We've just returned from a lovely week at the Platanista Hotel in Kos, this is a very good standard hotel with a warm friendly atmosphere, our room was a good size facing the hillside so was a very quiet which is what we requested, the room was cleaned daily and was perfect. The food was probably the best we have had in a hotel, plenty of choice, well cooked and presented. The location was excellent being in a quiet area but within easy reach of Kos town about 20 mins walk and regular buses to get back every 15 mins or 30 mins later at night. We would definitely recommend this hotel and will definitely return. A couple of slight negatives would be the pool was quite cold and the drinks were a bit expensive, I'm sure if the drinks were similar prices to the local Tavernas more guests would stay for the evening entertainment but in some cases they were double the price but this means people go out for a drink

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room as some can be a bit noisy overlooking the bar area until quite late

Lovely hotel.....not too large and actually very good first impression even if it was very late at night due to our flight times. The staff were also friendly and very helpful. The food was always well presented and delicious especially breakfast. The pool areas were comfortable and activities organised for the sporty teenagers. The rooms a little dated but clean and comfortable....overall a super hotel.

The hotel is 50m away from the beach. Some rooms will have limited sea views and the sea can be seen from the terrace of the main bar. The beach is fine, the purpose laid sand covers the stones very well and the walkway to the sea useful. Not great for snorkelling but a quiet spot to swim and sunbathe. Many Kos beaches are packed so this one was a perfect spot.

The hotel buildings are constructed around two good sized swimming pools. The main one is 25m long and around 2m deep so it's ideal for swimming and games. The second pool is shallower and has a swim up bar. There is plenty of space for sunbathing around both pool areas. Apart from the pool bar there's a snack bar available during the day, we ate there a couple of times - quality fine with good sized portions. There's a third outside bar area which opens in the evenings, this overlooks the pool, dining area and animation stage.

Many rooms overlook the main pool. Be aware that in the evening you will always fully experience the evening animation show and the loud noise may not be to everyone's taste. Our room was located in the '5' block at the rear facing towards the mountain. This was a family room and matched our request for a quiet location. Our room was comfortable with a large balcony. There is a mini bar and we used this to store our own drinks, conveniently identical to those provided at the hotel but purchased by us at a much cheaper price!

Our family room had a large divide between the parents and kids beds which afforded some privacy. Not all rooms have this and we requested it in advance. The room's TV picked up many channels but the only English ones were BBC news and SKY news, not that we spent much time watching television! The bathroom had a shower over the bath. Our room was kept immaculately clean by the hardworking maids.

The hotel itself is similarly cleaned to a high standard and the grounds maintained extremely well. At the end of each day someone tidies up the sun loungers etc and places them back in their original locations for the following day. The same happens on the beach.

The quality of the food is outstanding. Breakfast offers a variety of hot and cold produce. Tinned and fresh fruit is available as are freshly made waffles and pancakes. They seem cater for the varied tastes of their Northern European clientele so expect to see cold meats, cheeses and British favourites such as bacon, beans, fried eggs etc plus of course cereals and bread. Inexplicably the juice they serve is awful, not fresh simply diluted squash. This was disappointing.

The evening meal offers an almost bewildering selection of choices. Two soups, multiple salad options, pasta, fish, various vegetable dishes, poultry and usually two red meat dishes. This changes each day and rarely did I see anything twice. There is also a daily special cooked in public view - roast turkey, fajitas, mixed grill, hog roast are some of the ones I remember. My favourite was the leg of lamb and they do provide ample Greek fare too. Deserts are aplenty, fruit, cakes, ice cream etc. You will not go hungry as there is something for everyone of any age.

