“Lovely holiday enjoyed by the whole family”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

We have just returned from this hotel, 6 were in our party age ranges from 30 to sprightly 81's, - a family holiday. First point to note, there are lots of marble steps in this hotel, when entering the hotel, going down to breakfast/dinner, down from the reception area to get to the pool and even more steps to get down to the pools themselves. Our two 80 year olds managed, just. Everywhere is immaculately clean. The maids work very, very hard. Sheets and towels changed every single day and rooms cleaned. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms which I found odd and could have done with. There is a mini bar full off miniatures, coke, water, Fanta, nuts etc. If you buy bottled water alas there is nowhere to keep it cool as you get a telling off from reception if you put it in the mini bar as it is checked and restocked every day. Ladies, not many coat hangers. We had 9 between us in our room so everything was doubled up or laid over the back of the chairs etc. Gentlemen, you MUST wear long trousers to dinner. Alcoholic drinks are quite pricey and so is the coke and water. The restaurant staff are very attentive and excellent service. Food is good and there is a special every night. Waffles and Crepes for breakfast, the usual English. Bread and rolls are lovely every day. Plenty of salad choices. Roast lamb, roast pork, hog roast, turkey, beef, fresh salmon, vegetables are usually green beans, peas, sprouts, cauliflower. Could do with being a little hotter but hey ho, lots going on. Usual ice creams and cake selections even some Gluten free! Lots of Germans, more than Brits. The doors in Germany must be made from cast iron because they really do hammer on them! Beds by the pool should not be reserved by the placing of towels but as you go to breakfast towels are laid on all the empty sun beds. If you don't get to the pool in good time all the beds are gone. There are two pools both fresh water and a small Jacuzzi in the smaller pool by the swim up cocktail bar. The staff here work very hard, they serve at breakfast, then go on to either a snack bar or cocktail bar, they then appear at dinner. We were walking back to the hotel after 11 p.m and the waiter from breakfast 7.30a.m. onwards was just leaving! The evening entertainment starts with a kiddies disco and we went out so not sure what was going on thereafter. They do come round and ask if you want to join in water polo, aerobics, mini golf etc - a polite no thank you, not today and they wish you a good day and move on. There are a couple of tavernas at the end of the drive, Michael's to your left as you leave the hotel drive is a nice spot. He is ever smiling and brings crisps, nuts and mama's homemade cake. Nice family. Bikes, scooters, cars etc can be hired from the driveway to the hotel. There are bus stops on the end of the driveway into Kos town but they are packed by the time they get to Platanista. Not a long journey though. Good old walk into Kos town along the sea front, would take about 40-45 minutes. Mythos is about Euros 4. Cocktails about Euros 5. In Kos town you can get Mythos for about Euros 3 on the sea front. They will charge you Euros 49 if you want to book your room on the last day after 12 noon but this is only from 12 noon to 6p.m. Ask to use the hotel complimentary showers if your flight is a late one, pick up a towel from Reception. Showers are on lower ground. On the whole we all enjoyed our stay here and would we return again? Yes and would I recommend this hotel to family and friends, yes, most definitely. My mother had her 81st birthday, we never mentioned it and the staff arrived at dinner with a lovely chilled bottle of champagne and they made a fuss of her, which was lovely. They make a note from your reservation of a birthday, they did the same for a few other guests as well.

Room Tip: All the rooms appear to be the same. All with air con.

