tasty and made with good ingredients.
We tried to communicate in basic Italian but felt that the hosts made basically no attempt to communicate with us or make sure we felt welcome (ie explain the area, provide ideas for trips). Part of the agroturismo experience would be to interact a little with the hosts to learn more about the area, animals, food etc and this did not take place. There are many agroturismos in the area and so competition must be fierce.
We also noted that some of the animals (specifically rabbits, not being kept as pets) were in cages that seemed far too small for them. This should not happen at a place that should provide an opportunity to connect with nature.

I chose La Pulledraia because it seemed to offer a true agriturismo experience--family cooking, a working farm, and a lack of touristy glitz. The rooms are very comfortable and quiet--one day la signora asked if I'd heard noise outside in the early morning from some farm equipment, but after having been in noisy Rome for 5 days it was as still as peaceful as heaven to me. The food is delicious and hearty--I especially loved the fried fiori di zucca, pasta with butter and sage, and the tasca piena--a type of veal meatloaf that is typical of the Maremma region. I had to buy a bottle of the homemade nocino liqueur to take home--it was like Tuscany in a glass. As a solo traveler I appreciated the opportunity to socialize with other guests at dinner and found everyone very friendly. La signora and il signore were very kind and pleasant and even gave me a bike to use around one day. If you just want to hang outside around the agriturismo and pet the farm cats, that's OK too. As the website states, if you are expecting a hotel experience you will be disappointed--but for those looking for a quiet way to enjoy the true Tuscany, this is it.

We have stayed at the Pulledraia on several occasions over the past years, whilst conducting work in the Parco Regionale della Maremma, most recently in March/April 2010. The fact that we have returned to this facility on every occasion speaks volumes about the quality of service provided. The agriturismo is in a prime location close to the park, and the rooms themselves are nicely decorated and very comfortable. Signor Bruno and Signora Luciana truly make the place a home away from home, as do the rest of the family. The fact that the agriturismo is also a working farm, and that much food is grown on site, makes it all the more special. The cooking and wines are indeed simply divine. The general ambience and the surrounding landscapes are an added bonus, making it very easy to unwind. We recommend this facility very very highly....
