I am not sure what site the earlier reviews are talking about...

We arrived at this site with a motorhome late in the season, and should be thankful that this site was at least open – we have found most camping sites close in late/end September which is a pain in itself.

When I say they where open, that does not mean we were actualy served by anyone. The site seems to co-exist with the B&B across the road. Anyway, no-one was in the office, but the sign said set-up and they would be back at 5:45pm. Nothing unusual about that. We set up alongside 4 others on a hard surface overlooking the neighbouring cemetry. All ok so far.

After 5 return visits to the office during the course of the evening, there was still no appearance of the owners/managers. This was a pain, as you needed to have a euro coin to run the showers, and the two of us only had one. So the wife got to have a shower.

This is where things started to turn. The shower/toilet facilities are housed in the hostel they also run on-site, and they truly are of backbacker/hostel standard. Only shower curtains seperate you from the general toilet, washing area – so there is no privacy and no security – as evidenced by a man walking in on my wife as he thought it was the men's toilet – the signage is not easy to read in the dim lighting.

So you have to insert a coin in a machine that is outside the bathroom itself – not just your cubicle. Then it takes 2 of the 6 minutes for warm/hot water to appear, through one of those shower heads that spits water everywhere but where you want it. Apparently water saving. Groan.

The site claims to have wifi – over 80% of the the site. We could only pick it up in close proximity to the washrooms. Even though we were parked as close as possible, we could only just see it but not sign on. Which is a pain as the TV signal in absymal, and mobile coverage also poor in the area.

There was no playing of the movie “the Quiet Man” the site is apparently famous for, as far as we could tell without there being anyone around. That did not worry us, just mentioning it in case real fans are hoping this happens. The only other disconcerting thing at that point was the cost to do the laundry – 6 euros to wash, and 6 euros to use the dryer. We have visited over 60 camp sites in the last 4 months throughout Europe, the UK and Ireland, and can confidently say that this is by far the most expensive pricing for washing we have seen anywhere.

So the next morning we went to pay. You have to go and seek out the managers, who stay snuggled up in the B&B down the lane and across the road. The man then wanted 25 euro for 2 adults in a motorhome with electric. This is in the low season, and with having to pay everytime you want hot water. What a ripoff.

Typically, they just wanted cash, and didn't give a receipt. I doubt the taxman ever got his cut on that transaction.

Avoid this site if at all possible.

Room Tip: Don't go here

Camp site was very clean and very well looked after it is spread out over three levels. It was a great place to stay and visit Cong which is a lovely place and lots to see and lots of places to eat out which was not expensive. The weather was not great but we still had a great time and it is well worth a visit. I shall return again

We had a large group and made avail of both the Bed and Breakfast and the Campsite, none dissapointed. The owners are friendly and lovely and made us feel so welcome! The village of Cong is beautiful and Quaint and has some lovely restaurants and pubs, and the facilities on the campsite are second to none. Thanks so much and I really recommend that you stay here, its one of the nicest places I have ever stayed in. Its right beside Ashford Castle and the walks are amazing. STAY HERE! You will not regret it!

When we got there - It was raining heavly but this cleared up and gave us time to put up our tent. The campsite itself was quite small and there was not enough car parking spaces for all the tents and caravans that were there, but we still managed to park the car for the night.
The facilities were excellent. There are many outdoor barbeques so only need to bring or buy charcoal. There is a large kitchen to cook in if you don't want to bother breaking the camping stove out. It is free to use the cooking facilities within the complex (gas and utensils/pots etc) and there is a constant supply of hot boiling water (for tea and coffee) and also hot water for washing up. The toilets were clean and always stocked with toilet roll and soap.
Basically next door to the campsite is Ashford Castle (Where Paul McCartney married that heather character) - a beautiful place to see. We had a long chat with the security Guard who gave us alot of info on the Castle and was a really nice guy.
Cong itself was a bit of a disappointment. There is not much there and we basically seen everything there was to see in an hour. It is however a good base to go travelling around connemara. It was a disappointment to find out that the 'Quiet Man' film was not actually filmed here, and everything bears the name.
Still - a good place to come and visit but I don't think I could stay here for more than 2 days.
Overall - Great camsite, Great Location.
