We recently returned from our third visit to "paradiso" and once again the fabulous staff did not disappoint! Truly the staff is what makes the Grand so grand!
The hiccups came upon check-in. We arrived quite early so we knew our room would not be ready. Last year we were surprised by a complimentary upgrade to the oceanfront building #70. No such luck this year as this building (which is closest to the Maya) was closed for renovations. Not a problem, as our first stay (when the Grand opened in 2006) was overlooking the Tranquility pool and it was just fine. However, this time around they attempted to give us a room literally around the corner from the Tranquility pool looking at a back driveway and what we called the "jungle" room. Having reserved an oceanview room and this being our third visit, our thought was "how can they give us this room?" Not acceptable! After a walk back to the front desk to voice my concerns and disappointment, Alicia miraculously found a room on the top floor (Room 7281) overlooking the Tranquility pool. The view was much better but the room was sadly showing signs of age; the shampoo/shower gel dispenser was missing and the hairdryer was basically unusable. Turn down service was spotty but a call to guest services rectified this situation. We left a note with our preferences for the room along with tip and all was fine. We always tip the staff upon check-in and at check-out! The pillow menu as always was nice. We did not use room service at all this time around so I cannot comment. Last year we were given a complimentary USA Today newspaper; not this time around. We just grabbed a copy at the morning breakfast buffet.
Being repeat guests, it was so nice that many staff members remembered us and welcomed us back! As Olivia was out on maternity leave, Daniella introduced herself and was fabulous the entire week. Chef Omar made his special dish for my husband again this year which was "shrimp with linguine arrabiata" for dinner at the Italian restaurant. Delish! Other noteworthy staff members: Jorge (the best waiter) Alfredo & Hugo (excellent maitre d's) Star Friends Jenny, Paul and so sorry, cannot remember our third favorite but he greeted us by name every time he saw us! And, of course, Mirna. (see below!)
For most of the day we stayed at the fabulous beach where the ocean boasted a gorgeous shade of turquoise/teal and looked like a sheet of glass! Absolutely crystal clear; the ocean was never so calm and clear in all the years we have been going to this area. During our past visits to the Grand and three visits to Secrets Maroma, we have never witnessed the ocean this calm. Even the staff commented on how surreal it was! The service on the beach was fine; our compliments to the waiter who was still working out of Building #70. As this was still our favorite spot he took great care of us. So sorry I cannot remember his name! Mirna was truly the BEST welcoming us with her smile every afternoon at the Tranquility pool.
So nice to see our friends from last year, Maryann & Allan. We had such a nice time again; hopefully, we'll see each other again. We cannot forget to say hello to Jo & Dottie from New Jersey and Norbert & his girlfriend from Geneva.
Looking forward to our fourth visit! Enjoy The Grand as it truly is "paradiso."
