“beautiful, charming hotel and fantastic food”
Reviewed September 26, 2011

I would return again in a heartbeat. We booked a 2 night stay at the lodge recently and enjoyed every minute. At first glance, the courtyard which houses the bedrooms didn't look brilliant but our room and bathroom are really tastefully decorated, spacious and clean. The only complaint is the tiny telly! It was lost on the wall at a mere 10 or 14 inches. But that's just a small quibble in an otherwise brilliant stay.
The special offer of 2 nights B&B with dinner on one night is really excellent value. We got a gorgeous 3 course meal for that and a glass of wine each. We had dinner in the bar on the first night as options to eat around Cong are limited. Our food was fantastic with beautiful view which added to our experience. There's a lovely atmosphere around the hotel and I really commend whoever designed the interiors in the hotel, it's full of beautiful funky chandeliers , furniture and warm cosy colours that really accentuate the many character features of the house. We're told that the house housed ashford castle's hotel managers and their families through the years so it's nice that the house was so lived in all along before it became a hotel. Each staff member was extremely pleasant and professional. Breakfast was to die for, buttery potato cakes and some of the best white pudding we ever tasted. think I'm fussy enough about food and quality and there was nothing I could fault, this hotel serves really excellent food. If you're looking for a relaxing time in a beautiful place, this is it. I would't entirely recommend Cong itself as there wasn't much in the village itself but the hotel more than makes up for that. Thanks for a wonderful time. We'll be back.

Overall the hotel was lovely, the bedroom was comfortable with big bed and bathroom.
The restaurant was well laid out for dinner but alternative layout for breakfast was very tight.
It's called the Salt restaurant and our evening meal lived up to the name. Both dishes (of beef and fish) were very salty, even more so that other restaurants we've been to.
Breakfast was very average for 4 * hotel standard.
The grounds of the castle of course as amazingly well kept and beautiful. You have free access to the grounds on your stay in the lodge.

We got married in this hotel in September 2010, we have just been back for our anniversary and were not disappointed! The staff are extremely friendly, food excellent and there is a lovely atmosphere in the hotel as it is small and intimate.

Spent 3 nights at the Lodge at Ashford Castle in early July. Everything was fantastic - room, food, service. Beautiful location with plenty to do. Highly recommend it.

We had a lake view room with delightful views of the lough. The room is huge but the bathroom surprisingly small with a huge copper bath in the main room (if you like that sort of thing).

We ate in the bar on both nights and the food was of a good standard. The staff are really nice and friendly too. You can walk to Ashford Castle from the lodge which has wonderful forest and lake walks and its only 15 minute walk into Cong.

We stayed here in January 2011, just at the end of the Christmas holidays. The staff were wonderful. We stayed in a duplex suite, which we didn't ask for but were happy to get! It consisted of a sitting room downstairs and a lovely bedroom upstairs. The bathroom didn't have a bath, but it was still fabulous;massive shower, lovely toiletries and dressing gowns. I've read other reviews where people were unhappy that there was no bath, but we had no complaints! Widescreen TV with DVD player mounted on wall. We loved the place. The only let down was the restaurant!(Bearing in mind this was Jan 2011, things may have changed since then). It was disappointing. Very, very quiet (a bit of background music wouldn't hurt!)...a fireplace with no fire (it was a very cold January night, a fire would have been welcome) and absolutely no atmosphere. It was like a graveyard!...all this would have been acceptable (maybe!)if the food was good...it wasn't. We ordered medium steaks which arrived very, very well done., so after some deliberation we returned them....only to get over-done steaks delivered back to us 20minutes later. I've never stayed in a hotel where I had such a conflict of opinion...loved the accommodation, staff were so nice, but the food was not good. Again, this was 8 months ago and I believe it's under new ownership etc so things may have improved. I would go back...but I would eat elsewhere. The staff were genuinely lovely and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a duplex suite!Friends have ended up staying in much smaller rooms for the same cost.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. It is right at the edge of Ashford Castle grounds so it is a perfect place to stay if you can't afford the castle but want the beauty of the area. We ate in the castle one night and I would highly recommend it.
Initially, I had my reservations about the hotel because of some defects in my room. I was in a duplex suite which has no bath, only a double shower. If you like a bath, ensure you request it because only a limited number of rooms have one. The sitting room had a big stain on the carpet and there was a hole in the wall. The table outside was also rusting. These things should simply not happen in a 4 star hotel.
However, the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food was excellent. The breakfast was buffet style, a thing I usually dislike but the quality of the ingrediants made up for this. The dinner I had was also excellent.