Unfortunately they do not provide any water for your evening meal and thus you have no choice but to buy a drink and the general cost of drinks was a drawback. €2.20 for bottled water, €2.70 for a glass of juice - this was a rip off because they merely poured this from a carton. Spirits are similarly expensive starting at around €5 before you add in your mixer. So, if you're there with a family you'll spend a lot of cash on drinks. To be fair to the hotel we found the cost of drinks in Kos to be generally expensive. Outside the hotel water is unreasonably priced but soft drinks and alcohol are at least comparable if not more expensive than the UK.

Animation. Well this is for some and not others! Six days a week they lay on yoga, crazy golf, aquarobics, beach volleyball, table tennis, darts, water polo and football. This was quite repetitive with little imagination, for example the aquarobics was the same routine with the same music each day apart from the last two days when one of the lads ran this - it looked like he was making it up as he went.

The evening entertainment was a hit but generally miss affair. Proceedings start with a kids mini disco at 9pm. This had the same music and dances each night. If you dine outside at this time your digestion may be effected by the birdie-song each night. I found the mini disco irritating, often there would be only 6 or so kids there yet the whole site had to endure this spectacle and the cringing music. (Good time to leave and visit a local taverna, as we did.) At 9.30pm the main event would start and this lasts for an hour. Most times this was pretty naff, the strongman was the high point. The low point was bingo for which they charged an entrance fee because they offered prizes (bottle of wine). I thought charging a fee was unwarranted given the paltry prizes offered and that they were making money by people buying drinks anyway (the bingo was also organised very badly). Personally we prefer to make our own entertainment but many guests would be there avidly each night, each to their own.

There is a charge for use of the tennis court and sauna/jacuzzi. The gym facilities are vfreee but the kit a little outdated. The wi-fi you also have to pay for or use a local bar.

The staff in the hotel were all excellent and cannot be faulted. They were friendly, polite, attentive and worked hard to treat us well and took an obvious took pride in delivering a high quality service. I hope the owner pays them well. Many of them work from early in the morning to late at night.

Taverna Nestoras is an excellent venue outside the hotel. Friendly staff, good food and a stunning view across the sea to Turkey. I'd also recommend bar Hamro in the evening - the barman is a welcoming and affable character, he gives you complimentary crisps, nuts and lemon cake with your drink. Different.

I'd recommend hiring bikes - great way to really explore Kos town, we went to the Askeplion and the thermal baths which is great exercise on a hot day.

I'd recommend the hotel to anyone and would stay again if I returned to Kos. Yes I have a few criticisms which are honest observations to give you a clear view. However overall this is a great hotel and we have fond memories of our stay.

Well, my review will not be much different from all the others as all I have are words of praise!

Our holiday did not start well though as there was an overbooking the first night which meant we did not get the rooms we had paid for but they made up for it very nicely. We got free beach towels, the use of the bikes for a whole week, free use of the safety deposit boxes and check out whenever we wanted on the day of departure. This is service with the big S and I was well impressed!

The food was delicious and there were different options every evening and plenty of everything (they replenish regularly). In the morning, they make pancakes outside which is super for kids (and adults as well :-).

The rooms are kept spotless and are quite spacious. They all have a terrace which has a table and two chairs. Perfect for sitting out at night. Airco works very well. There are two swimming pools and lots of beach chairs. The only thing is, people lay out their towels very early in the morning and then sometimes don't turn up until late afternoon. So be warned during high season! Get up and put your towels on the chairs! I don't think this will be an issue outside of July and August though.

Entertainment is quite good (though very loud sometimes so we used to sit in the back). However, we very often just went to Kos town to wander around and have a drink.

The hotel is located about 2,5 kms from Kos town. You can take the bus or the bike. I would recommend hiring a bike for the whole time anyway. It's wonderful! Everyone rides a bike in Kos and it takes only about 10 min to get to the center. It also feels very safe, even when you return at midnight. We took the bike most mornings to go to a beach we loved. There is also a beach opposite the hotel but we didn't find that very appealing. We always went to Theodorou beach which is about 5 min on the bike. It's lovely and the people are very friendly. I think they're Dutch. Lunches are wonderful there! You can also visit in the evening as they have a cool bar.

