We stayed at the lodge, as i think everyone does, as part of the LuangSay cruise between Luang Prabang to Houey Xai.

We arrived at the lodge at about 5.30pm after a long day cruising up the Mekong. Immediately the lodge, perched on the riverbank maybe 100m back from the water, and 20m above it looked inviting. We were definitely glad there were porters there to lug our back packs up to the lodge for us though!

Accomodation is in bungalows. They are nicely decorated, and there is a good amount of distance between each one. The beds are really big, and had good mossie nets provided. The bathroom was spacious and there was a very welcome hot shower.

A buffet dinner was included in the price, and was pretty good, although thanks to an unwelcome stomach complaint from LP, I wasn't able to enjoy it fully.

The lodge itself is a good way out of Pakbeng (probably a mile or so). When we booked the trip, the literature said it would be possible to visit the morning markets in Pakbeng before setting off again. But, given the distance and the fact that the boat left at 7am, there was barely time for breakfast, let alone shopping. Breakfast was a fairly standard affair with the usual selection of bread and eggs, and the usual super strength Lao coffee, which was very useful!

One tip - bear in mind that during the "winter" months, travelling up along the river in the early morning can be a pretty chuilly experience - I needed both my jumper and the blanket provided. It was nearly 10am before the sun started to burn through the cloud!

Would definitely recommend the cruise and the lodge, both were really nice. It is obviously much more pricey than the slow boat option (and don't even consider the speedboats - unless you want to risk your life and, at best, have the noisiest most uncomfortable 5 hrs of your life). The accomodation was good, the food pretty good too, and you really felt like you were in the middle of nowhere!

LuangSay Lodge is a beautiful place with unique charm. It is not luxury, actually the bungalows are fairly simple and basic, but nice and spacious, with a beautiful view over the Mekong river. Overall they give a great feeling of harmony, peace and quiet. The walls are made of wood / straw and there are no glass windows, so we could hear the huge noise from the cicadas in the evening, but it was no problem. The staff is very nice and obliging and deserve congratulations. The restaurant serves simple though very tasty food, which was one of our best meals in Laos. Ingedients come from the lodge's vegetable garden and the local growers, as the lodge is careful about sustainability and eco-tourism.
Because the Luangsay cruise (package cruise + lodge) was full when wanted to do it, we travelled another day and chartered our own boat down the Mekong (the Luangsay cruise departs every 2-3 days) and booked our accomodation separately. The advantage was that we were the only guests staying there. Being a family of 5 (with 3 kids) we had two bungalows. The kids loved it too, we only stayed one night and would have loved to stay longer.

We stayed at this lodge because it is a staging post on the Mekong halfway between the Thai border and Luang Prabang. The lodge offers basic accomodation in wooden huts built into the side of the hillside and connected with wooden walkways. There are quite a few steps up to the lodge from the river bank, but once in the lodge everything is on the level.
The accomodation is simple but perfectly adequate. An en-suite lavatory and shower came as a pleasant surprise. The basin has cold water with the shower having hot water heated by means of a gas heater which took me back to student days. The huts are either semi or detached, but since they have shutters as opposed to glazed windows, you can overhear your neighbours` conversations.
The food served in the restaurant was simple, tasty and served by obliging staff. We also enjoyed, believe it or not, a bottle of good, white wine at a most reasonable price.
We stayed here in Feb. when the early mornings and evenings were quite cold so be prepared to wrap up in a comfortable fleece. Also get up at dawn in order to see the Mekong in a magical light before venturing out of the lodge for a walk before breakfast. Don`t forget a torch as the lights go off at night.