Me and my boyfriend stayed at this hotel for the first time for a week on the 6th of July.
We arrived to the hotel and was shown to our room, room is very nice, double bed, balcony looking over the pool and could see the sea from our room, was very impressed. Breakfast is lovely, lots to choose from, pool area is nice, would recommend the second pool as the first pool there's lots of activies going on and me liking peace and quiet the second pool was nice and relaxed. Very nice pool bar yet the drinks I thought were far to expensive, a diet coke dearer than a beer, and I found sometimes they were changing there prices a little from day to day.
READ: please take trousers when you go to this hotel ( men) me and my boyfriend were informed at our welcome meeting that he had to wear trousers to dinner, now we wasn't informed on this by our travel agents so being like any normal person we didn't bother packing trousers due to the fact it would be hot on a night and wouldn't exactly be the comfiest. I approached a certain staff member who works behind reception, young man, black spikey hair, I told him we wasn't informed about this but we would go and look in kos town tomorrow for some so would it be ok to eat tonight, his reply was no, we were refused to eat which we had PAID for half board. Me and my boyfriend were very angry and disgussed with our rep, he soon sorted it for us and was then 'allowed' to eat that night. We chose not to for princible and the next day we bought some trousers but making it aware to the staff we wasn't happy the way we were treated. I would go back and visit , hopefully they would have got rid of their dated rule about long trousers at dinner, instead change it to smart dress code... I didn't understand why you weren't allowed to wear knee length shorts yet you were allowed to wear track suit bottoms and sleeveless tops? That really did baffle me. Other than that mishap the staff were helpful and the maid always kept our room lovely and clean. Kos is a beautiful place. Recommend the 3 island boat trip on a Thursday.
Chloe and Ashley.

To start with I want to say the best part of this hotel are the wonderful friendly bar / restaurant and snack bar staff , they are simply the best . Saddened me to see how over worked they are . The hotel is clean ... Plenty of sunbeds unless you arrived midday ...then it is a bit hard to find them .the food for me wasn't the best that I have had over the years at the platanista but was still a good choice of mains . My husband and I thought the deluxe room we had paid almost 400 pounds more for wasn't worth the money ... No free wi fi ... No tea making facilities not even a pen ... The decor was very bland ikea style furnishings . My final comment the owners of this hotel are around most of the time and it would be nice if they acted like they where pleased to have paying customers in the hotel also did annoy me to see the owners young children treat the staff like servants . Once again I want to thank the wonderful staff too many to name but especially spartak and Maria

Room Tip: Don't pay for the deluxe room not worth the money go for the VIP rooms which we have stayed in p...

We stayed at Hotel Platanista during mid June- early July. A beautiful hotel, very clean and most of staff very friendly. The hotel room was very spacious, and although we were slightly dubious at staying on the ground floor, it was very peaceful and the terrace overlooked gorgeous and very well kept gardens. Rooms are air conditioned. We were disappointed that there was no safety deposit box in the room- if you want to leave valuables they need to stay behind reception, felt this strange in a modern hotel in 2013! We felt the same about the fact there was no free wifi, prices quite steep if you want to pay for an hour. We found alot of the bars on the way to and in Kos town offer free wifi if you require it.
Food was lovely, great variety at breakfast, a few days we had lunch at the pool bar- food great as is the service. Evening meal again plently of choice and something for everyone, and we loved the fact there was a special main each night, with Sous Chef serving, one night there was a hog roast, another night greek souvlaki, spicy fajitas, roast lamb etc. Lots of traditional Greek dishes to try and enjoy.
The entertainment is like marmite I think. We were not huge fans, but that isnt to say the entertainment team work really really hard. We felt it rather annoying that they come and no less than 'pester' you around the pool about joining in organised activities during the day- we found ourselves justifying why we just wanted to relax on our sunbeds quite a few times- and even after this they would keep coming back, we found this a bit much. Evening entertainment consisted of bingo, disco, muscle competition, comedy act the nights we stayed at the hotel.
Feel like we should mention Spartak, the head Barman in the evening, hard working and exteremely attentive, ensuring everyone has what they need and more.
There is not alot in the area of Psalidi other than a few hotels and lovely local tavernas (we reccomend Taverna Akrogaili), we stayed here for the kitesurfing school up the road. However it is a lovely area to stay in if you wish to be away from the crowds but close enough to be accesible to the hussle and bustle of Kos Town.
Overall a lovely, clean and spacious hotel with great staff, in a peaceful but beautiful area only 50km from the sea.

Background
Max 500 guests but average is 400 until children accompany parents (other hotels have 2,500 guests). Accommodation is based around 5 small blocks and the hotel has been open about 16 years.

