“Basic Hotel with Great View”
Reviewed August 27, 2010

We stopped here for one night going down the river to Luang Prabang. The rooms were basic, no a/c, just a fan on the table between the beds. The door was a bit sticky and i had some problems with the lock. The staff were very welcoming and did their best to help. The best part about the hotel is the balcony area outside the rooms and sitting out there as the sun goes down watching the river traffic on the Mekong below. In flood season apparently the river comes right up to the hotel. Breakfast was basic but nice.

Like most we stayed here while traveling on the boat down the Mekong. For US$10 we got a fan (worked all night), clean enough bathroom and a comfortable bed. From our stay nothing stood out, but we didn't experience any problems.

The only selling point for this place is its proximity to the pier. From the moment the slow boat arrived, there was no electricity, even when the rest of the town’s generators were functioning and on. The room itself seemed alright at first but in the daylight the next morning, it was actually fairly dirty. Also, with absolutely no light, it was next to impossible to use the bathroom as there was no place to put a candle or flashlight. The place is cheap and ok for a night as you probably won’t find a much better place in town but if you can avoid it, don't take the slow boat at all!

As with other reviews we stayed here, in Pak Beng, on our night between traveling on the slow boat up to Luang Prabang.

Lonely Planet recommended Villa Salika back in 2007, so not having any accommodation booked we headed ther. We were allowed to view the rooms before paying. They were spacious with 2 single beds, appeared clean and were on the main street near the docked boats.

When we went to bed that night I noticed bed bugs on my pillow so that went on the floor. We slept in our silk sleeping bag liners but that did not prevent me from having dreams that things were crawling on me in the night. When I woke I was riddled with bites.

I tried to take a shower in the bathroom but the water didn't come out of the shower head. It sprayed in all directions where the hose meets the shower head. In the end it was easier to use the tap nearer the floor to wash myself.

We were charged 200 Baht which seems to be the norm round here, but obviously too much for an infested room.

If you decide to stay check the pillows and bedding thoroughly before you pay any money.

i stayed there one night, and for that price there is realy not much to complain. first the friendly owner mr. somphomh wanted charge 500bath each room, but i was guiding a groupe, so he gave me a discount.
the rooms are ok, clean and not so small. and the singleroom have a great view over the mekong. the is no electric power in the whole village after 10.30 p.m., so bring candle or torch with u for the nighttime.
the location is only 200m walk from the boat pier, the first guesthouse on the right site, u can t miss. compare to other guesthouses for this price, this is a good value. i will stay there again with next groupe. some people from me had breakfast there, and told me that it wasn t special.

We were put in this property as part of a package of a two day river trip between Houei Xay, Laos (across the river from Chiang Khong, Thailand) and Luang Prabang.

The organizer's "first choice" of guesthouse was not available, so they put us here.

Perhaps the main problem we had was it was very hot and humid, but electricity ran only between 6:30 and 10:30. There was no a/c in the room and of course the electric fan stopped with the electricity. Someone told us later that all the places in Pakbeng stop their electricity around this time, but I don't know if that is true.

Futhermore, the bathroom only had a cold water shower (with no curtain, so water shoots everywhere). Given that there is no mains electricity, I would have thought that there would be a skylight, battery operated light, candles, or something to light the bathroom, but instead it was a dark cave (bring your own flashlight/torch!)

Breakfast turned out to be lousy - barely edible for most of our group and served incredibly slowly although we seemed to be the only ones there.

Others on our boat stayed at another place (sorry don't have the name!) and at least got a good breakfast.

  • Liked — Can't thing of anything!
  • Disliked — Couldn't get any sleep because it was so hot. Bathroom a dark cave (no light)
