My husband and I just returned from edr last week and wish we were going back next week. The hotel is beautiful and the service was above and beyond our expectations. The food was great and the service was even better! The worse part was having to go home. No complaints at all! Totally recommend it!

Ok, here how we ended up feeling about the EDR.
The Bad News;
Coke Lite was so bad, I really like my Diet Coke and the Lite stuff was bad, so was the regular Coke. This forced both my wife and myself to drink Mararittas and they were sooooo gooood!
Did lagoon smell the smell bother us? A couple of times but it was not that bad!
The Good News;
Great food, we knew from reading old reviews what to expect for dinner reservations and reserved the first three nights by email and then took care of the others at the resort. Changed our mind one night and a couple of dollars bought a table at the restarant of our choice.
Loved the burger and dogs at the pool it was a nice change from the great meals. Felt more like home.
The Advice;
Shop Playa not Cancun, better prices and selection on 5th Street. Some of the prices at the resort were better than those found in the towns. Pack your Imodium, never know if you might need it for a night. Take time to read the reviews here and visit mapchick for some great packing and airport advice.
Bring a little pen light to help read the menus in some of the resturants that have the mood lighting night. They did bring us a flashlight so that we could read the menu better. This is not a complaint but a suggestion for those with less than 20/20.
Oh, The Questions;
The people that have written questionable reviews have me puzzled. We had a wonderful time, we enjoyed the grounds, the people, both the staff and the other guests. What could cause a person to write some of the stuff I read. I have no idea.

Have a great stay! If you would like to ask any other questions I would be willing to respond.

Just returned from El Dorado and had worst week ever.
Have been to other places like Cuba and Mazatlan and this was the worst...Food made us sick...bugs in food..Bathrooms with urine running on floor...nothing worked....Jaquzzi had ring around tub...When confronted with problems was told if you don't like it go somewhere else.....With one day left told us to leave, so had to pay 60 dollars for cab and 500 dollars for last night in other Hotel. Beach and water only good thing....Never Ever going back..Use at own risk...

To all of you who are think of booking the EDR or who will be going shortly, it has to be the best hotel I have stayed at, and I am well travelled. We were there from 25th Jan - 1st Feb
We stayed in a garden room block 12, which is a perfect location, your near to everything.
I think our room had just been refurbished as it was spotless, the paintwork, the double jucuzzi looked brand new, you get candles and bubbles we had robes, the mini-bar was topped up everyday, it was perfect, I don't think the other rooms (Casitas) are really worth the money, spend it on excursions.
The food.... where do I start amazing, all evening meals are candlelit, and the service was excellent.
My favorite restuarant was the Italian.. we ate in all of them, reservations were simple and easy, and we had breakfast in Cocotal except for one morning.
The grounds of the hotel were beautiful, well kept and very clean.
We spend the whole day at Xel-Ha which is a must.
Went to Cancun on the hotel bus, and we also we to Playa Del Carmen twice by taxi, I preferred Playa.
EDR is a wonderful, romantic experience.... enjoy!!

Most of the recent reviews are more thorough & give you the info. you need. You should have no qualms about booking this resort. It is awesome! I will just add a few items. I would be happy to email any info. you may need in addition.

The food is out of this world! We were there 1/27-2/1 and never had a bad meal. Our travel agent reserved the first 3 nights for us (Cocotal, D'Italia and Kampai) & then we made our last 2 reservations when we got there. (La Isla, followed by Cocotal, because we loved it so much.) We had no trouble with any of those, but the travel agent idea seemed to be the best. We ate the buffet breakfasts at Cocotal & usually had lunch at JoJo's. As for portion size, there are so many courses, you want to be able to try them all, so smaller is good. If you are ever hungrier, just ask for another & they will provide. (My husband did that at Kampai & they were prompt and gracious about it.) Oh, you can always order cappucino at dinner, which for me was the perfect accompaniment to dessert.

We found the staff at the restraunts to be particularly helpful. We tried to to tip well. We loved Wilbur (Cocotal) Brenda (La Isla) & so many others. My husband speaks passable Spanish & they loved that he spoke to them & would try to take moments to come by our table & talk.

We took the tour to Xel-ha & Tulum- very fun and informative. Next time we will spend the day at Xel-ha. Also took shuttle to Cancun for shopping. Wish we had gone to Playa del Carmen, but those exursions were at night & we didn't want to miss any of the fabulous dinners at the El Dorado!

We found the night life a little lacking.(and we are 50!) The band was relatively good & we enjoyed the Karaoke nite, but the rest of the time, the announcers liked the sound of their own voices a little too much & there wasn't enough action to go along with it.