Kos town is really nice with its small narrow streets.. lots of shopping options. Very nice places to have lunch. On the way there, you will see a beach restaurant (for the romantics a must). It's on the sand, has white tables with red chequered table cloths and small candles. Beautiful!

What else can I say that has not been said? I would't want to stay anywhere else now that I have been to the Platanista. The only negative thing I could find, it that smoking is allowed in the rooms but this is a pet peeve of mine and should not keep you from booking the hotel. Also, July and August are the typical vacation months for people with kids which makes for a lot of noise so if you don't have kids, go outside of these months (but then you all know this already :-). The hotel btw caters very well for families with kids.

Kos itself is beautiful and the people are very friendly everywhere. We loved it!

Room Tip: There are no real great seaviews so no need to take this into account. Rooms looking out on the pool...

I stayed at this hotel at the beginning of august and had a wonderful time. The hotel is very impressive with its large entrance and lovely pool area. Both pools were a good size and very clean with plenty of sunbeds around them. There were, however, some guests that got up very early to reserve sunbeds with their towels and not appear for many hours later to use them. We found this to be very selfish behavior. It was not too much of a problem if you got to the pool area by about 11 am luckily. The hotels beach was always quieter and we enjoyed going there in the afternoons. There are lovely views of turkey and the passing ships from the beach, the only downside is having to pay for the sunbeds. I would recommend taking some shoes to wear in the sea as the beaches in Kos all appear to be quite rocky or stoney.

The staff were very helpful at the reception area.We paid 3.50 euros each for beach towels for a week which was very helpful as we got a fresh towel everyday from reception. The staff at reception were also very helpful in helping us arrange to rent a car for the day and for it to delivered to hotel. This was a great way to see more of Kos as we found the buses to be unpredictable and very busy. It was very useful to drive to Paradise beach as this is difficult to get to by bus and was much more expensive to book it as a pre organized trip.

The food at both breakfast and dinner was varied and tasty. Greek yoghurt, fresh fruit, cooked breakfast, cakes and pastries were some of the breakfast options. Not forgetting pancakes and waffles covered in nutella! There was plenty of choice for dinner as well including rice dishes, vegetable dishes, pasta, curry, stir fry and plenty of different meats and fish.

Kos town is lovely, we visited lots of nice tavernas and enjoyed using the free wifi. Everyone is very friendly and there is plenty of little shops and a lovely indoor market. Overall I really enjoyed my stay and would love to visit again!

We traveled here at the end of July as a family of four and had a great holiday. We had two rooms next door to each other and both were spacious and very clean. The air conditioning was a great bonus as it was so hot. To turn on the air conditioning and electricity you had to put your card key into a slot near the door but this was never a problem. The food was excellent with plenty of choice for everyone in our party including a vegetarian. Breakfast was excellent with so many tasty choices it was difficult to chose each day but a good opportunity to try different foods including Greek specialties. Dinner was also excellent with lots of choice each day and some of our favorites included leek pie, veal, fajitas, moussaka, sea food and so many more. Desserts were also excellent with many cakes, mousses, ice creams and fruits.

The pool area was good and the pools very well maintained, you could see the maintenance being carried out each evening and early in the mornings. The gardens were also worked on constantly and were very pretty. We also spend time on the hotel beach as we loved swimming in the clear sea with the views of turkey. We visited the local taverna a few times especially to use the wi-fi to catch up with news from home.

We visited Kos town a couple of times and loved pottering around the little shops and stopping for a cooling drink in the cafes. We also visited the ruins of the theatre and went on the little train to the Askelpion.

Another excellent trip was on a boat to three islands. We went on the Katerina boat as recommended on Trip Advisor and it was excellent. The lunchtime food was very good according to my family (I did not have any as I was sea-sick!).

Room Tip: If you need a quieter room ask to be away from the entertainment area.