Rooms are a fair size but not huge which means even with 2 large cases in the room there is still a reasonable amount of space to walk around.

Beds are often 2 singles put together and each bed has its own separately sheet and covers.
Bathrooms are adequate with a bath and a shower over bath with a curtain. There is no walk in shower in the standard rooms (majority) which may be difficult for guests with back problems although bath is low style. Although an upgrade to a premier room in the new block opened in 2012 provides this (apparently).

The hotel is located 45 mins from the airport and is about 3km outside Kos town although there is a frequent and cheap bus service within 50m of the hotel to/from Kos town. Purchase bus tickets at the hotel reception beforehand.

Recommended staff

Stavroula front office manager plus other front office staff including late night receptionist
Marius (Maître D), Chianis, and other restaurant and bar staff.

As this is our 3rd annual visit to this hotel it is great to see the same staff and also that these staff also remember guests from previous years.

Restaurant

Dress code for men is long trousers at dinner although this is not strictly enforced whilst ladies have no such dress code stipulated with the resultant low standards adopted by a few females.
Breakfast and dinner are superb with self-selection of a great choice of food that covers both local and European tastes. The food is constantly being replaced with new food from the kitchen. There is a very wide range of starters, 5+ choices of mains plus a ‘dish of the day’, there is at least a choice of 5 deserts plus a wide choice of fresh fruit.

Facilities

There are 2 large swimming pools – one of which is aimed at families and is the larger of the two whilst the other is predominantly for adults with a swim up bar. Glass bottles and glasses are dispensed which poses a health and safety of broken glass in and around the pool although in the 3 years we have been going this has never happened but is a risk awaiting the inevitable.
There are plenty of sun loungers with a parasol for every 2 sun loungers although late comers have to search to find unused loungers which can be an issue for lunch time hotel arrivals.
There is a modern children’s playground for the younger set and an animation team leads aerobics, volleyball, football, water exercises, crazy golf, boules, etc on a daily basis.
The hotel has a ‘beach’ area about 50m away over the main road that also has sun loungers and parasols that guests and visitors have to pay for whilst the beach is stony! There is a sandbagged path provided out into the sea across the stones and on the sea bed that swimmers use.

Clientele changes end June/early July with many more children and teenagers.

Room Tip: The family block is next to the children's playground

Overall it has been a great experience!.

Meals: lots of (fresh) variation in both dinner and breakfast. Nice restaurant. Pancakes in the morning freshly prepared by the ever laughing chef.
Animation: Maria, Nuno and Christina did a really good job. Lot's of different sports and activities organised all over the day. Well trained and most of all very nice people (also for the kids).
Bar: The hotel is blessed with staff like Spartak, Maria and Alexandra. They really make the difference in hospitality and atmosphere.
Rooms: The hotel has fine, well-cleaned and nicely furnished rooms. These rooms are situated in different buildings on the complex.
Pools: two nice pools of which one has a pool bar
Reception: good service and nice staff

However, if you are looking for an accomodation in a vibrant neighbourhood with a nice beach, you should reconsider if this hotel is the best choice. The hotel is situated at a side-road in a calm environment, with almost no shops or bars in the vicinity. If you like cycling, Kos-stad can be reached within approx. 15 min. A taxi will cost you approx. 8 euro. The beaches in Tigaki are better. If you don't mind, then surely book this hotel! You will have a very nice stay overthere.

Room Tip: If possible, pick a room a the swimmingpool at the second level. beautiful view over the hotel durin...

We really enjoyed our stay here, the room spacious, clean and well designed. The two pools spotless with plenty of sunbeds, only small thing, at such a good class of hotel I would have expected cushions for the sunbeds. There are activities in the day if you wish but it isn't our 'thing' so can't comment. The staff friendly and helpful without being over the top. We had half board and found the breakfasts really good with plenty of variety, the dinners the same with many choices and all food of a high quality. The bars well stocked and with a pleasant 'buzz'. The evening entertainment is good, but again we aren't really into that.
All in all we would return to this hotel, many of the guests we met had been previously. I can't think of any snags.