The pools were nice, although they filled up relatively quickly (especially the main pool.) The beach was wonderful up to the water, but after that was fairly rocky.

We had a garden level first floor room (1201) & it was fabulous. Although we were able to tour other rooms (yeah-we took the time share presentation tour!) can't say I would spend the extra $$ for either ocean front or casitas. We were actually closer to the restraunts & main bldg. Enjoyed naps on the hammock on our lanai.

My only other comment is this: if you have never been to the Cancun airport, BEWARE! Make sure you know who & where you are going to pick up your hotel transfer & head for that person.(Ours was outside). SAY "NO" to everyone else. We were accosted by this time share person (looked official with a badge & the same outfit all the other official people wear; white shirt, navy blue pants & everything) that told us he would take us to the funjet area & there we were being told that funjet would show up in 25 minutes & that until that time we could listen to their great offer. I had read enough on the Internet to know what they were doing, but my husband thought it sounded like a great deal. It wasn't & we didn't end up going to their presentation. It turned into a sort of ugly & tense scene. Not the way you want to start a vacation.

But back to the EDR...enjoy and book early cuz we will be going back next year & for a longer period of time!

We just returned from EDR for two weeks where my wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary and both of our birthdays. It was our first big vacation together and we picked the perfect spot. All of the good reviews convinced us to go here, but we couldn't have imagined how ideal this place was for us. Because this was a big vacation for us we paid the extra money and stayed in a casita, and we felt it was worth it. It was away from the main bar and pool which made it nice and quiet. Not having to line up for reservations was a bonus. Some days we didn't phone the concierge until around noon and still manged to get into the restaurant of our choice. We satyed in casita 2611 which was on the second floor, right behind the Papagayos bar, ran by the hardest working bartender in the world, Abel. We had a nice view of the ocean from our balcony, and the outside shower was great. I'll continue this review by listing the nagatives and then the positives. The negatives are very minor things and did not lessen our enjoyment much at all. Negatives...we ran out of hot water twice, both times in early afternoon for about 10 minutes...we experienced about 3 or 4 rather cool nights so bring pants and a good fleece or sweater...no sanck foods are available(chips,crackers,etc.) so bring some if you want them...the drinks at the pool bars and on the beach come in plastic glasses and tend to get warm fast,so bring insulated travel mugs...chair hogs!-we had a group of four not staying in the casitas that would come to our section early everyday and claim four loungers by the pool as well as loungers by the beach and a cabana bed! They took casita towels back to their room every night so that people would think they were from that section, but they weren't fooling anyone...the last negative is that we had a hard time adapting to the food. It may have been because it was our first time in Mexico or maybe it was the fact that we had never experienced gourmet dining before, but we could never really shake the suppertime "queaziness" though we always got through it. Now the positives...the weather-it rained for about 2 minutes right after we got there-everyday after 28 to 30 celcius and mostly sunny...we weren't bothered by sand fleas or mosquitoes like some people were...no crowding-the resort was full while we were there but we never felt crowded. We only waited for our table at dinner once, at the Mexican for about 40 minutes. And after seeing how crowded the beach at Playa was, we really appreciated the room at this place...the food-it really was very good, we just had trouble adjusting to it. The best was the Italian, especially the scallops, the veggie lasagna, and the grouper...The ocean- the water was very warm most days and there was pretty good snorkelling. A little reef just off shore form the casitas beach held schools of small fish on calm days, and large schools of bigger fish can be found beneath the posts at the end of the old pier...And most important of all, the people, the new friends we met from England, Duluth, Brandon, Chile, Atlanta, and that crazy bunch from Michigan. And especially the great people that work at EDR. They are always smiling and friendly and they bust there buts for us tourists. They are constantly scrutinized by their supervisors and they don't make much money, so tip,tip,tip! Be sure to say hola to bartenders, Abel, Osman(call him Donnie), Carlos, Carlos, Pedro, and Rosemberg, beach waiters, Fermin, Hector, and Angel. waiters Felix(Kampai and beach dinner), Armando(Cocotal & Cabana), and especially Enrique(La Isla), hostess Evelyn(La Isla) and our smiling buddy at the swing bar Gerardo! Tell them Senor Hymie and Senora Denise say Hola! Enjoy youself, its paradise!

Hello,
We just returned from EDR and it was fantastic. The staff, food and weather were all amazing. The beach is a little rocky, but there are still plenty of nice spots to sit and relax in the sun. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is we had a very nice relaxing time at a beautiful resort. We'd both go back without hesitation.
